The issues brought up in the presentation and the above comments also apply to other employment. Specifically, hourly employees in customer facing jobs deal with many collateral duties that often increase with little or no notice as well as no increase in pay. Work/life balance seems to have degenerated into a term that companies use to get you onboard, then the conversations depicted here happen on a regular basis. JMHO…

Everytime I worked harder, used my time for work, it really never mattered or got me any further ahead than normal! Most people that are paying your salary, are just looking to get what they can, for less or nothing! I got so tired of making money for other people, at the expense of my exhausted body/mind & my free time, that I could've spent doing things w/ my kids, or making money on the side, for myself! If no one appreciates your hard work in return for raises, added insurance or vacation time, then STOP & do for yourself! Most people are already!

I worked for a large group of gastroenterologists in OKC, with multiple offices across the metroplex. I balanced all data entries between our bank and the offices. I LOVED the job and did it for 12 years. Then, I had a Workers Comp injury with surgery and had to miss some work. When I returned, they made me a CSR, which I hated. They hired a new person who only lasted a few months. Then, our office manager was supposed to do the work. After 6 months (from the day the new hire started) my manager asked if I could catch up the paperwork so annual reports could be given to our CPAs. I did 6 months of work in 1 month. You'd think they'd be grateful but, NO. Instead of giving me my old position back, they hired 3 new people. Each one did 1 aspect of my job because they couldn't find someone to do the entire job.
@kittymarch84553 ай бұрын
This is the whole reason why organizations get bloated. They expand expectations to match the skills of current employees. When those employees leave, they can’t imagine cutting back on expectations, so they end up hiring multiple new people. If they focused on what did they actually need and not squeezing maximum work out of employees, they’d be in much better shape.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but filing in for that higher position for 3 months without being in the final 2 people for the position was guaranteed to get you fired. Because that shows your bosses that you want to grow, but they don't want you to grow for the same reason Laura just demonstrated in this video. And once you start growing, you're either going to be a threat to them, or you're going to leave to get a better job somewhere else. Both of these will get you put on a PIP because they want to be spiteful and make you look bad to any new employers. It was a trap that a lot of people fall into. Hopefully, you'll find a new job immediately or get a bunch of dirt on the pos boss you angered and get them fired on the way out too.

This is why I refuse to take on a salaried position. Every person who is salaried that I know is expected to work minimum 60 hour weeks. And they don’t even get bonuses most of the time; those all go to the upper management at the top. I stick to hourly roles so I’ll make overtime for anything over 40 hours. Consequently, I am never hassled for working 40 hours on the dot. 😁
@yacaattwood24213 ай бұрын
Yes! A former coworker who now works at a different company recently told me that he was made hourly instead of salaried because the new management wanted him to have a better work-life balance (also because the company had been caught in some improprieties regarding salaried workers - many of those people were found to have worked 90+ hour weeks while being paid for 40) His manager approves overtime as necessary and cautions him against working too much overtime, which he’s paid for I worked quite a bit of overtime in my 41 years in Information Technology, being salaried exempt - my DBA position was outsourced in 2020, and I decided in early retirement; 41 years was enough

It really comes down to the manager, as she's shown in other skits. I've been LUCKY, I will absolutely acknowledge that I have been *lucky*, but having been in a salaried role for going on a decade and none of my managers here have ever routinely expected me to exceed 40 hour work weeks. I have been asked a couple times to stay late to finish up a critical task/small project by as much as an hour... but in every one of those cases my manager understood and OFFERED to allow me to take offer early at the end of the week if I wanted to make up for the overage on those days.
