Critical Duty is among one of the most iconic, effective, & commonly used FBI/Secret Service rounds ever made. Not saying this round is the best but if you do your research, for duty & offensive situations it’s one of if not the most effective round for that purpose itself. With that being said I prefer the Critical Duty 135gr +P , Speer Gold Dot 124gr +P, or Federal Premium HST 147gr if we talking 9mm. Those are the best rounds hands down. Stats say it all!

The marketing geniuses over at Hornady certainly met their design goals for LE. I am just wondering how many civilian self defense scenarios there are that involve barriers and don’t land you behind bars 😂. Of the two I like the 45 way better due to the higher energy and larger diameter

Ball ammo for self defense? Why would you want a disadvantage
@cgsimons1187
@cgsimons1187 6 ай бұрын
I've heard about what timrobinson6573 is stating. After the initial shot is fired the attackers will oftentimes run away or take cover and continue their assault from that position. This hints at the value of using a bullet with good stopping power(especially for the first rounds) to take them out of the fight ASAP. Some people get the notion that stopping power is unimportant because they can just fire as many rounds as they have in their magazine. Though if the bad guy can still move after that first shot, he is likely to get off the X. That first shot may be your best opportunity to avoid a long-drawn-out gunfight against someone hiding behind cover.
@mikerobinson8734
@mikerobinson8734 6 ай бұрын
@@HWG-wm8ld How is that a disadvantage? 2 holes are better than 1. Imagine being stabbed with a pencil, now imagine being stabbed by the same pencil from the front of your chest and the back of your chest. Which one do think does more damage? I guarantee you will bleed out much faster with 2 stab wounds over 1. The whole expanding bullets are overrated and under penetrate. 9mm is a very weak caliber as it is. Also to add to that if caliber doesn’t matter ie… 9, .40 .45 than why does it “need” to expand? Shot placement matters and you shouldn’t be shooting at anything or anyone with a bystander behind your target anyway so hollow points are moot. I carry with what I train with. Most people never train with their +p HST hollow points.

This clearly shows the .45 hits with more power so it is more deadly than the 9mm. Funny how when 9mm advocates start justifying the 9 by saying there is less recoil, I have more bullets in my gun and so forth, it does not make up for having less power at impact. It is inconceivable that any adult male can not train to the point where one can place the .45 just as accurately as the 9mm. Do not settle for a less powerful bullet just because you do not want or do not have the time to train because we are talking about a deadly event when your life is at stake so it is important enough to make the time to do so. Keep up the good videos.

I love 45 but the 9mm does beat it in a lot of other ways, mostly in availability I'd say. However, I don't really believe that either one is more deadly than the other. Call me crazy all you want. People have eaten up 45s like they're nothing, people have tanked through 9mm like they're nothing, yet some have succumbed to only a few rounds of .22 or .380. I'd say shot placement is indeed critical for duty (hehe), which truly matters over caliber. If someone is accurate with a .22 or a .380, but inaccurate with any larger caliber, then that's perfectly fine as long as they hit what they're shooting. If we really want to talk about ease of shooting here, the 5.7x28 would be best for recoil sensitive people and disabled people, and it's accurate. Myself, I carry a 1911 in 45 because it's just a classic carry. I used to carry a Beretta 92fs in 9mm, then a single action 357 magnum, but switched to my 45. My first handgun I ever shot as a child was a Ruger 1911 in 45, and I remember loving that gun and the recoil wasn't bad. I have great hand strength so it doesn't matter to me today. However, I'd be comfortable carrying a .22 just as much (I actually carry a naa. 22 magnum most days in a vest pocket). But at the end of the day, we can all agree that training *is* paramount, and caliber size won't matter if you can't hit the broad side of Lizzo. Stay safe and God bless
@northshores7319
@northshores7319 3 ай бұрын
Head shots trump all others and rifles are vastly superior to handguns. Still the size of the hole a bullet makes is tops for handguns as the bigger the hole in a blood vessel or heart, the faster is the blood loss which means the aggressor will stop fighting quicker.@@YoushouldloveyourselfNOW1738

lol no this shows how comparable they are. 45 loads seem much more finicky about barrel length and weight too, seen some of his tests that were very underwhelming. i want to like 45 its cool. even 40 is very impressive in his tests sometimes much more-so than 9 or 45. but 9mm hits well above it's weight, many of these good loads are ridiculous with the 9 and it is always going to have more capacity and likely more control. i agree the 45 was devastating and impressive but the 9 was very good as well. this is a load i want in 45 for sure, much better than critical duty which was very different in different tests depending on the barrel length. 45 seems to need more speed than people think to do anything special.

@@YoushouldloveyourselfNOW1738 I remember reading about a Police Woman who was shoot to death when she opened a door in a raid and the thug was standing there holding a small revolver chambered in 38 Special. He shoved the gun into her left breast and pulled the trigger. She was dead before she hit the ground.. Then I remembered my Uncle telling me in 1959 when I was 10, how a Japs head exploded when my Uncle shot him with a .45acp fmj bullet at close range. I think folks have not realized how effective handgun bullets can be a very close range. It is hardly ever mentioned in ammo discussions.

Thanks, another good video. This is consistent with your earlier videos on the Critical Duty. I use 135 grain 9mm in my G17 and G26 carry guns. Last week I also got 5 boxes of the +P and tested those. They work well out of both guns and no discernable difference in recoil between my range ammo 124 grain S&B FMJ, Critical Duty 135 grain, and Critical Duty 135 grain +P. As to people wondering "why would you need a round that can penetrate doors, windshields, etc.", I live in Oakland and things are getting out of hand faster than you can blink your eyes. Scenarios where I have to shoot through a door or window to protect myself are absolutely not hypothetical. Thanks man, keep these videos coming.

Hornady created these loads based on the criteria established for law enforcement requirements after the Miami Dade shooting. They had to penetrate auto glass, drywall, auto sheetmetal and other media and still show some expansion and still provide adequate penetration in flesh after encountering those media types. These are still considered to be very good for those purposes. Are they the best for your average person? That person has to answer that after considering their own needs for a protection round.

I would run either one of them in my tools. They both performed good and expanded nicely. Great test brother tools.

a even balance of expansion and penetration. some won't agree but considering the wound tracks and fair expansion. I agree with you they didn't fail only doing what they were designed to do. no complaints here. papa 😊

Just laid in some 124 grain Critical Duty 9mm and .40 which is 173 grain, if I recall. Like to see those two head to head.

Cmon ole buddy, get that CANIK TP9SFX out. 😂. Good test very nice. Ammo is worth the price. They tracked really well. I think the SFX CANIK would have kept up with the .45. Enjoyed every minute of the testing for sure. 100% on board the ship with you. Great job. Be safe. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🇺🇸

Tools can you try some budget 9 jhps in the homesteader. Like the SB which was a fail in the pistol and the aguilla which failed the gx4 but did pretty good in the p80.

Well.... it's perfect for barriers like the notorious front windshields, steel and other barriers. Once again? It's a tradeoff. The FBI's assessment over Miami Dade 1986 really shines through in the Critical Duty line regardless of caliber. Do you want capacity or do you want hard hitting? You can find really good loads in all calibers if you search around online.

These do exactly what hornady designed them to do. I still want to know if these will perform if you remove the polymer tip. Curious if the “barrier blind” would work if the polymer tip was removed before testing.

Great performance from both. That 135+P 9mm is current issue for the FBI. Have been unable to find 50rnd LE boxes, but the 20rnd boxes are plentiful at local G shows... expensive thou. Thx for the test.

Seems like all the Critical Duty always has been expensive in the smaller boxes.
