"The Star Spangled Banner" by Jimi Hendrix!!! He said more in less than 4 minutes than most guitarists do on an entire album. Jimi's version of our National Anthem included the sound of the Vietnam war in it and was a MASSIVE statement that still resonates to this day.

One of These Days would not be an instrumental. (That's Nick on vocals) Pink Floyd has many instrumentals (Mudmen, The Main Theme, etc.) My favorite is Interstellar Overdrive.

HUGE smile at #1! My fav band, I knew they'd be here somewhere, but was sure it would be YYZed. Such a great surprise that MJ gave the top honor to the rightful winner (within Rush's discography, of course.) Since I saw Geddy win the MJ #1 bassist catagory, I'm guessing they have a huge fan writing for them. Thanks guys!

Maggot Brain should be #1. It's the only song that has spoken to me without any words at all. Listening to this full blast alone with headphones is one of the most amazing feelings ever. The song brings me to tears and makes me think about my past, present, and future. Just an absolute masterpiece.

I would suggest you listen to Lifeson's AMAZING solo again. "He makes his guitar speak" is a much-abused trope. Lifeson makes his guitar orate a grand speech in this song.

'We' could all list our top ten...maybe then-there would be less complaining; and more gratitude to all the musicians who have created such magic! I think La Villa Strangiato is a better pick for RUSH. The whole band's attention to detail and use of many types of music makes it my personal favorite. Not to mention the creativity, it was based off of one of Alex's Lifeson's dreams.

I'm an instrumental fan, so when I first heard "Shine On You Crazy Diamond, I was disappointed when they started singing. The first 8 minutes?? of that song is fan-f**king-tastic. So is the rest, just not AS fantastic.

I'm not sold on all of the songs on this list, but they got #1 dead on. The absolute Rock instrumental classic. Rush's level of musicianship is on full display on La Villa Strangiato.

La Villa Strangiato!! Hell yeah! I love YYZ, but when it comes to Rush's instrumentals La Villa Strangiato takes the cake. It's a masterpiece.

In the end Strangiato YYZ and others, would be right at the top. Rush is honestly one of the greatest rock bands in history, and my #1, though not many agree :P

Although YYZ is probably my all-time favorite Rush some because it focuses on drums and bass (I play both), I can't complain with them putting LVS as #1. That song is AMAZING from a drums, bass and especially guitar standpoint.

One Of These Days technically has lyrics though, but it's overall instrumental I agree with that. Interstellar Overdrive is a fucking masterpiece, but it's not that known, at least not as known as the other songs on this list.

SuperSparrow45 Ohh sorry I didn't know this was instrumentals. Basically because Prog Rock often doesn't have very good solos. (David Gilmour being the exception). The beauty of Prog Rock often lies within the "experience" itself. I think there are far better solos in metal for example, simply because it is a much bigger focus in that music genre.

Willem Huiskamp yes, what he calls "air sculptures" theres one video on here, looks like his eyes roll back lol, he IS "in the moment" i'm sure its "black napkins" YA KNOW lol...hendix is most probably the best guitarist the world will ever see, luv him !! but,,,nothing does to me what franks playing does, i cant explain it, maybe my python boots are too tight, who knows, w/frank his playing creates chills, that start at my feet, waves of them, lol, ive used frank in a heat wave lol

Come on. There should be a Frank Zappa song on this list. He was probably one of the most innovative musicians of the 20th century, and the instrumentals he wrote with the mothers of invention are incredibly intricate and beautiful. Just listen to Peaches En Regalia for a taste.

La Villa Strangiato is just an amazing song, both technically, and the feel of it. Alex's volume swells in the middle (I can't remember the name of that part), are sighted by so many guitarists as an influence.
