I think we reached peak auto in the early 90's in terms of maintenance. Self repair was still quite easy without a proprietary computer. Parts were easy to source. Electronics had not completely taken over. Longevity was a selling point. Examples: 1991 Acura Integra, still running! 1993 Nissan pickup bought for $10,500, sold for $4,000 15 years later. Minimal mechanical issues with both vehicles, just brakes, mufflers, filters, & fluids.

What has killed the reliability of modern vehicles is the use of low-tension piston rings .. used to efffect lower engine internal friction to meet 'mandated' fleet MPG standards. Engines that now rarely can exceed 90-100k miles due to *stuck* piston rings with severe cylinder wall wear and prematurely 'SHOT' engines. ADD to that, the over-complexity and 'over-engineering' that usually leads to premature FAILURE. Just wait until the auto makers start with 'muliplexed' single wire systems - get a fender bender in a parking lot ... you will probably be 'totaled' by your insurance company due to the horrendous labor charges to find the wiring BREAK 'somewhere' in that single wire system. Realize why your 10 year old desk-top etc. computer is no longer useful (the contimuation of the 'chemistry' used to form the 'chip' and which ultimately grows nano-sized 'whiskers' that shorts-out the IC circuitry in one of (now) hundreds of chips in your 'modern' vehicle.

Its really too bad they stopped making Acura Integra. I used to have a 1996 stick shift b4 I got the Chrysler 300. It was battered and bruised on all four corners, (even my mother drove into the drivers side), deeply keyed on the drivers side by a jealous ex-wife 🙃, pooped on by a seagull, which the car wash could not remove, but the young guys always liked the Integras and I still got $800 for it. Really fast vehicle, but so is the Chrysler 300.

Toyota have had two major, global recalls in the last decade or so, as in 200 million cars recalled (most recently, involving diesel filters that blow your donk in 20,000km). In recent years Subaru and Honda have overtaken Toyota in reliability. They're nicer cars too.

@@doctorbohr1585 Incorrect. I don’t own a Toyota. Your recall misinformation is of course incorrect as well. Statistically speaking Toyota is the most reliable car manufacturer in the world with the highest resale value. The best value for the money. They sell more vehicles in the world for a reason. Honda and Subaru are excellent options as well. Subaru technically #1 in Consumer Reports. (The automotive rule book). Sadly Hondas quality has dropped as its prices have increased reducing its value proposition considerably.

I was blown away to see a video from America that actually included all mainstream American brands. For some time now, most Japanese and Korean brands have had the reliability and ownership cost attributes sewn up when you compare problems per 1,000 sold. I know of two mechanics who DON'T drive the brands they specialise in servicing.

I guess reliability is aggregate data. So if the most unreliable brand reports problems in 200 out of every 1000 units sold, those folk who experienced the problems are going to be filthy, whereas those who own the other 800 will bring in reports like yours. It perhaps varies across models in the line up too: model X will drag down the manufacturers average, whereas model Y was problem free.

So far, I haven't had a lick of trouble with the Miata, but I've had the Canyon in for failed parts about 5 times now. If I hadn't taken the 10 year extended warranty, I would have spent $1100 extra (there was some other work done, but it was for wear type items) the last time I had the truck in the shop. The best thing about the truck is that it's paid off. When the truck isn't having problems, I do actually enjoy driving it. I'm not sure what I'm going to do when the warranty runs out. If I replace it, I will be looking at the Toyota Tacoma and the Honda Ridgeline.

That's generally true. Never owned either brand. This year C.R. gives the BMW X5 and Audi Q7 high overall scores. The 2023 X5 scores 87 out of a 100, which is close to the highest of any vehicle in any category. But that considers things like acceleration, fuel mileage, quietness inside, safety features, comfort features, etc. On reliability alone, it scores a disappointing 60 out of 100 and the 2023 model already has two recalls. The Audi scores lower. Even the Lincoln Nautilus scores higher in reliability. Apparently, the more money a vehicle costs, the less reliable it is. As Shari pointed out, Mercedes is really bad. I was told that 4 new tires for the X5 will set a person back $2,000 - over twice that for some other SUVs, CUVs.

Excellent summary! It's especially frustrating to see how the big 3 American manufacturers, with the possible exception of Ford pickups, have consistently remained near the bottom for 40 years. None of them seem to understand that quality and reliability will eventually translate into market share. Instead, it's always another year of sloppy cost-cutting and bean-counting. Toyota, Honda, and Mazda, on the other hand, understand value. That said, I'd be interested to see a video on vehicle longevity, as opposed to statistical reliability. Some vehicles with low reliability scores nonetheless keep going for a long time with modest repairs, such as full size American SUV's and pickups or even some older full-size sedans like chevy impalas and ford crown vics.

@@TalkingHands308 my experience has been the opposite. I don’t know many people that drive GM trucks ( not as popular here for whatever reason) but between the Ram and F150 owners, the Fords break down way more often. In fact, most guys have no issues with the ZF trans and hemi engines. Everyone I know with a 2018 and newer F150 has had major issues. From engine replacement(5.0) to 3.5L eco boost cam replacements to electrical system failures to rear axle seals failing to rear axles blowing up from loose internal fasteners (and this was on a 2021 model) to starters failing and leaving a friend stuck in an intersection, transmission issues, etc. etc. etc. Ford has plenty of issues that I hope they resolve soon.

@@TalkingHands308 even Chris Farley is livid with their reliability problems. They used 1.6 kms of extra wiring in the MachE that wasn’t required. I’m not sure what is going on over there but I hope it gets fixed soon. I was interested in a new super duty with the 7.3 but even those engines have been having problems with delaminating camshafts and transmission failures. There have even been several reports of transmission failures with the raptor R. Chrysler transmissions were junk. No doubt there but the newer stuff appears to be better. The only issue I personally know of with a friend that drives a Ram is the air conditioner drain tube plugged up and his carpet got wet. But nothing that has ever left them at the side of the road.

Nissan is almost always on one of these lists. I can only speak of my experience - 3 Nissans in approx. 15 years (one Altima, 2 Rogues), average about 13-15,000 per year. In all that time I had my first issue in 15 years with my most current Rogue (2018) this month - bad rear bearing. Other than that - not a thing has ever gone wrong with them. My cousin has even better luck - he owns a 12 yr. old Murano with 180,000 and a 14 yr. old Altima that they handed down to his daughter with about 150,000 miles. Again, no major issues. May we are just lucky? I would have preferred it be with Powerball, but hey!

Can I offer a guess? Did your rigs have the dreaded CVT tranny? I suspect Nissans without the CVT are about what you would expect for reliability. I sold Nissans at a dealership in 2007, and was appalled at the failure rate of rigs with this new, improved tranny. Nissans without the CVT were about as reliable as one would expect. This illustrates the problem with rating "brands" for reliability, without considering the quirks of particular models and drivetrains. You really have to consider the car and the drivetrain, not the badge on the hood.

Regarding Stellantis, yes, they're known for unreliability. But being known, is different than being it. Which most of their cars, are not. That's why you shouldn't be surprised to find some of its brands to be sought out mostly by previous owners that know how good they are and not for being happy to spend more money to maintain them, which is not necessarily true. Best car reliability sources are the fleet maintenance / operational costs by car leasing and car rental companies. If you can get a hand on those, you'll find the truth - which is not 'one truth' - because it's a pretty dynamic stuff. Sometimes it happens when manufacturer changes parts supplier, sometimes happens only on specific models or specific models with specific engines / transmissions. Mostly, every brand suffers from common electronic gizmos, because electronic parts suppliers are common amongst brands. One of those examples is Bosch, which has both, pretty good stuff, and pretty unreliable stuff.

I own a 2004 350Z and a 2014 Q60S and they are well built cars with huge suspension and drive train parts relative to their size. I see many of these cars with 100 - 200K miles on them and many times these cars are pushed and driven hard by owners. Of course, all can be had with a very reliable manual six speed transmission and none can be had with the incredibly unreliable CVT which may explain why I se so many with high mileage still running strong.

I think most Infinity cars are made in the Tochigi plant. both the 3.5L and 3.7L V6's are very reliable engines. Also those cars use either a manual six speed or their 7 speed automatic. Both transmissions are reliable and last a long time. But, FWD Nissans don't seem to be as well made or as tough. The CVT Nissan uses does not seem to be very good. It seems almost like the Infiniti and the Nissan Z cars are made by a different company as compared to the regular Nissan vehicles. The durability of Infiniti and the 350 and 370 cars is far greater then the more main stream Nissan cars and SUV's.
