I agree that Midnight is the scariest episode of New-Who, but I don't agree with your reasons for thinking that, or rather, I have a different reason on top of all of your reasons why I think this episode is so scary: the Doctor. Doesn't. Win. Every monster, every villain, the Doctor came out on top, or at least did something to significantly damage their cause. This is the only time where he's about to lose. If the flight attendant hadn't sacrificed herself, the Doctor would have been dead, and that thing, whatever it was, would have been able to do whatever it wanted. That, to me, is what makes this episode so scary, and is the reason I always skip this episode whenever I re-watch Tennant's episodes.

I've only been able to watch Midnight once, I don't think I could do it again! What gets me is the end when the Doctor says "Molto bene (sp) " and Donna repeats it, you see this haunted look on his face and he just says "Don't do that..."

To me this list is proof that Doctor Who works its best when it just uses simple ideas and designs and with brilliant execution, makes them creepy. Number 2 on this spot is just a kid with a gas mask. Yet it works really well. Shadows that eat people, statues that move, just another person copying what everyone else is saying- all simple ideas but turn out to be the most effective. Less is definitely more.

I think Night Terrors is really scary. It hasn’t got the greatest word for it, and it isn’t perfect, but I think it’s really underrated(at least I like it). I don’t think it’s the scariest to me, but it’s definitely one of them, probably at my top 5.

The episode is in my opinion the Scariest Doctor Who story in both classic and new who, the scene where Amy gets turned into a doll really took me by surprise but apart from the great horror atmosphere, the story is a bit odd and not very well explained however it's been a while since I've watched it

I agree with you on Midnight. Minus the diamond planet, it's the most realistic episode of Doctor Who. This is a really plausible example of how people process fear which is why it's so unnerving. I can't imagine there'd ever be statues that move. Or a being that I only know exists during the short time it's in front of me. But people being afraid enough to kill a man out of fear and self preservation? This can happen. This does happen. It's a ugly look in the mirror....

I'm not particularly fond of this episode, if only for the fact it IS so real, the mob mentality of humans and others reminds me way too much of my psych studies in uni, some VERY bad memories! I came into modern era who as an adult, having grown up with 3rd 4th and 5th, so these stories dont have quite the impact on me as they would watching them as a child, however the vasta nerda and the angels scared the crap out of me, and I dont scare easily, I do agree with the list, but not neccesarily the order!

I think the episode with the diet pills that turn people's fat into marshmallow aliens was completely terrifying, because of the "Trojan Horse" aspect of it. Something that seems so mundane like a consumer pharmaceutical that creates creatures through body horror for fat people really drives home the illusion of such a thing being plausible.

I agree with you on "World Enough and Time" definitely. The scenes with Bill have this great tension to them, and there's just this general feeling of unease. And there's a lot of scary moments-- all the "patients" suddenly getting up when Bill is in the room, or the patient that's been muted because he's constantly screaming "Kill me!" The scenery and the mood is spine-chilling. Another aspect I like is that we've seen the Cybermen before. We've talked about cyber-conversion, but we've never really seen it. And to do that as a body horror story...

Basically, tips for a good scary 'villain' antagonist: *1.* We never actually _see_ it *2.* Unsure consequences/Unknown *3.* Knocking sounds, strange unnatural voices *4.* Entering the body (not just the mind, just literally _entering_ the body. AKA body horror/skin horror These are the 4 main keys for a scary antagonist for horror. Also just a personal thing for me: Children. When done right, children can be super, _super_ creepy. Dolls as well maybe because they're generally associated with children, so- creepy.

A young child walked up to me one day, and I could tell they were scared. He tugged on my sleeve, and asked, "Have you seen my mommy?". I screamed and bolted, which is A) embarrassing, and B) a testament to how much The Empty Child scared me. Midnight still takes the top spot for me. I will never forget certain moments from that.

I pretty much agree with this entire list. Like other commenters I do think Night Terrors is creepy but that's primarily because personally, dolls are really creepy looking. The realisation of what it actually is though, isn't creepy which is where it falls flat. For me the creepiest thing about The Waters of Mars and The Flood as a creature isn't the whole zombie thing, it's the idea that just one drop of water is enough to kill you. Forever the creepiest scene for me is where that one character (i can't remember his name) is in a dry room alone when one single drop of water leaks through the ceiling and lands on him. Then he has a seizure and changes. That creeped me out way more than the actual monsters (and i did think they were somewhat creepy). I would say just as my own personal thing, the Weeping Angels will forever be the scariest villains to me purely because of how vividly i remember the effect they had on 10 year old me.

I think the Ood are quite cute. Yes, a little bit gross but cute. There isn't really a thretening side to their look but not a friendly one either. It just kinda mixes in and makes them cute, they are one of my favourite Aliens, but the guy turning into an Ood in "Planet of the Ood" just grossed me out and stopped me from watching that episode for a while, although it is a good one.

I have also always loved the way they kept count of the silence, the markings on the skin is really effective. I personally think that the scariest moment in all of doctor who was when Amy when up to the window in the old orphanage, looks out the window, the thunder crashes and we just see her covered in markings. Good God that's scary.
@alfiethomas5632
@alfiethomas5632 5 жыл бұрын
The other scary thing about that orphanage was the caretaker. He had seen the silence every second since 1967, and every time they wiped his memory of them. They ended up wiping so much memory that for the caretaker, he hasn't seen time move on since that day in 1967 when he first saw them, which is why he is so confused when Amy and Canton tell him that it's 1969

Great picks! I also want to shout the God Complex because I love the oppressive atmosphere it creates with the canted angles and claustrophobic hotel corridors. I love how it kind of evokes The Shining with the layout changing and not making sense. I love the concept of not knowing what your worst fear is until the moment you see it. The idea of this thing getting inside your head so you go to your death willingly and enthusiastically. I think it's scary in a more subtle way and the layers add up to something that's terrifying the more you think about it.

All those who are saying Night Terrors should have been on the list, I agree. My then 6 year old sister had a dollhouse on her room at the time, and the effect that episode had on her... she was terrified. I completely agree with this list but would also have added night terrors and rebel flesh. The gangers in rebel flesh went from terrifying and evil to things you felt bad for which I love and I think is unnerving as your unsure who to trust or who is even ‘good’ in the end. Also dolls terrify me and the fact that it was a boy’s nightmare made night terrors terrifying.

There are definitely some really scary classic serials as well: 10. Survival; one of the only times the Master has actually scared me. 9. Spearhead from Space; the Autons 8. Happiness Patrol; there's just something so... wrong about how perfect it all is 7. Power of the Daleks; seeing the Daleks so manipulative and calculating is just terrifying. 6. Terror of the Autons; see number 10 5. The Faceless Ones; the atmosphere, and the Chameleons 4. The Curse of Fenric; everything about it 3. The Seeds of Doom; the Krynoids 2. The Moonbase; the Cybermen at their best. Right here. 1. The Tenth Planet; see above

Totally agree with the #1 pick. spoiler Midnight was utterly terrifying. The slow and foreign progression of "symptoms", the Doctor's inability to do anything at all- And most of all the hindrance presented in the form of humans. Normal people. Scared people. People who are scared and feel victimized are some of the scariest people, because like in the episode, they'll stop at nothing. The fact that we never figured out what the hell that thing was only adds to the fear.

Hi, I just found your channel and been working my way through your videos. I would have to add "Nightmare in Silver" as an honorable mention. I hate bugs in general, and silverfish are among the creepiest to me. I agree with your take on "Midnight" 100%. I teach English and like using it as a tool to demonstrate character and plot progression, and how mob thinking develops.

Hide was fine but its like it didnt know if it wanted to be horror or not so its all over the place. And the Doctor saying he was afraid felt very out of character as he's faced much scarier things.

I was pleasantly surprised that "World Enough and Time" made the list, because I do think it's scary, for exactly the reasons you gave, but it's not scary like the Weeping Angels, the Silence, the Vashta Nerada, or the Empty Child, so I didn't expect it to make the list.

Difficult ranking task indeed... it is difficult to argue on many pointes, so I'll give you a big thumbs up, but you nailed it with Midnight. I was wondering if you'd put it on top. You often argue things in a similar way I would, so Midnight is definitely my no.1, even if the rest is kind of fuzzy. Even as I've rewatched it, it still gave me creeps, together with Tennant's performance - like at the end when Donna wants to make an echo joke, and he says "Just don't."

The 2 parter the empty child and the dr dances were my favourite but also the ones that scared me the most for starters the monkey saying are you my mummy over and over and the radio also saying that it just felt eerie also when the tape ran out that was scary too

Heaven Sent had the idea of confessing possibly every terrible thing you've ever done to survive a bit longer, which was definitely unnerving, because it's one of those things that shows how far people will go, especially depending on what is at stake

honestly, I'm most scared by the 3 parted of utopia the sound of drums (and the last one I can't remember) due too 1 thing, the fact that eventually the universe will die and that in Dr who the way humans avoided that was to become sadistic childlike killers driven and by the end of existence. The looming presence of a end no matter how hard one struggles to avoid is one that fills me with dread.

2006. I'm 7 years old, my mum is out and and my sister is looking after me but she's upstairs, while I'm watching The Girl in the Fireplace downstairs by myself. The Doctor notices the broken clock and points out that something is ticking. From that point onwards, I was absolutely terrified.

I think I was about six when I was watching the lonely child it scared me so much. I didn't know what the gas mask was made it scared me and the scene when the soldier became one with the gas mask coming out of his mouth was weird. However watching it after being so young seeing how it developed made it less scary, yet it is still scary. then there was midnight which I saw when I was a bit older and have watched it multiple times since and it is still really scary.

For the single creepiest moment “don’t cremate me” in dark water terrified me as a kid. Especially since it wasn’t long after my Grandads funeral where he was cremated which is why I think it’s so scary. My creepiest episode however is midnight. The doctor doesn’t win and he almost died . He nearly almost always wins but this time he doesn’t.

'Fury From The Deep" (1968) Very eerie atmosphere and of course the iconic scene when Maggie Harris is choking from the fumes emiting from Mr.Oak and Mr.Quill's mouths.'Inferno" (1970) Again very eerie atmosphere with The Doctor having to watch parallel versions of his best friends die with no chance of saving them.

I agree with Midnight! I guessed it would be number 1. It is my number one for sure...had nightmares from that...i think empty and midnight are the only episodes of doctor who that have given me nightmares. Midnight is so unnerving.. the creature is so creepy and it also just grows and learns SO fast that it's just scary, because it'll take over the whole plane and it's barely doing anything. And yes the people willing to throw others off a plane and how that escalates is horrible.

I have almost seen all of David's episodes but... There are a few I haven't seen because I have seen clips and they have terrified me. Here's the list: Waters of Mars, duh! The flood! The shakespear code, I saw the first seen of the guy being ripped apart and I know a guy basically vomits water, I'm terrified of vomit. I made my friend watch it in her laptop because I said it was scary and she didn't and she kept going like "Oh yep, now he's coughing up the water" and I was just like "How you not being grossed out?!" That's all I can remember off the top if my head, I would have to look into his episode list to see. Its strange, I love the episode Midnight! I know many people are terrified of the Midnight entity but I love the concept of it, I have even made an Oc that is a midnight entity, but don't worry, he is not the same one that possessed Sky and Doc, he kills that one xD. But yeah, I love that episode! But I'm scared so easily, I don't understand why I'm not scared. :/

I agree with you.Reminded me of so many Twilight Zone episodes.It's human beings that can turn on each other. They could have ended the Doctor.Whatever that entity was, it played on humans fears and paranoia. I enjoy listening to you.Thank you.Even when you are critical of somthing, you explain your reasoning, and don't just say you Hate it.The Doctor is such a gift to us (at this time, especially)even though he/she is fictional.

I think the Empty Child is fairly creepy, but I don't really get why people rate it as one of the scariest ever. It's still a great episode, but I found it more sad than scary and then was overwhelmed with joy when everyone is cured. Also, episodes I think should be included: Mummy in the Orient Express The Name of The Doctor Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone (in my opinion even scarier than Blink) Night Terrors The Rebel Flesh/The Almost People Army of Ghosts/Doomsday I dunno, too many good ones! Hard to fit them all in. Props to you for compiling this list!

While Classic Who didn't too regularly delve into scariness, there are a few that would deserve a mention were this list to include classic episodes. Brain of Morbius is actually quite creepy. The whole atmosphere throughout was consistently eerie, with the scene where the mangled frame of Morbius rises in the background, unbeknownst to Sarah Jane, is one of the most creepy cliffhangers in Doctor Who. Another story in classic who that might be eligible would be Caves of Androzani. This story, widely regarded as THE greatest Doctor Who story ever, has a really creepy factor in the form of its villain, Sharaz Jek. The design is simple, distinct and creepy (and his eventual unmasking is a great scene) while he is played in a truly creepy and unhinged manner, something I don't think I have ever seen in a Doctor Who story. I feel like a whole video talking about Caves of Androzani would be an interesting watch.

I’ve gotta say the weeping angels just work for me (in Blink at least) so Blink is my number 1, but I completely agree, as Midnight does something that actually does the same as my favourite horror movie of all time, the VVitch, in the villain only doing something quite small which results in the people turning against one another and having to live in constant paranoia of the future. If you haven’t seen the film, go and give it watch because it’s brilliant, and midnight is probably v high on my list for that same reason.
