In a game I was in I used banishment to get rid of a troll. No one had fire spells so what we did during the minute it was banished. The troll came back to a inpromptu bonfire made of torches and a smashed lanturn. It was the mastermind rogues idea 😂

Ingredients for infinite power: Two wizards that can cast simulacrum Time. The Wizards cast it on each other, the simulacra cast it on the Wizards, rinse repeat until you have an army of magic users

If you had 2 prepared at the start of day, you cast 1 and have an extra left over.

I ran some players through Lost Mines as a first time DM and had a blast. The book is great, especially for new DMs like me, as they walk you through the paces of an adventure. I tried moving that to HotDQ and just got a bit lost. Unfortunately the group fell apart after that :-/

So glad I saw this, I recently started playing DnD (I'm loving it!), and was thinking of trying my hand at DM'ing with HotGQ. I'll keep all this in mind when planning sessions.

our druid got moonbeam off on a column of solders trapped in a tunnel once, she just ran it back and forth over them till they all burned, was awesome.

"CONTAGION" is the best Cleric spell to screw with a dragon. Have used it to defeat a white and blue adult dragon.

Running the Hot DQ now, it is prep heavy and modifiable. I attached my own timetable to the game as well, which made the decisions feel more strategic. Eltruel was an interesting city, which was fun to play in.\ with a few extra bells and whistles. I like having the room to interject my own life into it, my own vision really. +blahlbinoa Also, HoTDQ is a great first time module even though its very railroaded. Rise of Tiamat is a mess! It's everything that a lot of veteran DMs tell you NOT to do! Encounters are written poorly, certain treasures are non-existent! Not to mention using most of the stuff on a PDF that should of been part of the book! Princes is better, more open ended, though they still make you use a PDF for some of the new races. And HotDQ can be a mess if one player goes off rails and take out NPCs that shouldn't be taken out (which is what I did with my Paladin of Torm!)

+blahlbinoa I tend to fall more towards the sandbox end of the railroad/sandbox play-spectrum so I'm definitely biased against linear adventures. That isn't to say that players and DMs can't have fun with railroad style games or that one preference is better than the other though. IMO, HotDQ needed more tools to allow DMs to run a Cult of the Dragon game than specific encounters and if it was going to include set-piece encounters they needed to be more interesting than purple robed cultists and their kobold minions attack. I think what I was hoping for was more along the lines of 2e's Cult of the Dragon supplement (a toolbox to allow DMs to run their own Cult of the Dragon games) than a set of encounters linked to a central plot. And yes, I agree about RoT being a mess. Once I got hip-deep in the module I started finding all sorts of holes, errors, oversights, etc that sapped my enjoyment of the game. I decided to completely ditch the module after the Metallic Dragons, Arise! shame-fest and haven't looked back since. The players are now battling the death-metal inspired minions of a Black Shadow Dragon in the Evermoors as it tries to build an edifice of despair in anticipation of Tiamat's return.

+James Davis The big problem I saw was that it was just hastily made for 5e. My DM at the time pretty much did the same, flipping the material on it's head and doing a huge battle in waterdeep with the dragons

I think Spirit Guardians only deal damage when the creature enter your space, but not when you enter a space in which they are in range. It is triggered by their movement, or when they start their turn within range.

Aid is not actually temp hp its real extra hp and can be healed up to that point till the time runs out. It also stacks with temp hp

Glyph of Warding seems to go against the spirit of 5e at the cost of 200 gold a pop.

My favorite unexpected reaction from my players (a group of preteens at the time) was when their 1st level characters decided to negotiate with the kobold horde, instead of fighting them.

My top 5 wizard spells in no particular order would be Simulacrum, Mind Maze, Gate, Wish, and Imprisonment. Imprisonment is the most bad ass of all time, just read it's description: When you cast imprisonment and touch a creature, it is entombed in a state of suspended animation (see the temporal stasis spell) in a small sphere far beneath the surface of the earth. The subject remains there unless a freedom spell is cast at the locale where the imprisonment took place. Magical search by a crystal ball, a locate object spell, or some other similar divination does not reveal the fact that a creature is imprisoned, but discern location does. A wish or miracle spell will not free the recipient, but will reveal where it is entombed. If you know the target’s name and some facts about its life, the target takes a -4 penalty on its save.

thats just one of the 10 ways that spell can be used... you can also lock your foe in a small GEM and he can be seen when you look in there.

I'd say the best use of it in one of my campaigns, was when I used Gate to summon a Tarrasque to set siege to some Lich Warlords fortress, then instead of dealing with it, just used Imprisonment before it could turn against the party. I got yelled at by everyone for taking the risk, but it was worth it.

DJ Wise Pariah gate is only 20ft portal the tarrasque would not be able to fit through and its not a great job of DMing to even jave it try to fit through the portal for no reason. lets be real with gate and wish trying to gate a demonlord is bad enough as it would kill you for just opening a portal in his place without his premission even if he was trying to get to the matrial plane he wouldnt be gratful wish and gate are ment for interesting end game content not a onespell camaigns done lets all go home

anyway you would have a bettee chance of having a whole army march through a gate single file to see what caused it then a tarrasque trying to fit through for no reason

Is there anything stating your simulacrum of yourself cannot create a simulacrum of you which then creates a simulacrum of you, ad nauseum, giving you an infinite army of wizards? As far as I understand the clause where if you cast it again it dispels only applies to you, the original caster, and not the simulacrum created by the spell.

with animate objects you can animate a bag of daggers(10 daggers) and tiny objects when animated do i think 1d10 dmg...or maybe it was 1d8.. so you can have them make an attack so while your using that spell you can in effect do 40 average dmg a round whats awesome is the daggers have low hp but good ac... on the other end you can animate the giant statue in town and he has shit ac but 80 hp and does like 2d12 dmg or something(i dont have my phb right near me...is probably less then that)

I'm not sure about how they're using Glyph of warding. I want this to be correct but I also think it's meant to be a harming spell. Any advice/ thoughts on it?

There are 2 types of glyph explained in the book. The Exploding Runes glyph is what you are thinking of, and correct, it is a harming glyph. They are talking about the second option in the book, the "Spell Glyph" which allows for spells of equal or lesser level to be stored inside the glyph to be triggered later. It's really awesome, if you are going to have a base, HQ, or know you will have battle in an area.

Best first level spell: Chromatic Orb. 3D8 damage, and you define what element it is WHEN YOU CAST IT. No wizard should be without this spell.

amazing spell. knocked a Choker that was being grappled by a Warforged fighter off of a suspended rope 60ft in the air with that spell one time, the Warforged saved on a dexterity saving throw (sooooo lucky) and landed atop the Choker splattering it all over the rest of our party.

yeah, but each time you cast it, the spell needs a diamond worth at least 50 GP. Unless you're rich, this spell can wait till later. Remember, an arcane focus can be used in place of a material component but if a GP cost is indicated for a component, you need that specific component to cast the spell. Witchbolt, however, only needs a twig from a tree that was hit by lightning, and a To Hit roll to do 1d12 Lightning Damage per Round, for one minute - 10 Rounds! 10d12 Lightning Damage! Yes, it's only 30 feet range, but what if a monster has fallen into a pit? Or if it tries to grapple you, I would rule it's an automatic hit, if you can get to your spell pouch. If you hit in the first round, the rest of the damage is Automatic! And the way I DM, if you miss, the spell is still Concentration activated, so you can roll To Hit each round if you have to, until it becomes automatic.

The material component for Chromatic Orb is not consumed, so you only need to buy it once. Also, Witch Bolt ends if the target is ever more than 30ft away, so the target can just take a few steps back and come back.

i think that might be true gp cost isnt always consumed it says costs gp which is then consumed in the components description... if it just shows a gp value it wouldnt be consumed unless specified

Our DM had to deal with a player who abused Spirit Guardians.... so what he done was we invaded a mill which was inhabited by 3 hags - and they had kidnapped some children which we didn't know about. Needless to say they weren't included as friendlies when he cast the spell and so ended up murdering them by accident which we then had to revive.
