I don't like the term underrated. Or Overrated. They imply others are wrong which isn't the case....but they do add context, the context that I do disagree with others on where these games should rank. Higher. They should rank higher. At least if I were in charge. Which I'm not. But I can do these videos.

Estoril is pronounced “shtooREEL” (stress on the 2nd syllable and an “r” like in Spanish “pero”). You’ll still do it with an accent, of course, but that’s as close as a non-Portuguese speaker can get. And like the description of the game says, Estoril is a place near Lisbon usually connected to high society (it had Portugal’s first casino), and thus during WW2 it was a preferred place for spies to do their spying. If we go by playing games only if their names are easy to pronounce, I wonder then why Orléans, Troyes, Teotihuacan and even Sidereal Confluence are played and liked. Thanks for advocating for this game! :-)

I have always thought the terms "underrated" and "overrated" had less to do with a numerical rating and more of a general presence in the community, so more to do with how well known or how much it is talked about vs. not. For example when people say that "Gloomhaven is over-rated" I don't think they mean "that game is trash" but that, this game is talked about like it's the second coming of Jesus and I don't think it's "all that". Where as "under-rated" is more of a "I think this game deserves more love and attention than it is getting"

Excellent list! And I own half of the games on this list! City of Spies and Carson City are in my Top 10 games. Bruges (along with CoB) is one of the few Feld games I enjoy and own. Tribune is a classic. And Aquatica is my most recent acqusition which I finally got around to playing last night.

I generally use 7.0 and up as my barometer for whether I look into a game further. I did a similar thing when I played video games. My time and money is limited so I don’t feel a need to buy ok games. I want good or better and I think BGG can give you a place to start.

The only thing I'd caution is that certain things heavily bias BGG ratings, for example, some people will rate games much lower if there are "mean / take that" mechanics even if the overall game is great; also, some people will rate games much higher if there are pretty miniatures / artwork, even if the overall game sucks.

Be "arrogant" and don't trust the taste of the people. They don't know what's good. I mean, have you heard what they say? Does that sound like something you should base your game collection around?

I formerly did this. It breaks down when you get into more niche titles or titles that are for some reason not well known and therefore have few ratings.

I love this. Your opinion is always of value. Now I have a few 'new' games to look into that I don't (necessarily) have to wait 2 years to get. Looking into Carson City first! :)

I bought Aquatica and the expansion a couple months ago strictly on your recommendations but they're still on back order so haven't actually received them yet. However, I'm greatly looking forward to getting it to the table to see why you've been talking about it all year :)

Great list! I agree especially with Carson City, B-Sieged, and Bruges. Though I never did end up picking up Bruges and it's now impossible to get the expansion at a reasonable price (Hamburg is ugly, lol).

Estoril is one of my favorites. I am always shocked when I remember it's only rated a 7 on bgg. It can trigger some AP but it's just wonderful. I also have the big box version. Beautiful.

@@BoardGameCo It's ranked so low because its ugly and people probably think it's a game from the 90's simply because of the lazy AF graphic design. A solid graphic designer would make it easier on the eyes and much easier to teach. If anything it's a surprise its rated so highly given how dated even the reimplementation looks.

B-Sieged is awesome. With the original rules. Without any house rules. Period. :) Of course it was possible to win. The biggest problem was that people try to play B-Sieged as light-hearted as Zombicide. And that does not work at all. Such a false-reviewed game, seriously.

Hey Alex, thinking about grabbing b-sieged after hearing about how great it is with the newer ruleset. Any of the expansion content you think is worth grabbing or, alternatively, is just a waste of money?

I'm really happy you included that intro "There's No Such Thing As Underrated". If someone doesn't include such a disclaimer, or doesn't explicitly state "in my opinion" saying underrated or overrated or not worth the hype really seem non-sensical to me.

Played aquatica last night. It was a 10 for me even before the expansion. But I agree that the expansion makes it even better!

Got Aquatica because of your blue loving collegue (ofcourse, I know ;-)) but finding sleeves is a pain.... will have to look into Bruges and city of spies, that one might be interesting.

City of Spies is definitely underrated, no one talks about that one at all but it's such a gem. I have the super box like you that I had to order from Philibert in France. Have you tried Viral? It's by the same designers. When I played it, it reminded me a lot of city of spies in its mechanics. Ultimately though I think I'm passing on Viral and keeping City of Spies.

I agree about Bruges. I tried to get it, and it was $100+ for a copy. When Hamburg came along, I jumped on the order. Then they changed the board so drastically, that I, and many others backed out, taking a 10% restocking fee penalty. Bruges is going for $80 in some places, but I'm not quite there to be $80+ for a game.

I think, having watched Antike Duellum played, that Condottiere and El Grande are much better. But then BGG agrees with El Grande.

Thanks for a lot of good ones to look out to try. The only one I've played is Aquatica - which was an instant fail for us, especially for my wife who banned it and since that point I've sold. The issue was that it was over with too fast. I understand the basic objectives were too easy, but they really should not have been included because they soured the game too much. It's hard to justify trying a game that bad again with spending more money on an expansion. It's not that we hate faster games, but the nature of it seems to be like a deck / tableau builder and it's really an action race. I'd say that Concordia or Res Arcana are better fits for some of the mechanics found in Aquatica.

I'm super torn because I ended up getting rid of Bruges because I was hoping the new edition would clean up a few things but now that I'm seeing what Queen is doing to it, I'm a little sad because I don't like it as much

I am a big fun of both guards of Atlantis 1 and 2, however, I can understand the low rating on the 1st game: 1) it is a team game, which are not so popular on their one, let alone an "advanced" strategy game, 2) the rules of the 1st edition are very punishing when you die and also the game can take too long; both these issues are addressed on the 2nd edition, and, 3) not many people are fun of the moba style Games

Tranquility is great but my wife prefers the Game. I love Tranquility but the table space it takes up causes us to not play it as much as we play The Game. The expansions for Tranquility add more strategy to it and they’re free in the box already which is another selling point.

I'm late to the game on this video. Aquatica is a good mechanic/engine. That I feel was just attached to a high score mechanic. It's almost like the mechanic of the sliding tableau needs to be a part of a bigger game. If that even makes sense. Also, look at that cover art. It's arguably the most beautiful theme you could think of. Whenever i see it in the store, i just pick it up and stare at it. But the game falls so hard when it comes to implementing that art to the gameplay. I want to like Aquatica, but i just don't and i feel wrong for not liking it.

Funny how you went from a game that I completely disagree with you to one that I am 100% with you back to back. I played Bruges twice: didn't like the first time, hated the second. The game has everything that I could like on it, specially the card mechanism. But at the end, I was dragging and not enjoying my game of it at all. Aquatica, on the other hand, I love. I love it from my first game and I am yet to get my hands on the expansion. The solo version is meh, and I remember I played it a few times just because I wanted to play with the combos. But I found a fan-made solo which was way more interesting to play against. 7.4 is not a overall bad score, but given your criteria for the list I understand why it shows up here. It should be higher, that is true.

City of Spies is SO. GOOD. But I think it’s best compared to RoboRally. It’s a programming game IMHO.

Agree on most of these but Estoril is a great example of an awesome game that is dragged down by terrible graphic design. It's not the name, or the art, it's that it is hard to get to the table and even harder to teach because it's ugly and looks like it was slapped together in MS Paint or the 90s. Someone just needs to hire a real graphic designer instead of the lazy square everything. The retheme to Planetship could have been so good, but instead they switched out the art and some names and called it a day. This game totally deserves better I agree, but it's the whole look that's a problem, not the name or the theme.
