John Cleese said if you make a sequel, it has to be better than the original so that the audience may regard it as being as good as the original. He believed beloved originals are held up to such a high standard that sequels are often judged to be inferior even before release.

I'm also blaming the failure of Fantastic Beasts in the lack of Johnny Depp as Grindelwald. In the first one we got a weirdo villain that looked somewhere between the Mad Hatter and Willy Wonka as the most terrifying Dark Wizard before Voldemort. Then thanks to Amber Turd we got a villain that looked like the branch manager of some office.

No it's poison because it has no build up from Jean to Phoenix to Dark Phoenix. It's Jean just turns Dark Phoenix. They need a Saga of at least 3 movies. Jean gets the phoenix powers and uses it for good, Jean becomes corrupted in the 2nd and then the last is boss mode. Dark Phoenix was a remake of the last stand pretty much which was not a good dark phoenix storyline. They ruined Apocalypse as well. Hopefully we get Mr. Sinister and the nasty boys.

I knew Son of the Mask would be on here. Replacing Jim Carrey with Jamie Kennedy was a recipe for disaster. Blues Brothers 2000 without the late John Belushi was destined to fail at the box office. Caddyshack 2 was hurt by not having Bill Murray as the groundskeeper and replacing him with Dan Aykroyd trying to be Bill Murray.

What I like the most about the X-Men movies is the fact that they never tried to follow the MCU's formula or its tropes, especially after it became a trend They never relied on nostalgia, the tone always kept consistent, and they always focused on the present And Dark Phoenix kept that way They kept their sense of individuality. Top Gun Maverick is an exceptional case. I think the gap actually helped it. While a pre 1990 sequel to Top Gun probably would have done well, I doubt one between 1996 and 2016 would. In the years since, nostalgia for the 1980s has grown and Tom Cruise has been very successful at putting his PR troubles of the early 2000's behind him and winning back the love and respect of his fans.

the only good thing about the film is the music (check out the soundtrack album), but the film still sucks, it doesn't even have a single funny joke in it, and it hugely insults the first film. if the first film is a mission from god done well, then the sequel is a flaming bag of dogcrap from hell.

@@tonyacosta4574 i like john goodman, but that doesn't excuse the direction, writing and lack of creativity/energy in the sequel. the sequel never could replicate the magic and humor the first film gave us already. the first film's an icon. the sequel's not. it's not funny, it has no sense of direction, the little kid sidekick doesn't help either, it has no plot nor stakes, the antagonists aren't that memorable (illinois russians doesn't have the same ring or flair as illinois nazis), and last but not least, did i type in already that the sequel is NOT FRICKIN' FUNNY?! the only decent part from this sequel is the soundtrack. outside of that, there's nothing redeemable about this sequel. besides, even though goodman was in the blues brothers group years ago, he doesn't have the same natural spark or chemistry that aykroyd and belushi had. p.s.: who the f#@k wants a follow-up to a comedy musical car chasing classic of an icon? NO ONE!

I enjoyed Blues Brothers 2000. I also feel it was necessary. After John Belushi passed, ‘Joliet’ Jake Blues’ story needed to close as well. Also, I thought that John Goodman singing and dancing was a surprise and a treat. And are we really going to gloss over Erykah Badu’s Queen Musette?! Also, I didn’t mind Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. They did give franchise fans something (more characters from the series). Problem was they brought in too many characters with next-to-no backstory for most of them. Jade was race-swapped, Night Wolf was just there to introduce ‘Animality’, and Brian Thompson as ‘Shao Khan’ was a disconnect for me. The soundtrack is pretty awesome, though.

Resurgence would have been so much better if they focused on the human story like they did with the first one. So much good stuff in the book that spans the movies and so much backstory that was left out. What happened to Connie (car crash), the politics behind Hillers death and how that lead to Levinson stepping up into the directors role, General Adams entire backstory, how Jake and Charlie got in with Patricia and Dylan etc. So much left out. couple of things: 18:14 you can say the same thing about the MCU by now. I actually enjoyed Fantastic Beasts 3, it was cool and mysterious, obviously not perfect but there are rarely movies that are. I also enjoyed Evan Almighty, it was funny and interesting and maybe not as heartfelt as the first one but still a good movie. Also Alice through the looking-glass was cool and interesting, although after I read the books recently it didn't make any sense lore-wise and you can definietly see that it wasn't Tim Burton who directed it

Another movie sequel I think should have been on this list is Superbabies: Baby Geniuses 2. I saw VHS tapes of that movie at the 99c store some few years ago. I didn't watch Baby Geniuses but I don't know why there had to be a sequel to it.

The only 4 sequels on this list that I actually watched & also liked watching on & off are #20, #18, #12, & #8, aka “Batman & Robin”, “Look Who’s Talking Now”, “Alice Through The Looking Glass”, & “Evan Almighty”. I never really saw any of the other sequels on this list but have heard of some of them in harsh ways more often than not, so there’s barely anything I can say about the sequels that I haven’t watched. #20- I only watched a few times as a kid & liked it a little bit. Can’t believe until years later when I searched its information on the internet that it bombed hard at the box office to the point where it not only took roughly 8 years for its original franchise to get rebooted, but its poor box office reception caused the planned 5th movie to get cancelled. It’s honestly a shame that the original “Batman” franchise stopped after this sequel because I actually liked it. #18- I watched as a kid a few times & it actually made me laugh. #12- I absolutely loved watching this sequel before on & off on both Netflix & Disney+ & thought it was better than the original. The 1 major good thing that comes out of this sequel is that it explains so much about the Red Queen & why she became so evil. #8: I’ve watched this sequel before on & off as a kid at home & once or twice on Peacock. Didn’t know it was a sequel until years later when I looked up its information on the internet. Still wished this sequel got a sequel of its own to show its titular character in a better way.

I'm very proud of the fact that I have never seen any of these except for part of number 20, which remains the only movie I have ever walked out of. Thanks for this hilarious list and uh, give it a sequel? There remains so much more at the bottom of this barrel. I say this knowing that I may have seen some bombs but, I can take the pain. MOJO, stay awesome!❤ 20:32

Film companies need to accept they aren't patient enough to tell the Dark Pheonix story the way it deserves to be told. It needs to be a full season storyline in the third or fourth season of a TV series.

Alice Through the looking glass was good, but what didn’t make sense is when it showed that all the trouble with the red and white queen started over a tart???? I remember Mirana saying sadly “I ate the tarts and I lied about it. I should have just told the truth and none of this would’ve ever happened”. Was that a but pathetic to you? I’m also surprised Iracibeth forgave her like that, since it took Mirana so long to admit that she was wrong.

no, it sucked. the first one a chosen one bs plot and the sequel a time travel plot with unlikable characters, how are they better than the Lewis Carroll books that celebrate and embrace having no sense and logic and no cohesive plots? tim burton himself admitted to not like both the books and the disney animated classic. he spits on the faces of the fans of both mediums. SHAME!!!
@wak773

i don't really think it was about the tart, it was about the butterfly effect it created. kid iracebeth was upset back then, ran, hit her head, and caused it to swell. the swelling exacerbated her temper and psyche. i mean, it doesn't excuse what she's done, but i think the point was that she blamed her sister for the accident.

I was crazy about Chronicles of Riddick. Actually, I was crazy about all the Riddick movies. I can't wait for the new one to come out. I have never understood the appeal of Zoolander. Not surprised the sequel flopped. I really enjoyed Fantastic Beast the Secrets of Dumbledore. You should do a list about sequels that are better than the original. It's rare but it does happen once in awhile. Like Terminator Two, Godfather Two and Aliens.

Movie makers don't seem to understand that the success of the original is based on its being a fresh new concept. By definition a sequel lacks that. Moreover, in their haste to churn out another money-maker, the quality of the plot & writing suffer. There were lots of previous movies which kept the same characters (Nick & Nora Charles, the original Sherlock Holmes series with Basil Rathbone for example) but these were episodic with character development, good writing and involving stories.

In my version of reality, which is better written than this one, the people involved with the Terminator franchise decided, "Y'know we've told two damn good stories. Why don't we just end the franchise here and let the fans speculate about what happens next? Better that than unintentionally running our franchise into the ground with movies that undermine the original two." I have similar views regarding the Alien franchise. In my reality, Newt, Bishop, Hicks, and Ripley are all alive in suspended animation awaiting their next adventures. That's the beauty of fiction; you can say, "I reject your reality and substitute my own!" without the hazards that come with doing so in real life.

Well, they could just venture off into some other story revolving around the characters (while not canon to the book) and see how it turns out. It's the same thing that people thought when the topic of a sequel for the 1951 version of Alice in Wonderland was brought up.
