Great video, I've done a couple tuts on unity game engine after getting the idea for a silly game that I think would be funny and I'm now taking a step back and trying to get a little understanding of why the scripts and thinking about switching careers ,I essentially make garbage or as it's professionally known, packaging.

What are the foundations/core ? Can you describe them or do a video of them in explicit detail.
@iinsomniaaaaa
@iinsomniaaaaa 6 жыл бұрын
He's talked about the principles beforehand in some videos. Stef sells his python course and php course on his website, both of which cover his principles in detail, but as a CS student, these kinds of things can't really be taught in a single KZfaq video. What Stef emphasizes is work hard at what you're doing, maintain focus, and master one thing before you jump to the next. Lots of people, myself included, will jump around from interest to interest, never mastering them, and in order to be successful at anything really you need to master the principles, foundations, whatever you want to call them. Everyone is going to have a different opinion on what the most important principles are, but Stef has his programs and he teaches what he believes is most important there. With coding there's a lot of different things you can pursue or learn about but Stef primarily focuses on the perspective of the freelance developer. The truth is there's a different set of principles for each style of programming. Web development is a different ballgame than software engineering, than data science and so on. A programming language is a tool, and mastering the ins and outs of a particular tool is useless if you don't know what you want to use that tool for. Focus on what you want to do, whether that be pursuing a degree, becoming a freelance web developer, or using coding in some other way, and then focus on learning the code effectively to accomplish that goal. What Stef's KZfaq channel is good at is explaining the philosophy behind learning, walking you through the choices you have and how you should make them, and then finally how to apply your skills to earn a living. His channel isn't really a place to look for coding examples or tutorials, but I assume his courses would cover these things in detail.

tmasst07 Most of the basic programming languages, like C/C++, Java, web programming languages like PHP. With these languages, you'll understand most of the basics like variables, functions, classes, abstraction, objects etc. Don't worry if they sound daunting right now. It's only a matter of time before these things will become clear. I'd recommend you start writing basic programs from online tutorials, then buy some actual in depth books on the language you're learning. You can't really learn it by thorough reading a book, programming is more of a hands-on skill. When you get competent with basic syntax, start reading and understanding algorithms, time and space complexity. If you've read this far, there's a reason I wrote this long of an answer. When I had doubts like you do currently, there was hardly anyone to guide me. Fortunately, you'll have much better luck with the online community nowadays.

auriskv - That makes sense, Thanks for clarifying. I just find it challenging when a subject or item is mentioned and there is not a video or series of videos that explicitly describe what the creator of the video is talking about.

P.S. If you want to know EXACTLY where you start, I'll recommend searching for some online tutorials on C++. Any tutorial will do, really. Then move on to the books. C++ is a beautiful language. It has many low level components like pointers and stuff and also more modern concepts like object oriented programming. It is a very good place to start according to me.

Core is this: all typical programs involve input, output, math, conditionals, repetition, and conglomeration. These are arranged either by stacking or nesting. This is the What, but more importantly is the Why, which comes only through practice and experience. I don't have these yet, but I do know what the core is.

Happy new Year Stefan, You are helping me relax a little bit about my expectations with coding, I know I have it, but just can't get it to come out...I feel it's like dyslexia, but I'm not dyslexic...I know what I want to do, but can't formulate it, but completely understand it when I read it...I thought maybe a technical writing career would be a good choice for someone in this category, what do you think? I don't work for or know these guys at all, but i have found no book that does a better job of teaching the fundamentals than Deitel. (I've only bought 3 non-Deitel programming books.). Feel free to ask me questions on this topic. I wrote an article on this topic actually. You can find it by searching Perl6 Advent Calendar Day 6. From one newb to another, dudes.

what do you recommend for beginners?
@COMB0RICO
@COMB0RICO 6 жыл бұрын
Whether you are a beginner or not, I don't think the programming language matters. I learned with C++ and wouldn't consider myself talented at all with programming. I then went on to "learn" (read a book) about Perl6, C, and Java. All programming languages are like 90% the same, just a different veneer. But it makes more sense to learn a language that you see businesses posting employment want-ads for IN YOUR AREA . The best bet for a non-degree holding individual would be with the "start-ups" businesses. However, if you don't have a college degree, its going to be easier getting a job on the web development route with Stefan's recommendation: HTML5, CSS3, PHP7, THEN JavaScript. Hope that helps!

Hi Stef, what would you suggest: working with local clients (city, country) or trying to get work through freelance sites and networks (worldwide)? Thanks Stef.
@Kwisatsoundman
@Kwisatsoundman 6 жыл бұрын
David Basil I don't know if it can be useful to you, but I personally find that (most of the time) local clients tend to pay you at a higher rate than the ones you can get on big freelancing platforms, because the second ones care more about getting an affordable price and your ability to work very fast, and less about the quality of the final result, which can be very frustrating because in this case you often get the impression that people don't value enough your skills. Plus, speaking the same language and talking face to face with local customers (at least from time to time) makes things much easier.

I am seriously considering buying your courses. I haven't looked at your website yet...I am a HVAC tech. Have been so most of my life. My "soft skills" are as close to perfect as I will ever be in my current industry. What I do is highly technical and multi faceted. My sales experience is in selling jobs as small as a quick 100 repairs to hundreds of thousands for major projects. I have never sold mutli million dollar projects but would bat an eye at the opportunity. I work for myself and perform 99% of the work. Those jobs are just not realistic for a one man show. Now for my problem...one I think you may be able to assist with. I am intellectually bored to the point of exhaustion. In the early 2000s I studied computer science but didn't get a degree. For the last few months I have been studying mainly python, html, css, c#, angular and nodejs. Have been using Visual studio primarily. In my profession I have been a leader for over 10 years and spent many teaching. The fundamental principles is where I always start. Here this is confusing due to the emensity of web and software technology. I have always been the top tech in my world but starting something so new and so vast at 40 has proven difficult. Mainly because every path I've taken provides only a superficial understanding of the information. I am a very technical person and can learn very quickly. What do I learn? How do I get to the point of development? It seems as if every corner I round sends me through a whirlwind. I am spending a small fortune on a business web site so for the sake of learning I think "I'll build and maintain my own site" this will save money and teach me a great deal. What I want is a site where customers can log in, view work history, see upcoming maintenance work with prices, schedule work that links to my calendar. Difficult for a new guy but I'm making progress. Then there is security. There is also a scalability issue because what I see is proof of concept due to my current position. One that if done properly will be presented to companies that support thousands of service companies in the HVAC electrical and plumbing industries...a potential pipeline of business that could be life changing for everyone involved (end users included). My greatest question is if this is too great for one person to succeed in? I know no one else willing and able to handle the technical part of things. Professionally I've learned to trust very few if anyone. Proof of concept is what I am working on now. The next step is currently beyond my comprehension.

If you're going to bother marketing yourself, you should do it right. Get a graphic designer to help you make your site look professional. Not pretty. Professional. You might even be able to trade your skills for theirs to get it done. Just throwing up some pics isn't going to do it. Don't get anybody. Get a real graphic designer. A real graphic designer that is properly trained understands how graphics and psychology work. It makes a difference, and you owe it to yourself to do it right. After all, anybody and read a book and throw code together. You're hopefully marketing yourself as a true professional that does the job right. Extend that to your online presence and do that right as well.

Hi Stef, I was reading a book called "practice perfect" and it says "if you practice wrong you are just getting better at doing it wrong". So in terms of coding, what is your advice on practicing coding right for a noob like me?
@StefanMischook
@StefanMischook 6 жыл бұрын
Start with a good course that teaches you the core / foundations well. Once you know that, you will practice perfect as you continue to learn because you will be self correcting. It's like a singer who learns to hear the music properly, he or she will hear when they are in key or not. Makes sense?
