My biggest tip would be to not disregard bad ads. I picked up my OBS from an old guy who couldn’t upload photos and had basically no description, all I knew when I called was it was a diesel F250. So I called him cause there’s nothing to loose but time and he sent me photos over email. Drove 2 hours and picked up my unmolested $1600USD 150k mi truck the same night.

Talk to people. I say hi and ask about their truck! Hand them a business card, mention you’d be interested in it if they are thinking about selling. Bought multiple vehicles this way

The one tip I'd want to add is, ask friends and get them to ask their family friends, etc. Legit mention to anyone you meet, you want a diesel truck. There are a lot of situations that involve an older guy (retired age) who hates computers/smartphones, his kids don't want an old truck and don't have the time to list/answer emails and setup viewings, and he isn't listing it anywhere, but would happily sell it. Just need to find those guys! They're out there! (on a side note, go for a drive. Sometimes they're just listed in a rural driveway with a window "for sale" sign!)

I bought my original owner 97 Cummins 12v 5 speed 4x4 from a 70year old retired firefighter. It’s a California truck with zero rust and the body is absolutely perfect, but the paint was done.

Gateway does not finance. They do use a credit union however you have to have excellent credit because they do not use the vehicle for collateral. I know this because I tried and was denied.

Like he said newspapers and local sources are great ways to find grandpa trucks, but If you don't care about is being the cleanest then j would recommend to talk to old farmers, great way to find some great old farm trucks, may not be the cleanest, but they normally run good

Perhaps watching this would have saved me some trouble, but honestly, I've found more enjoyment just thinking about the process of restoring my truck to mint condition. My truck is a 1990 Ford F-350 CCLB dually with a 7.3 IDI, and I bought it for 5k because it had less than 200k, a good running engine, a manual transmission, and a nearly pristine interior for a 32 year old truck. So my tip is, if you want a great deal, don't be afraid to put some work into your truck.

Bought my 2nd gen from an older guy off Facebook yardsale. Pictures weren't the best, everybody said it was gonna be a pile of junk and a rust bucket. Went out to the guys house, thing was fucking mint. Had some body rust, but the entire undercarriage was rock solid and the truck overall was pretty well taken care of and completely stock, aside wheels and tires. Bought it for 6000 with 225k on it, thing is still going strong to this day

I live about 40 minutes from gateway and they sell some of the cleanest low mileage trucks i can find but jesus are the expensive

I love my truck, and thought about possibly selling it and getting into a newer vehicle post graduation and post employment. However I think I am going to build the truck and hold on to it for as long as I can. I enjoy going through the maintenance and knowing that things are done correctly, much like what you demonstrate in your vehicles. BringATrailer.com is a great specialty vehicle auction site to utilize also and they occasionally list classic diesel trucks. Be prepared to pay there though, as any diesel truck listed there is likely to be a very clean low mile (for an old diesel truck) example. The last 1st gen sold on there went for $35K: bringatrailer.com/listing/1992-dodge-power-ram250-cummins-turbo-diesel/ There is a clean '91 W250 1st Gen on BaT right now: bringatrailer.com/listing/1991-dodge-ram-4/ Check Ebay religiously too, there are a couple dealers/individuals who specialize in good condition 1st/2nd Gen Cummins and OBS Fords on there. They move a lot of trucks from Oregon/Washington that are clean examples. I noticed you didn't mention the place Missouri that seems to have a never ending supply of super clean diesel trucks- we keeping that secret squirrel info? Also, please for the love of god DO NOT buy someone else's heavily modified (engine/trans) diesel truck UNLESS you know the seller/builder PERSONALLY- 90% of the time you are buying someone else's problem. If you buy someone's 1,000hp race truck that they're selling for surprisingly cheap you're going to have a bad time. Hey if you do though, let us know on CompD- we enjoy a good laugh. If you buy a clean 1st or 2nd gen and put Forces on it or do a shitty 4th gen bumper swap you will bring great shame upon your ancestors and will be cursed for all time. You were warned.
