Hello! It's me, from the video. Can confirm I was running a 32x18 on 700x50mm tyres which was just about perfect for the VERY mixed terrain!

He is clearly riding the whole trail in his 1st gear ;)

Edit: it's also just kind of a bad photo. The shadow there makes it look like the braze has a gap or is much more uneven - IRL this is not the case; the tube is solidly joined all the way around. Silver my friend, very hard to get it to form a neat fillet like bronze, especially as this was a personal frame built in a very tight timeframe so the priority was getting it joined rather than aesthetics! Think the shadow in that shot makes it look a lot more uneven than it is for real. In any case, it's plenty strong so far after 3 months of getting hammered so I'm not worried despite how it might look to some eyes.

Having been a fanatic gravel cyclist since the last 6 years, I would personally not ride a dropbar anymore if the tyres are 2.25" or wider (unless you just temporarily put them on your only bike to make it more rideable in the muddy winters). That said, the bikes I enjoy watching most are the custom built ones, especially because there can be so much variety in them and I enjoy hearing new point of views about people their set up choices. I actually really appreciate the unorthodox set ups, even if I would often not choose the same myself.

One reason for mine personally is that a lot of the paths and trails I ride get quite overgrown in summer. The drops mean my hands don't take quite as much of a battering from nettles and brambles as they would with a wider flat bar. Plus, it's fun to change things up! Obviously I still reach for the hardtail for ultimate speed and control in the rough stuff, but for general riding I like the drops as it's different, especially if I'm out all day.

@@mrtnknrr I agree everyone should ride whatever they feel it's the best for them, I'm in no place to tell someone what they should/shouldn't ride. I also agree gravel has such a wide range of terrains and bikes and that makes it really hard to define but also very fun...at the moment I'm riding gravel/singletrack on a specialized Roubaix, many times I'm thinking "I should really have a Diverge/Aspero/Checkpoint/whatever for this" but in the end is always fun. I guess if I was racing that grinduro I would just slap a drop bar and gravel shifters on a XC hard tail for the "optimized" solution...

@@cmgt1d it's like I said on the response above (or below, not good with this internet stuff) there are so many different combinations that in the end it really maters if you're having fun... I'm a fan of "one bike to rule them all", mostly because when I had multiple bikes one (or two) would rarely be used. Depending on where you live that means constantly changing parts, which is ok, specially if you believe you're a good mechanic haha...

He's saying one size front end of any particular bike can accommodate different preferences in seat tube angle and length, not that there's only one size

@@TomvanHalen Reach isn't measured by the position of the seat so it will remain the same across sizes.

Depends if you can pass that saving on to the customer. Everyone wins.
