What are the top 5 design failures that you should look out for on a Toyota Landcruiser 200 Series? In this video I detail my top 5 design flaws in this otherwise excellent four wheel drive. In my opinion, some of these flaws, left unchecked, could reduce the lifespan of your 4WD. If nothing else, it is something to keep an eye on if you already own this 4WD, and something to check if you are inspecting a Landcruiser 200 to purchase. It should be noted that this is my opinion only, based on my personal experience. Your experience may vary.
If you enjoy this video check out my 200 Series Landcruiser build review series, starting with episode 1 here.

Coming from the petrol version expirience. 1. Gear hunting resolved till 150 kmph after that it is same as you described. 2. You are correct about air box, the sand slips to clean side. 4. The LC200 facelift in 2012 introduced good projector lamps. Hence this issue appears fixed. 5. The leaning is also fixed in later years. 6. The HVAC louvers get misalinged if care is not taken while changing the cabin air filter. 7. The clanking noises as the vehicle gets little old, when shifting from Park to Drive or Reverse.

Hi terry , liking these ‘tech talks’ . I have said it before, that is one nice truck you have built. You look to maintain it meticulously. I chuckled a little when you went through the vehicles shortcomings in standard form. It must be in Mr Toyota’s DNA, because you could have been talking about my 2013 Hilux !; poor headlights where I have upgraded the globes, the transmission that sometimes struggles to hold top gear at a 100kmh and which I service every 2 years with full synthetic oil - despite the OEM service schedule not even mentioning an oil change - & have added a HD cooler to help with the heat. And coincidentally my passenger side rear has sagged about 20mm. Like yourself I suspect, I am checking the air box regularly. Luckily my model’Lux has the big bonnet air scoop for the inter cooler. Keep up the good work..,I’m learning heaps. Cheers

Brilliant feedback, thanks for taking the time and sharing your thoughts. I had no idea the Luxies had similar issues, that’s almost uncanny. Good to see Toyota are not prejudicing the Landcruiser with their crap design and are sharing the love😂. Cheers👍😎

Perfect timing Terry!!!! Pub booked for 5 o'clock, I can still enjoy your video before I head out. 1)- Agree 2)- Agree but if Toyota isn't concerned about, is it really dangerous? 3)- Agree my main concern is performance at low speeds (low range steep climbs) 4)- Mmmmm 5)- I don't have it, it can't fail 6)- Mmmmm 7)- What about the annoying chime? But you are right you had a good rant, perhaps you need to come to the pub with me tonight..... Cheers

Thanks for the comments and the laugh Max. The only thing I would say about the dust issue is that you may be right, Toyota are not concerned so why should I be. For me it’s my nature, I have never seen any visible dust on the clean side of the filters of any car I have owned so that’s my expectation with this one. Maybe that’s unrealistic, maybe it’s not an issue, but in my mind it is. Time for a beer or three! Cheers🍻

Best "Rant" ever, everything you said is valid 100%, I would add to the list, the downgrade in the cargo area compared to the 100 series. The 200 has bolt in third row seats instead of latch removable (downgrade) and less in the way of factory storage pockets (downgrade). These cruisers are getting more expensive but worse in a few areas.

The headslights....so true that said they are better, as you will know, compared to the 80 series, esp the twin headlight 80 series. Its like they got a blind person (from birth) told them what headlights are and just let them go ham. Low beams are almost dangerous in the stock form.

Hi Terry, Spot on with all your points. Our 2008 gxl drives so much better since i added the stocklock, headlights upgraded, no kdss to worry about but the airfilter system is the next mod. Wouldn't it be even better if they came standard with a rear locker? All I'm waiting for is you to do my bonnet conversion (haha) and all will be sweet. Stay safe my friend all the best Eric and Janet from Adelaide.

First off, thanks for great videos. On to my point, at least you don't have the back seat of the 2006 120 Prado. I do, I bought it two weeks ago. Someone too advanced for me designed the isofix point in the 60% part of the 60/40 back seat in the center of the 60% part, as opposed to centered on the outermost seat. It effectively takes a seat row with the capacity to comfortably seat three children in cars seats, or two children and an adult, and makes it into a two-seater. As a fresh (almost six weeks now) dad of three (we just got twins). Keep the vids coming! And if you have a recommendation for a 120 Prado series, please let me know. Also, if you have pointers for good websites for hop-ups, please include some :) Yeah, headlights on these Toyotas is a joke. Cheers!

Sounds like they will have an awesome dad who will be able to teach them heaps! Sorry mate, I don’t know much at all about the Prado 120, or any model Prado for that matter. I’m sure someone who reads this might help out. That’s the amazing good and cool part about social media. Keep the shiny side up mate, and enjoy the additions❤️😎

Toyota have always been way to slow to correct issues with their vehicles. But as owners typically just pay to fix the deficiencies themselves they have very little reason to bother.
@JafffaAdventures
@JafffaAdventures 4 жыл бұрын
That’s a very good point Jason, I never thought of it that way. Couple your point with the fact that the owners who do not think there is an issue are really just clueless, and you get the perfect recipe for doing nothing. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment, I sincerely appreciate it mate.👍😎

Hello again. Following from my question & your reply yesterday , have you ever checked your vehicle weight ? I’ve only had my 2nd hand GX for 2 weeks & trying to learn any tips & tricks. So my GX has a bullbar & winch that’s it & with me & a full tank of fuel weighs on the scales at 2920kg = 430kg spare so it bamboozles me how many vehicles must be over their gvm ? 2 for now from your 5 glitch points , would driving in manual mode & selecting 6 when cruising appropriately help the downshift & transmission heat issue ?
@JafffaAdventures
@JafffaAdventures 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Gary, good questions. I have never had mine weighed but I would suggest it would be close to if not over GVM, especially when fully loaded for a big trip. I suspect most would share your experience hence the reason GVM upgrades are so popular. I exclusively drive the vehicle in manual mode and select 6th. This is not for heat issues but because it rarely selects 6th on its own in automatic mode. The transmission map is that crappy. A remap will fix this as I understand it. Driving in manual mode will not address any heat issues, the heat is generated exclusively from torque converter slip. The only way to prevent this is to use ridiculously light throttle application, a torque converter lock up kit, or a remap. Thanks for watching and commenting mate, I sincerely appreciate it 😎👍

Hi Terry, We got our new Sahara just over 12 months ago. It was purchased as a tug for our caravan. I would like to add some extra grips of mine, The GVM at 3350kg is pretty pathetic so we were forced to do a GVM upgrade so as not to dun too close to the line as if something goes wrong, I would our insurance company would swoop on it like a magpie. The second gripe for me in the pathetic infotainment system in a car that is worth over $100k. One more to add, no TPMS! As a result we have added upgrades to remedy Toyota's shortfalls but the TPMS I got does cater for the vans tyres too so it's only a half fault by Toyota. Rant ended!
@JafffaAdventures
@JafffaAdventures 3 жыл бұрын
Good rant Greg, I hear ya loud and clear. I don’t think our expectations of a 100K+ car are over the top and Toyota falls short in a lot of areas. I don’t tow so GVM is not an issue for me but I understand it’s a serious shortcoming for those like yourself that do. Thanks for watching and ranting Greg, if nothing else you should feel a bit better for it😎👍

Considering your experience with the transmission oil after the previous owner of your 200 towed a caravan, would you recommend not buying a second had 200 having over 150k on the clock and had been used for towing ? I guess the size/type of the van would need to be considered.
@JafffaAdventures
@JafffaAdventures Ай бұрын
The biggest influence is how you drive it. Using S mode and shifting manually can save a lot of torque converter slip and therefore high fluid temps. I would be questioning the dude who owned it beforehand. If he says, ya mate drop it in drive and go for gold, that tells me he probably does not have a lot of mechanical sympathy. Cheers😎👍

Hi Terry which transmission fluid would you use on your 200 series Toyota WS or aftermarket fully synthetic.?
@JafffaAdventures
@JafffaAdventures 3 жыл бұрын
The first time I did a transmission fluid flush I used Toyota WS. It was VERY expensive ($75 for 4 litres). The second time I did a transmission flush I used Penrite ATF LV. It's listed by the manufacturer as being WS-compatible, and as being suitable for the 200. It has a flash point of 219ºC, which means that the fluid starts to break down at a temperature almost 45º higher than Toyota WS fluid. It's also significantly cheaper ($45 for 4 litres). I have just got back from a month long trip in Cape York where I subjected the 200 to some seriously harsh conditions. The auto never missed a beat with the Penrite LV. I will be changing out the fluid once again in the coming weeks and will do a video of the process. If that's of interest you can subscribe to get a notification when the videos are released. cheers.

If I'm looking at buying a diesel 200 what else do I look for (besides dust getting past the filter) in regards to a potential fault caused by dusting. I'd hate to buy one and spend $20k or more for a new engine. Tia
@JafffaAdventures
@JafffaAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
As you noted, dust getting past the filter is one. Scrutinise this very closely. Some just pop off the filter lid. Who knows the owner may have cleaned it. Pull the intake pipe off and look as far up the intake that you can. Any signs of dust, run away. There are lots of choice out there, it’s not worth the risk. The other thing you can do is get a compression test. A dusted motor will have lower compression in one or more cylinders, that’s a dead giveaway. Enjoy your search Mark, there is plenty of quality out there. Cheers👍😎

I could not disagree more strongly mate. The shift point from 5th to 6th is rubbish and selecting 6th is like trying to find the holy grail. There is a whole aftermarket industry built around remapping these boxes, and once remapped the issue is sorted. Cheers😎👍

I drive a 2018 MQ Triton, wanna talk spectacularly crapulous headlights........well, enough said really......not really.....High beam may as well not exist. I had to wire in aftermarket fog lights and a light bar to use on high beam.......but only outside urban areas, with a separate switch for each and aftermarket spotlights. The DRLs are almost as useful at night as headlights. My son works in the mehanical service department of a large Sydney Toyota dealership.......I'll pass on your regards. Cheers

For a brand that used to be viable to us as vehicles on our cattle properties, the V8 Land Landcruisers in both 200 and 70 series are no longer viable. NO vehicle that pretends to be a remote vehicle eats dust past a filter. Never is this acceptable. Forget the Hilux, it's for posers. The headlights are crap, the air intake on the 200 is a joke, and the long term oil pump weaknesses destroying the engines out here is unacceptable also. Beware on buying a high km Toyota in theses series.

Hi Mate, i am not sure if i am too late about your transmission issue.. have you ever tried disconnecting the battery for about 10 mins? The ecu learns certain things from previous driving habits and as you mentioned it was used for towing alot which might be the reason why it drops a gear and holds on to it more then needed.
