The 1965 father's incident was the Vietnam conflict, and "over the line" referred, likely, to fighting spilling over into Cambodia or Laos territories, which were off limits to USA military forces (despite many skirmishes, as well as the CIA Air America program that illegally transported heroin from the area to the states taking place there) My father WAS an F-4 pilot in that area at this time, and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for shooting down a MiG-21 in hairy conditions, saving other airplanes.

Fun fact Maverick's father "Duke" Mitchell is based upon a real life pilot. Commander Randall "Duke" Cunningham who was a Navy combat pilot. Cunningham and his RIO Commander Patrick "Willy Irish" Driscoll were the only US Navy flying aces of the Vietnam War. During the war they shot down 5 enemy aircraft, three of them in a single flight earning them the Navy Cross. He later became an instructor at TOP GUN and eventually a US Congressman. By the end of this movie, Maverick would have been up for the Navy Cross and is 2/3 of the way to Flying Ace status.

9:12 There is a KZfaq channel called Legal Eagle run by a lawyer who reviews movies for legal accuracy. He had a colleague who was a military lawyer (aka JAG) officer review Top Gun. Suffice it to say this bathroom stunt and the other stunts Maverick pulls in this movie would have gotten him thrown out of the US Navy and put in prison. The character Ice Man is meant to portray an antagonist to our main character Maverick. However, he is actually a mature and professional pilot.

This movie became a huge recruiting bonanza for the US Navy. Everybody wanted to be a fighter pilot. I was in ROTC at the time and my instructor was was of the first Top Gun grads. Amazing pilot. Capt was so knowledgeable on all kinds of aircraft. Flew over 40 types and was even a stunt pilot in the movie "Tora Tora Tora" which recreated the Japanese attack on pearl harbor.
@TrentRidley
@TrentRidley 5 ай бұрын
That recruiting bonanza was no serendipitous coincident, the Pentagon helped fund Top Gun and even rewrote parts of the script. The same is true of many US war films. Hollywood movies may just be the US Military's greatest propaganda asset.

Fun fact this and another Tom Cruise movie spawned an incredible TV franchise. In Top Gun Tom Cruise portrays a US Navy Aviator. Lt. Pete Mitchell is the son of a deceased Navy Aviator. In the movie A Few Good Men he portrays a US Navy attorney aka a Judge Advocate General (JAG) officer. His character Daniel Kaffee was the son of a well respected nationally famous deceased attorney. Military pilots and lawyers are two very different occupations which require years of training and study. Around 1994, veteran tv producer Donald Bellisario who had a penchant for creating shows about military characters came up with a bright idea - what if both characters were the same person. So he pitched the idea of JAG to NBC and the show launched in 1995. The main character of JAG Lt. Harmon Rabb Jr is a US Navy attorney who also was a US Navy Aviator. Prior to the start of the show an issue with his eyesight required him to give up flying. The show ran for 10 years and showed how his former and current occupation would require him to go above and beyond in the courtroom. In Season 8 of JAG, Rabb becomes the primary suspect of a murder case. In a two part episode members of the US Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) are introduced to look into the case. A few weeks later, the spinoff show NCIS covering these characters was launched on CBS. This show followed NCIS agents in Washington DC. Later a spinoff called NCIS Los Angelos was launched. Then another spinoff came about NCIS New Orleans. Then another spinoff NCIS Hawai1. Then another spinoff NCIS: Sydney. As of the writing of this post, another spinoff NCIS: Origins is slated to start in late 2024. NCIS: Los Angeles and NCIS New Orleans have ended but the original NCIS show is still running almost 21 years later!

"You! You are still dangerous. But you can be my wingman any time." "Bullshit! You can be mine." Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Adrian Pasdar. Five Dollars Fact: The real Top Gun School imposes a $5 fine to any staff member that quotes the film. Let's Go Fact: Riding on the back of this film's success, the U.S. Navy set up recruiting booths in the major cinemas to try and catch some of the adrenaline charged guys leaving the screenings. They had the highest applications rate for years as a result. Real Viper Fact: Charlie's (Kelly McGillis) "older man" date at the officer's club is Rear Admiral Pete "Viper" Pettigrew. No longer in service, the F-14 Tomcat was an amazing aircraft, my absolute favorite to watch perform demos at air shows. Short roll vertical take off, high speed pass, and minimum radius turn were the highlights, nothing quite like it…

Ahead of her time, until time caught up and overtook her 😢 I liken the Tomcat to a ballerina who eats too many hotdogs… beautiful and graceful despite her size. It’s a shame that a “political” decision (Dick Cheney didn’t like Grumman) was made to not upgrade her, even when the proposed upgrades would’ve made her almost as formidable as the F-22 (just without the stealth).

1. An old shipmate of mine was on the Enterprise when they filmed this. 2. Gooses death was not Maverick's fault. Iceman was bogarting his LOS approach and they got caught in the jet wash. 3. I spent 24 years in the US Navy. 6 on "bird farms" (Carriers). I have seen 1000+ launches and landings without a single crash. These men and the men working the flat tops are doing the most dangerous job in the world (for the good guys). Shout out😎 4. Kelly McGillis/Charlie was in a super cool movie with Harrison Ford "Witness" that's seriously worth a first time/share HINT HINT 5. Tom Skerritt/Viper not only played Dallas in "Alien" he also played Strawberry in "Up in Smoke" with Cheech and Chong. 6. Val Kilmer/Iceman has a long list of movies including but not limited to: "Willow", "The Doors" and "Tombstone" 7. Goose is the RIO (Radar Intercept Officer) radar, communications and navigation. 8. Onboard the ship the Squadron leader would not be smoking a cigar in that operation space. 9. Meg Ryan is my honey. A great overlooked movie with her is with Tom Hanks called "Joe vs the Volcano' She plays 3 parts. HINT HINT 10. Onboard the ship/aircraft all the perspiration is Hollywood(not the pilot). There is AC onboard. 11. The TOP GUN school is no longer located at Miramar near San Diego. It's now at NAS Fallon, NV. 12. In 1991 I was stationed on the USS INDEPENDENCE (CV-62) and they made a movie onboard called "Flight of the Intruder". It was seriously cool. Brad Johnson, Willem DeFoe and Danny Glover. I'm actually in it for a very brief period of time. HINT HINT. 13. Watching/sharing the new "Top Gun Maverick" is a must. The ariel work in that movie makes this one seem like they were practicing.

Im a Navy brat, meaning when I was born my father was in the Navy. In fact I was born on a Marine Corp Air Base. The Navy and Marines are related. We lived on Kaneohe Marine Corp Air Base in Hawaii when this movie came out. Of course all my friends from school out in town wanted to come over to the base and watch the jets fly around. Also, the base had a really good beach for surfing. My dad was home every night , except once in while he would go "on float" (out to sea) for 6 months with West-Pac Fleet. But I had some friends who's dads were Navy Seals and they had no idea where their dad was. The military doesnt tell the families that their husband/father is jumping from a perfectly good plane tonight over Somalia to rescue hostages from pirates. We never know about that stuff. Check out a video called Seal Team Six Rescue Jessica Buchanan.

Love watching your reactions. I was 14 when this original came out. Then had to wait 37 years to see "Maverick" the sequel. Must be nice to see them back to back. lol. BTW, I always took the "Maverick will back him up" order at the end to mean Maverick was given the superior task of backing up, that's why Ice immediately asked the Commander if Maverick was the best pilot. I don't think Ice was worried that Maverick would "back him up".

Top Gun has a 57% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. An interesting example of when critical reviews maybe don't match how totally iconic something is (and how fabulous in its own way?). Those Tomcat F-14s were a lot faster than modern high tech fighters. Speed was crucial. The top current one - the F-35 - is amazing (stealthy, deadly at long range etc) but only 80% as fast. Very cool!

I was absolutely obsessed with fighter planes, when I was a kid. My family lived just outside the east coast's Master Jet Base, Naval Air Station Oceana. Both my parents were in the Navy. I heard overflying aircraft so often, I learned to identify what was flying over, just by the sound of the engines. My folks took me to this movie, and I loved it! The next day, my Dad took me to Oceana, and sat me on the back porch of the aircraft control tower with a camera and a handfull of change for the snack and drink machines inside. I still have the pictures I took, of the planes in flight.

In 1986, I had just finished school at University of California at San Diego, located on the coast in the city of La Jolla. Naval Air Station Miramar was just up the road, and jets regularly flew over the campus on their way out to sea. One day, someone flew faster than Mach 1. I happened to be facing perpendicular to his direction of flight; I heard the shock wave in one ear, then quickly in the other. I saw this movie in the cinema that year, and the crowd cheered when Miramar was named on screen. During the Clinton administration, there was a shake-up involving many military bases. In the Maverick sequel, the Top Gun school is said to be located at Naval Air Station North Island in San Diego. That is not its actual location. Sundown, Maverick's RIO officer right after Goose died, was played by the same actor who played Theo ("the Police have themselves an RV") in Die Hard.

The point at the end of the movie of Maverick being told that the “other side“ denies that the incident ever happened is to show the audience that is exactly what happened with Maverick’s dad during the Vietnam war. The US government denied that his dad was shot down because it happened geographically over a country where the United States was not supposed to be conducting the war (China, Cambodia, Laos ?) according to the agreed-upon treaties and international rules of war. Never mind that the North Vietnamese never abided by any of those agreements or rules and actively used them to kill Americans. The military folks have to tell the families of the dead pilots and air crew something so they just tell the family they went out in their airplane and apparently screwed up and crashed causing their own deaths and the loss of a very expensive piece of US war material along with whatever secret technology built into the plane or its weaponry may have fallen into the hands of the enemy due to their negligence. “That was the stink of it.” The same type lie will be told to the families of the enemy pilots and aircrew who died in the dogfights at the end of the movie, since the incident “never happened”.

35:44, the air combat in Vietnam that claimed the life of Maverick's dad took place on the wrong side of a border on a map. So the US government classified the whole mission and over time Duke Mitchell's name got drug through the mud with innuendo. But thanks to Viper, Maverick found out what really happened - his dad died heroically. So despite everything else Maverick didn't have to fly with a sense of shame on his family anymore.

The plane didn't malfunction when Goose ejected. The engines quit burning, called a flame out, which occurs when the airflow into the engines is greatly disturbed such as due to violent maneuvers or unusual attitudes of the airplane. More modern engines are less susceptible to flame-out.
@paulsander5433
@paulsander5433 5 ай бұрын
In this case, the flame-out was caused by flying through the other plane's jet wash. That is the exhaust from the other plane's engines, which has a high water content, the by-product of oxygenating (burning) hydrocarbons like jet fuel. Someone described this to me as like pouring water into a carburator, which kills an engine.

16:58 - Interesting fact, the elevator scene was shot long after production had wrapped. The asked the actors to come back because they needed to include this dialog for some reason. Kelly McGillis's hair however was no longer blonde. This is why she is wearing the cap in this scene. Anyway definitely review "Top Gun Maverick". It's a much better film.

Your instincts were right during the bar scene where he serenades Kelly McGillis, she's a lesbian in real life, even if her character wasn't

DO NOT DO 'lovin feelin' in a navy bar. EVER! Also 'mighty wings' greatest track of this movie AND sequel. Submarines? Welp it's a totally different experience.

I'm gonna try that with my cute female neighbor. Just knock on her door and when she answers I'll say "Hey, you don't mind if I take a quick shower, do ya?" I'm sure she won't mind. I'll even bring my own soap to really seal the deal.

First, thanks for insulting the naval aviators (just playin) by calling them the Air Force ( different branch of thr military) but I have a weee bit of a connection to this movie. The restroom where Maverick followed Charlie into is at the former RTC Naval Bootcamp San Diego,Centeral Command Center. While i was in boot i was tasked to clean that bathroom. Only rrason i know its the same place is because there was a brass plaque on the outside of the door that said " Ladies room used in the filming of top gun". Also one of the MiG pilots was once my XO , ( then Commander, now retired Admiral Robert "RAT" Willard.) on USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) in 92-93. That ship was also used in some of the scenes.
