the flying scenes are unmatched in this film. i was blown away by the dogfight scenes in dunkirk but top gun maverick really raised the bar. i have so much respect for tom cruise's dedication to do the sequel justice.

I'm not sure why everyone thinks Hangman was Iceman... Hangman was really more Maverick, super cocky, he messes with the instructor at the bar the night before, he is the alert 5/backup aircraft at the end of the movie just like Maverick was, comes in and saves the day at the end just like Maverick did... Also he tries to take on the senior drill instructor 1 on 1 just like Maverick did... His fellow pilots don't trust him just like Maverick's fellow pilots didn't trust him...Hangman is not Iceman, Hangman is Maverick

Another detail would be that when hangman left his wingman to dry during the dogfight at the start of the film, Maverick said something along the lines of "Leaving your wingman, that is strategy I haven't seen in a while". It’s a bigger film an does more… that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s better, but in this case it is a better movie: the first was about a loose cannon jocking with bunch of bros and how that put his real friend in danger, but there wasn’t really a story; Maverick has a lot of stuff going on, but Mitchell’s relationships with aviation, Iceman, Goose, and the Navy are each weightier than the central relationship of the first movie while also not getting too sandbagged with the Star Wars mission

The fact that Miles Teller's Rooster looks like a spitting image of Anthony Edwards' Goose was awesome. I was fortunate to see this movie on IMAX, and it was totally worth it. When I was in the Marines I was stationed on an air wing and got to fly on practically on every single flying contraption owned by the Marines. Watching this bad ass movie on that huge screen blew me away and the whole time I was watching their faces react to the g forces and seeing the condensation on the wings and thinking there’s no waaaayyy this is CGI. It’s too real! Glad to see that it was indeed very real! Totally worth it and I’m going to go back and watch it again in IMAX. This is first movie in a long time where I feel like buying it to own.

I think there was more CGI than appeared. It also comes down to definitions -- probably they shot a single F18 multiple times and composited them together, for example. So the F18s weren't computer generated in the sense of a rendered 3D model. On the other hand, much VFX was involved in the final result. I think the SAMs at the end were the most blatant use of CGI.

I watched it last night in a theater with a wrap around screen. (screen on both walls as well as in front of you) In all the aerial sequences, you're sitting in the middle of the action. A way cooler experience than streaming it to your television. I'm so glad they held out for a theater release.

I took it as Hangman was mimicking Maverick. He was the loose cannon ho took the risks. The actor also does his best Tom Cruise impression when we first meet him. An Easter egg I've stumbled on but have yet to see mentioned anywhere is the F-14 bullet count. When Maverick is down to his last rounds at the end of the dog fight in the canyon he has exactly 33 rounds left. The significance being that if this movie had released when intended, it would have been 33 years after the first Top Gun.

An important fact not caught with the hard deck, is that the Hard Deck doesn't represent some illegal altitude you can't fly below. The Hard Deck represents the GROUND in training. You fly below the hard deck, you've crashed. You don't get chewed out later for violating it. You get marked as 'killed yourself like a moron' and move on to the next training mission. Despite all the realism and consulting with the Navy, they don't correct this. I can perfectly believe this was not corrected because it lends consistency between the old movie, and this one.

“It’s time to let go” in this movie I think has more meaning. After listening to Mavericks words after Ice says this to him, you can kinda tell he is telling Mav that it’s time to retire. Mav tells ICE he doesn’t know how, he is who he is, and he is WHAT he is, meaning a pilot, and teaching just isn’t who he is or what he does. There is more to unpack, It was pretty clear after my second viewing.
@vickster5001

Agreed it has multiple meanings - time to let go of the guilt he still feels about goose; time to maybe retire, or become a great teacher; time to let go of the responsibility he’s carrying for protecting rooster to some extent, heck time to also let go of seeming to think he can’t be happy / with penny. Your (tongue-in-cheek) idea that the rest of the movie after the Darkstar is just Maverick's dying vision is interesting. That's actually similar to my interpretation of the motorcycle scenes (in both movies) at 2:50. There's no one around, he's riding on taxiways he couldn't possibly ride on, and he's expressing his joy for his motorcycle and his aircraft. I see those scenes as fantasy scenes in Maverick's head, or even just artistic (but not literal) depictions of what Maverick lives for. They never actually occurred in the narrative of the movies. No other scene depends on them and they don't affect any other character.

Nice video - well done. One additional easter egg...At the very end of the video Maverick is seen working on his million dollar P-51 Mustang (on a captain's salary). To the left of the plane is the nose of a sleek, British racing green sports car. Remember the opening scene of Ford v Ferrari in which Carrol Shelby (Matt Damon) catches on fire in the pits and then goes on to win the 1959 24 Hours of LeMans? Yeah, Cruise doesn't just own a Mustang, he also owns the actual $20 million Aston Martin that Shelby won that race with and managed to sneak both his trophy plane and car into the movie. COOL

I never thought about Miles Teller looking like Goose, until I saw him with a mustache. I think Top Gun Maverick was better than Top Gun. I wasn't expecting that, going in.

Not a call back, but can we appreciate the absolute best use of the 1 allowed F-Bomb in a PG-13 movie? Right up there with Wolverine in X-Men: First class. Also "86" in restaurant/bar speak is literally "remove something".

86'd means you're out of something. It's a restaurant term. Example: Ranch dressing is gone... It's 86'd. Funny coincidence though

Did nobody notice how when tom is racing the jet on his motorcycle in the origonal movie the plane is taking off showing how his journey at top gun is beginning where as in top gun maverick the jet is landing showing that his journey at top gun is ending. Idk i just thought that was cool

Few scenes that were really good (not in particular order): (1) Iceman and Maverick reunion (2) The Su-57 dodging Mav's missile (3) Rear view of every take-off from the cockpit (4) Mav's fly-by between the F-18s and many more... Oh and yes! Watched in IMAX screen, wouldn't have settled for less no matter what...

You got so many of the callbacks! I'm admittedly obsessed with the original, watched it literally 100+ times (that's not hyperbole). There were a couple other lines that were repeated from the original but I have to watch this again to write them all down. #2 of 100+ coming soon ;)

Noticed that Maverick, the main character/protagonist saved Ice which was sort of the bully character for the original top gun. In the top gun maverick, hangman, the bully thingy character was the one that saved the protagonist/s.

this is one of those few aerial combats films which do not create confusion for the viewers to follow what is happening in the air. We knew at all points what was happening and where were other pilots etc.

Another subtle detail, when they're chasing the 2nd Sukhoi SU-57 Felon, the last batch of round of guns he used was 33. The gap between the first and second installment was 33 years. (Top Gun Maverick supposedly premiered back in 2019). Simply Awesome.
