Love both of your makes, Rosa! Both colours are beautiful. Great tips and pattern selections. A black velvet blazer would be lovely and could be a wonderful wardrobe staple. Anything you choose to make with the black velvet will be gorgeous.

Hi Rosa! I've made the Martha in a stretch velvet (from Goldhawk Road!) with a friend, instead of sizing down we took out the zip in the back and sewed the back seams together and left a keyhole opening at the top under the collar/fastening so it can just slip straight on! It looks amazing in this stretch velvet which is royal blue! I think you should definitely go for a black velvet blazer! That sounds incredible :)

Love your garments, and your tips for working with stretch velvet. I have found a seam roll very handy for pressing the seams, in my case a rolling pin under a towel works really well!

I don't know if you've seen the Grainline Morris jacket pattern? That's a wonderful pattern - I made 2 last year and wear them all the time. It's for wovens really BUT I've seen lots of them made up in ponte - it's unlined, no buttons - just a pull-on. I think that would look fabulous in your stretch velvet - for a dress I love your Deer & Doe the best :) Really helpful tips! I would use clover clips rather than pins myself but I use those most of the time anyway. I just like how they really HOLD and no holes to worry about either. The other thing I've read for wraps is to use clear elastic to hold the wrap part stable. You can pull it just slightly as you're sewing it on so the wrap will sit nice and close to your chest. Just some ideas :) Thank you for another great video!

Thanks for the suggestion Kathleen. I've already selected wide-leg pants pattern and made the Ogden cami - the Morris jacket will be a perfect math I think.

Loved the dresses. With any velvet you should always cut to the nap(the way the fibres lay I.e.: smooth) .The reason for this is ,if you cut against the nap(the way you've cut)when you sit or lean against (e.g. A chair back ) you crush the pile and it will give a marked effect. This is because you'll be pushing against the nap and the light will hit the fibres differently. Also.a pressing cloth should always be a tight weave cotton, preferably white,so you don't get any dye bleed. This is because otherwise you can press the pattern of the weave of your pressing cloth into the fabric, especially with velvet.Another tip is when pressing your seams, inside out, fold another cotton cloth until the height is the same as your seam.you then place the cloth against the seam so ,when you press ,you won't get a seam mark on the right side. You can also instead of pressing the seam just hold your steam iron just above the seam(still inside out) and just shoot a blast of steam.Keep the iron hoovering for a few seconds to allow the heat to set the seam. Many years ago I made many outfits in velvet, including cotton velvet.I made trousers, coats etc.that I had for years without any change in the pile...I love velvet and I hope these tips will be helpful.

Gorgeous makes. I can highly recommend making the Tilly Martha dress in stretch velvet. I did this for my Xmas day dress in a lovely floral stretch velvet and it worked so well and is a stunning dress. I vote for the blazer in the black velvet - think that would look amazing!

Thanks for sharing your beautiful makes and all the tips with us. A black velvet blazer is a total staple imho. I don't think you can go wrong with that. I have a green stretch velvet in my stash that I hope to sew up for the next autumn/winter season. I plan to make the McCalls M7349. It's a stretch dress with raglan sleeves and princess seams so it should go together easy enough and also be easy to grade between sizes - I'm a pear shape, I can always use more volume around the hip. In the fabric requirement, the pattern also accommodates for a nap which sounds promising for stretch velvet.

"I would drape myself in velvet if it was sociably acceptable" (George Constanza, Seinfeld). I loved this! I wanted to make myself a velvelt dress/jumpsuit using the very easy Vogue v9075 pattern for New Years's but I didn't have the time. Next year I will for sure! As for your black velvet, I'm also in love with Purvis' blazer and would love to find a pattern I could hack to maybe recreate it!

I used stretch velour for the first time late last year and thought a walking foot was the way to go! Ha how wrong was I. Once I swapped to a standard foot everything was fine - I made the TATB Agnes top just the basic one in a steel/ silver colour and love it. Thanks for the tips, I have a long evening style dress on my make nine and I have a gold stretch velvet that I plan to use for it 😁😁

Lovely makes and pattern picks. When necessary, you could use a steamer on velvet instead of risking damaging it with an iron. The New Look dress or Tilly dress in your black velvet would be awesome.

Hey lovely, I don't have a cutting table either, but what I've just acquired is a fold-up cardboard cutting mat. It's brilliant and completely stops my fabric from slipping and sliding when I cut on the floor because I can pin drawing pins into it, over the fabric and pattern when cutting. :D Hope this is any help to you as I know what a struggle street it can be to cut fabric on a shiny wooden floor. Your velvet skills are amazing btw. I need to build my confidence with stretch velvet because it is just so beautiful and must be a very satisfying make. Thankyou for your tips! xoxo

Gutted. I made a Nettie dress with low back in stretch velvet recently. Didn't realise till i left the house and got on the bus that it rides up A LOT!! THE DRESS WAS ROUND MY WAIST😣😣 So going to stick to loose fitting outfits from now on. Because tights and tight stretch velvet outfits do not mix:/ FYI

Great video! I love stretch velvet- I like all of your pattern choices and you would look great in any one of them but have you thought about the Tilly and the Buttons Coco dress, maybe with the collar? Not many pattern pieces and could easily be done with the two meters.

Nice new filming setting. What is the color of your wall paint? For sewing on stretch knit, do you think a walking foot would be helpful? Would you explain again attaching the neck band? Did you zigzag the neckline first then attache the band? For your new stretch velvet pattern I like the blazer or slip dress, they are young and fresh looking. However if it were me I'd choose the last dress. I really like flared bottoms, in a dress or a blouse, and I like both neckline versions. With it being cold the high neck and long sleeves would be perfect.

You said you didn’t have room for a cutting mat and I had the same problem. Then I realised that I could fit an A1 cutting mat under my sofa! If you don’t have central legs on the sofa , you could do the same? Then it’s hidden and it will fit as it’s is slim. That is only if your sofa goes down to the floor. Just. A thought.

I really fell in love with stretch velvet this winter and made a top and a dress. I wolud like to point out something regarding the pile. Because I liked the look of fabric when the pile was turned "the wrong" way I made my top that way. But then when I was wearing it under a coat or anything else, over time everything over it started to travel up my body - the way that pile was smooter....It really isn't fun to wear that top, so I made the dress with pile turned "the right" way. So, has that happened to anyone else?

I had a pair of store bought velvet leggings that made even my heavy winter coat to ride up! too bad, they looked really cool. I think velvet cut in any direction makes anything travel :-(

I was actually going to point that out as well! I made a bodysuit and a dress with the pile going up. I still wear the dress with a very wide and long cardigan on top if needed but it is aggravating. The bodysuit can't really be worn outside though because I wear high waisted skirts and the pile made them slowly ride up until they got stuck under my boobs. Not the best look. The colour looks really deep this way though. And I would say it depends on the length of the pile. Shorter piles will probably not cause as much friction! I also wanted to say, Rosabella I loved your jumpsuit! And I had been waiting to hear more about your little red dress 😊.

Yes! I dont know how to solve it, so as a safe side I’ll only do stuff in velvet that I won’t have to layer - like a party dress. I did a sweatshirt pile down and it is terrible under a coat, even if the coat is lined.

Very interesting! I've heard heard about velvet riding up but presumed it was just say the top itself riding up. Didn't think it would make other things ride up!
