I've removed the plastic under pan cover on my V10 TDI. This help with the Cali heat alot. My heaviest towing was a mini CAT. Excavator with 2 additional buckets. No sweat. I will not disclose the weight. LOL

U have crazy good content for people who are interested in towing especialy with the tdi. If u plan to change the oil and flush the radiator(coolant). It would be rly interesting to see how it would perform after those changes. On that same hill with the same load. Keep it up dude. Most of the times when a diesel engine overheats like that, under heavy load, is because of restricted exhaust system, maybe clogged cats. It needs to let the heat go and if its restricted it will keep a high pressure and high heat on the exhaust manifild/turbos/cats. Get some high flow cats or clean yours. Thats why it jumped when you pushed it and kind of lowered a little when you let off to 55

And yet, it did NOT "Overheat". False advertising. And it got better fuel economy than my Landcruiser 100 series pulling NOTHING. Remarkable. As others have stated, No cruise control, use gears instead of brakes, hopefully with trailer electric brakes and trailer modulator, and then use heater if wanting to accelerate with OVER MAX load from bottom of a BIG hill/mountain. Still it did FANTASTIC. Did NOT overheat. With everything against it and done wrong.

Your video started at the chain up area at the bottom of Parley's. The elevation there is roughly 4600 feet (the Salt Lake airport is 4200 feet). The top of the summit is called Parley's Summit and has an elevation of 7,000 feet and back down on the Park City side to about 6,400 feet. So the climb in the video was about 2,400 feet.

I would not call that overheating to be honest, more like an honest gauge. Looks like around 238F which is warm, but not overheating. Most cars don't activate cooling fans until 225 ( at least the high speed fan). Get yourself a scan gauge to monitor what the computer sees. Most auto parts store have them, plus into the OBD2 port. That was an interesting experiment Josh. Thanks for showing and your good commentary. I’ve just got myself an R50 and moving to that from a 2014 TDiV6 Touareg which tows my 3000kg caravan admirably. Most driving I do is flat terrain so no real challenges. Keen to see how the V10 deals with it. Good stuff listening to your clips.

With my Touareg 2 v8 4.2 FSI (completely different and more powerful engine from the old 4.2) I towed 8000 pounds dual axle cargo trailer from California to Texas. There were several hills like this and I was driving 70-80 everywhere - no overheating at all. The only overheat I saw in my Touareg was on Pikes Peak - no towing just 4 people and full of stuff. And it was drive-train overheat.

Exactly the video I was looking for! I'll be using a TDI Touareg as my daily driver as well as my tow vehicle for my old Nissan for track days. The Nissan only weighs about 2800 lbs so I think it'll be just fine. A coolant flush, some Rotella T6 5w40, and split the trans cooling into it's own cooler instead of having it cycle through the coolant radiator and I think you'll see a drastic drop in temps.

I will be buying a friends 15 Touareg TDI next year and will be towing my camper trailer and UTV/trailer. Certainly won't be that heavy so it's nice to know I'll be well within the zone. I agree.. Oil change often to Amsoil and a coolant flush are in order on a used vehicle. Looking forward to more TDI Touareg videos.

240'F =115'C - really hot coolant - you should check a level or make heater inside in full hi temp

The EGR coolers on the 3.0TDI’s is the main downfall of these. Under higher loads, the EGR cooler dumps super hot coolant into the cooling loop and the system isn’t able to cope causing the temps to go up. My 2014 does the same in similar circumstances.

Apparently it is normal... My V6 tdi Amarok does the same. As soon as the oil temperature rises above 120c the coolant temperature goes up. In the owner manual it also says it is fine. I once had a faulty temperature sensor on my v6 tdi Touareg so the car though it was overheating. First the ac shutdown, then alarms (one in the dash and another one somewhere in the rear of the car) and flashing lights and limp mode. If it overheats you'll know.

Okay, video ended before the car overheated. Maybe I don't have the full video available, but in everything I saw the temperature remained well below the red zone in which it starts to get risky. If you tow a lot in this, user 10w-40 or 15w-50

You are off on the math, 2500 lbs trailer + 6,000 lbs. V8 Treg = 8,500 lbs. (800+ lbs. OVER MAX limit) and then UPHILL on a warm day?

How much mpg when towing on regular roads

Hello what about a bit oldee ones like the 2011-2014 ? I am thinking of towing a travel trailer with it , my problem is my trailer is a bit longer. Roughly 27'. And 5200 lbs. I'm worried this is too much for the midsized suv

I think you have an issue somewhere. I tow a Takeuchi 3 ton mini digger daily with my v10 over some of the steepest hills in Ireland and the oil and coolant temps barely move. Although mine is 2004 so pre DPF.

Curious if you had oem tow module...it changes alot of thr engine cooling parameters. If you just put an after market harness on you won't have that.

Have you tested the V8 Touareg on the same hill pulling the TDI? I'd like to see if the V8 would have the same heating issues. I love the Touareg TDI BTW, my dream vehicle.

V6 diesel or v10?

I have 2013 Touareg TDI with the CNRB engine where they updated the EGR cooler, cooling system, and oil systems. Sadly it suffers from the same problem as yours when towing 8000lbs at high elevation (6000ft+). I thinking it has to do with the EGR dumping a lot more of exhaust gasses into the intake at high elevation to keep the "polar bear protection system" found in the exhaust from clogging up, which makes the intake temp way too high and starts bringing EGTs to metal melting temps. I live in Northern California, and can't really emissions delete my Touareg so I'm stuck just slowing down and taking it easy up the grades at high elevations. It would be great to see what difference deleting the emissions would have on towing at high elevation. (besides having more power!!!)

Was thinking about getting a truck gmc 2500 to tow other vehicles or trucks. But I think I'm going to go with a v8 touraeg, I live in Florida so I'm sure it won't have any problem towing anything.

You need a V10 for a comparison.

dont have opportunity but wish to try something like that with my V6 , maybe can do it even 70mph with very high rpm in 3rd or 4th gear . who knows HP VS TORQUE :)

Not good, this thing could easily fail under that kind of load. According to the car it was only 75 out and the coolant was running as high as 240, which is the highest I would ever want to see. It was climbing quickly before you backed off too. Add another 30 degrees to that for a 100+ degree day (or more if someone was pushing it harder) and the coolant would be up to 270+ degrees and boiling over and you would be stranded and likely have serious engine damage if you didn't stop quickly. As other have said, shutting off the AC and turning the heat on goes a long way towards keeping the engine cool, but this should not be necessary on any correctly designed vehicle presuming it is in decent condition and operating within its limits.

I guarantee its because of the emissions crap, and these vehicles don't have the huge heavy duty radiators that diesel pickups have.

It's not overheating, just the way it is. Maybe a coolant change would help, but I doubt it. I have a 2013 Touareg TDI, tow a toy hauler at 5600 pounds, full summer heat (92°F around here) and even up steep grades the coolant temp never goes above 220°F, and drops right back to 210°F when back on the flat.

Hard to see but looks like exhaust tips are black which shows you have a failed DPF. I've seen touaregs pull over their weight limit without a hiccup up steep inclines. This vehicle needs maintenance.

Very nice video! Seems Touareg its not that powerfull climbing! Maybe the 3.0 V6 tdi its better for the job! I usually tow a forklift in my trailer, making a set of 5.500kg. On a Nissan Cabstar 2017 150hp I cruise at 95km/h, but good hills speed goes down to 80km/h. I was expecting lot better in this Touareg! Any way this is a very good knowledge Video!
