Just a phone recorded video of me replacing a valve cover gasket for a 2010 Camry.
I also point out in the first few minutes what's necessary to get to the starter if it needs replaced. It's front and center, super easy to access I'd rate getting a starter changed at 2/10. ( amzn.to/2FUxiMB is a link to an Amazon starter).
To change the valve cover gasket you only need a few things, a 10mm socket (amzn.to/2tPVZXy) with an extension (amzn.to/2Nj5LIE), a flat blade screwdriver or butterknife, some degreaser, and the new gasket (amzn.to/35PUupr).
There are about 15 bolts on top that need removed, although I'm recalling the number from memory. Also take off most the wiring harness connectors, to give the top wiring harness slack to move out of the way. The 10mm under the air intake that is on the side of the engine is the most hidden 10mm you need to worry about, although there are also 2 10mm grounds next to the exhaust oxygen sensor and it's connector and some harness hold downs on top of the transmission you need to open up.
Once you refit the new gasket, the torque specs of the 10mm bolts re 96 inch pounds, or 8 foot pounds. Tighten in a outside moving in X pattern. Near the end of the video I grumble about having to take the intake apart to put the ignition coil grommets on, I don't they fit between the spark plug oil seal and the ignition coil. They are a rubber bumper/buffer held on by the clips on the ignition coils. I meant to show me putting everything back together, but I was in a time crunch, sorry!
Overall I'd rate the repair at a 3/10, takes a little finagling but not overly hard. Don't drop anything into the open valves/chain and you should be golden.

Bro, thank you so much for this video. I tore into this job on my 14 SE after watching some older Camry videos and thought the job would be very easy. Boy was I wrong. Finally, I found your video and was confirmed that I wasn’t missing something and this was a bigger job than I thought. Either way, I got’er done and your video helped so much. Thank you.

If you read toyota tsb-0041-13 (for vvti rattle issue) it tells you to apply a light coat of engine oil to the 3 new gaskets when you install them (the vvti o-rings and oil hole gasket) No mention of using rtv or anything else. The tsb also states 9 ft pounds for the valve cover bolts and shows the correct pattern to tighten them down.

Very helpful but my biggest pain is removing the harness mounted on the drivers side. Watched 3 videos and no one showed that part.

Those VVT Solenoid O-rings don't require any kind of RTV-Gasket/Silicone on them. They are made to seal against the under side of the valve cover like the originals were. Please don't put RTV-Gasket/Silicone on O-ring seals. When that stuff hardens if a piece breaks off it'll get sucked into the oiling system, most likely the VVT ports they're next to and the VVT solenoid will be damaged and become non-operational. If you're lucky you won't trash the camshaft. The RTV-Gasket/Silicone on the edge of the head where the valve cover seal sits is correct though.

I haven't heard this being a problem, but doesn't mean it can't be. I did clean up most of the gasket material as I was mostly using it to keep the pre-formed gaskets stuck but I'll remember that for next time. Thanks!
@patrickthomas6170

I worried about them sticking also . I used dielectric silicone grease on one side to make them stick . Silicone won’t swell rubber gaskets. I also did two trials of putting on the cover before RTV and each time all the O rings stayed put.

Just did mine, 2012 Camry. Have to say, the hardest part is disconnecting and moving the wires away. In the end I just had my dad hold the wires up while I slid the cover back in. Other than that, it was pretty simple and straight-forward. You video definitely helped me in knowing which bolts to take out, I usually took out more than needed whenever I did work like these. Overall, I am satisfied with how it turned out, only need to check if it has any leaks going forward.

great video but let me add a few things blue silicone belongs on old 70's and 80's american cars use the permatex ultra grey on a toyota/honda also felpro gaskets are not that great this is one time i would rather pay the $5 more and buy a dealer gasket
@Crasoum
@Crasoum 2 жыл бұрын
It was a blue multipurpose RTV. I feel you, but for a valve cover it just needs to resist some oil and air pressure. The gaskets were what were available the day I did this, dealer parts are always a great purchase when you want to be sure of fit and fitment, but sometimes you just need to knock out the job. Hasn't leaked since, but it's only been a year.

Do you know if this would be the same steps for a 2013 highlander with 4cyl 1arfe engine, they both seem to be the similar with all the harnesses that sit on top. How long did this take you from start to finish?
@Crasoum
@Crasoum 3 жыл бұрын
I believe the highlander has more displacement and is a 1AR-FE and this Camry is a 2AF-RE but the steps are likely the same, if not they should be at least similar, but this is a guess as I'm not an ASE. Start to finish, maybe 2 hours? It'd have taken a whole lot less with someone showing me what to do, and me not recording at the same time. Biggest thing is to not drop things into the open ports, and keep the gasket centered when putting it back on (I cheated and used RTV.)

My valve cover gasket kit doesn't come with the vvt gasket, does it really matter?... Plus I can't find the gasket anywhere to order it separately. Kinda bummed out right now
@Crasoum
@Crasoum 4 жыл бұрын
I honestly couldn't say, as it's entirely subjective as to how pliable the old gaskets are, and what your risk tolerance is. Are you sure the gaskets aren't just under a box flap, or you missed them in the packaging? They aren't big, so they are easy to overlook. parts.toyota.com/showAssembly.aspx?ukey_product=62913342&ukey_assembly=6707297&ukey_make=5775&ukey_model=89476&ukey_driveline=0&ukey_trimlevel=0&modelYear=2010 11159H looks to be the part by the diagram, but the picture is of a generic gasket, so you likely will need to contact a parts counter to be CERTAIN of the right 3-ring gasket. 1115936010, 1115936011, 11159-36011, 111590V020, or 1115936010 should be the part numbers that are cross compatible, I believe.

@@Crasoum I ended up returning it and ordering the felpro kit that comes with all the gaskets. I had a Beck and arnley kit which only had the valve cover gasket and the three gasket for the middle bolts. Was only $10 more so it's not a big deal, plus I trust felpro.

Correction , those black OEM tube gaskets do indeed go in through the top side . I used 24 socket after lubing to get out , push in with fingers after a freezing and silicone grease and final seating with light taps using 30 mm socket. FYI THIS is way different than 2AZ FE videos

@Crasoum
@Crasoum Жыл бұрын
@@moetic6601 I'm going to say it's probably due for plugs, and if you don't go that route you'll have worse fuel efficiency or misfiring if you are unlucky. If you're lucky then yea it'd be fine. The plastic clips I am careful wit on older stuff but if they break, then you need to visit a junkyard for the connectors, or sometimes I guess Dorman has them. Use a flat blade screwdriver and some pliers to remove them, and you should be ok.
