Ditto! My wife and I each have 2006's. I am blown away by the lack of maintenance on these vehicles. I have the higher mileage of the two and I just passed 160,000. I get a dealer oil change every 4K miles, which is probably too much, but oh well. We live in the Colorado Rockies. About all I've changed are tires and wiper blades. Original brakes, spark plugs, traction battery and (get this) 12V battery! On other cars when I lived in the Phoenix area I could get about 2 years on a 12V battery, NEVER more than 10! Hmm, I wonder how long it will last... Cheers to Prius! :)

Thats actual. Miles driven by gallons filled. Im confident if my wife didnt drive my car sometimes i could get over 60 in the summer. To the person who asked if the traction battery will be hurt by driving in EV mode; no it will not. Y'see, the Prius has a bevy of onboard computer processors (ECUs if you will) that govern how the Hybrid Synergy Drive runs, and protects the battery from damage or total depletion. The traction battery is never really fully charged. It operates between 40% and 80% of capacity, or whereabouts, hence the longevity of its design. Ironically, for all the bad things said about this vehicle, it's way more technologically advanced than the average car. Disturbingly, a very large number of people do NOT know this, preferring instead to spout untrue myths about the Prius.

I once filled up my 2009 Prius and checked the air pressure in the tires and drove on A1A, the main road on the coastal islands, from Port St. Lucie, FL to Miami Beach, FL, which is 3 counties to the south and the gas gauge never came off of full! I thought my gas gauge was broken until I tried to get on Interstate 95 to come back home and the gauge started to go down. This car is amazing on gas at slower speeds. In my experience, driving on the freeway at 75 mph is like driving with a high mileage 4 cylinder car. This car has a special high mileage 4 cylinder! I've had issues with the 12v batteries going bad. I had the 12v Hybrid Water Pump go bad that Toyota fixed for me at a ridiculous price and caused me to learn everything I can about this car and fix it myself! Now, I'm in the process of replacing the ABS Actuator which costs a lot right now and is very labor intensive to replace. I'm doing it myself so I will save a lot of money but this is a common problem with these cars and hopefully Toyota will address them in the future!

I actually managed to get the battery to a full 8/8 bars a couple times. I see in the video that you have 7/8, which is close enough. Typically, you'll see it max out at 7/8 before it starts using as much battery as it's generating, by design, but if you cruise in the low 40s (MPH) for a very long time, that 8th green bar will eventually pop up (or if you coast down a very long hill). I've been driving the car for exactly 5 months now, and it's only happened to me twice. It surprised me the first time because I didn't even know if that 8th bar existed. My actual MPG is about 48. On the display it tells me I'm getting 52. After many trials, I've found that the dash is consistently 6 to 8 percent off. People say pulsing with the engine and gliding with the battery gives the best results, but I find that cruising at around 48 MPH without using the cruise control is getting equally good results. Using the battery like this is good for one or two situations (less than a mile, or what you're doing here), but if you abuse it, then the engine has to be on excessively in order to recharge the battery.

You have to go easy on the gas pedal. If you try to accelerated too quickly the gas motor will kick on. Also the battery has to be charged up about 2 bars above the middle. When driving, if you coast for about 5 seconds then barely put your foot on the gas, you can cruise through town in electric mode until the battery drains down to half.

the car is really never going to give you 100 MPG, I have 2014 Prius and is almost imposible...the battery only last so little before it needs to rechrge, so is imposible to only run with the battery. however, the battery helps the engine to make the car run. it seems to me that it is more like a team work between the two to give you around 50MPG, at its best. many factors play here, remember that; the way you drive , the terrain, and even if it is city or freeway , so is a little hard to come up with one real reason to why the car will give you 50 MPG or why not. At the end what matters is that it does gives you a lot more than a regular gas car.

You are correct. I can drive 20 miles in a 2007 without burning gas, but of course it will then start the engine to recharge, or on the next trip it will need to recharge. Too bad the hybrid battery cant be charged with a plug in charger. O know you can add a plug in kit that requires more batteries. But youd think that someone could invent a charger that hooks to the hybrid battery. I know they have chargers for when the battery is out of the vehicle and being serviced.

There is no mode. It's only able to go into electric drive if you let off the gas pedal and lightly press the gas pedal again and you go into electric drive. But there no mode button. So at 38 mph you can go full electric sometimes even a 50 depending on the grade of road and incline. I wish there was a mode button, but those are on the newer models. It takes some getting use to in order to drive in full electric. It's a slight learning curve. Because it's activated by the pressure put on the gas pedal.

There is an EV mode by design, though never implemented outside Japan if I read correctly. One company sells an aftermarket board, however the modification from what I understand only requires some wires and a switch spliced in. Now, in regards to using the EV only mode, reads like isn't a good mode to use due to the battery stress issues. I guess was implemented for quiet exiting or entrance to ones residential neighborhood as well as moving the car in and out of garages. Otherwise, isn't recommended to be used. I however, wonder why there isn't a program to use the EV mode for acceleration to 35mph or maybe 45mph as I read can be used up to 55mph which is a little higher than the gen 3. Seems would overall improve the fuel efficiency of the vehicle when used to get up to speed in highway or freeway driving conditions. Guessing the Prius C design beefed up their CVT winding so to be able to be used more for stop and go conditions. Check out priuschat for info regarding the mod for the gen 2's.

Quick questions for you - I'm asking because I bought myself a 2008 Prius, and never got to test drive these when they were new, so I'm unfamiliar with them a little bit. I noticed in one of your other videos, the battery indicator was green, one bar from the top through your entire 50mph/brief-60mph run, and never dipped to blue, two bars from the top. First question - did you have to drive specifically to build up that much charge, and the battery, if left on cruise control would normally "prefer" -2 bars? Or does it normally maintain the -1 bar charge level? Second question, how many miles do you get if you try to use electric only like this video shows? Mine seems to deplete what I'd estimate to under 2 minutes per bar, if I'm on level surface, traveling around 30mph, steadily. Third question, when you first start out after not driving for more than 8 hours or so, does the battery seem to discharge faster than usual, almost like it's trying to discharge as part of a conditioning routine before it begins normal operation?

You mean before the gasoline engine comes on? I think it varies a bit if your using using the A/C or not. From my understanding, the A/C compressor/clutch is electric, or, at least I'm pretty sure that it's true for the gen 2 Prius', and that will drain the traction battery faster. It also depends on how full the battery is too and the incline and how fast your going. But, I think it's about a mile, maybe, depending on how healthy the traction battery is too.

The top electric-only speed for the Prius is 42mph, at 42mph in all electric mode, MG2 (the drive electric motor) is at 2,470rpm, the gas engine is at 0rpm & MG1 (the motor/generator) is at it's limit of about 6,500rpm, so at speeds above 42mph, the engine will startup to reduce the rpm of MG1. Sometimes at speeds over 42mph though, the engine will spin but not consume any fuel and and the only thing thats providing thrust to the wheels is the electric motor. I call this "super hybrid" mode.

When the Prius speed in under 40 mph it stays in battery mode unless the battery needs to be charged/AC unit is on. or traction battery is old and weak.
@saganandroid4175

That's not really true. 41MPH or higher and yes, the gas engine kicks on. But you're not fully electric very often, even under 40MPH. There's a constant dance between gas and electric modes, with electric mostly being used for slow takeoffs from a stop.

ease up on the gas once u get going, the electric motor will cut out, as will the engine, the screen will reach 99.9 mpg and your not using anything you could get 2-3 miles like that, drive like that all the time and you will get 80-90 mpg without ev mode :)
@Techridr

What exactly is the point? I have the same car with an EV button installed. What you fail to explain is, since you can't plug it in, all that energy you use going full electric needs to be charged by the gas engine, whether the engine is on now, or later with a drained battery. Re-gen is relative and only helps a small bit. The worst part about running in full EV mode on this car is, once depleted, not only do you need to charge while driving, you're only left with about 67 horsepower by the engine to push the car and charge the batteries. When that happens, you'll get no more than about 25mpg, so your tank average is the same if not a bit worse when you run EV mode like this, because the Gas Engine can't run in optimal efficient mode as much. I use EV mode to back out of my driveway silently so the car starts in the street, and I don't make noise. The Prius is quiet anyway, but that extra bit of total silence is nice

Actually, as long as the Atkinson Cycle Engine is warm, and you have a congestion free relatively flat highway ahead of you, it is possible to cruise along using ONLY the engine, at anything between 60mpg and 99mpg. And guess what? During this phase, the traction battery is also being charged. I experience this everyday during my commute. The EV mode best comes in handy for crawling through pockets of traffic congestion. Once on a clear road, the 1.5 litre Atkinson Cycle Engine is entirely capable of running on its own while still sipping fuel, and giving amazing mpg.
@Techridr
@Techridr 9 жыл бұрын
datathunderstorm I'm on my 3rd Prius, and no, you can't simply travel along between 60MPG and 99MPG. You might get instances of that on a downgrade, but overall, 44MPG is a pretty steady average. I'm talking about US Gallons, so you can do your conversion if you're in the UK. You simply can't use a temporary reading to determine a proper MPG figure. After about 160000 miles on my Priuses, I definitely know the car. Also, when you have a mostly depleted battery, the ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) is going to have to run harder to charge the battery if there is no downhill available. During this time, MPG suffers about 10-20% initially and gets better as the battery tops off. To your point about the ICE capable of running on its own, yes. Not only capable, but it mostly does just that. You don't need much power to cruise steadily. If you need to pass, the electric motors help out. EV mode doesn't help with MPG at the end of your fuel tank (even though the Prius doesn't use a tank). I like the EV mode for moving my car around the property if I need to. No sense in starting up the ICE. The take-away point is, you can't create energy from nothing. If you run on EV mode, you will have to charge it by robbing power from the ICE. If you're lucky to be going down a hill, you will get some free energy thanks to gravity. Otherwise, it all evens out in the end. EV mode is fun and useful, but it doesn't save anything.

My 2008 Prius T Spirit mpg average for summer is 66.3mpg (UK) 630 miles to the tank. For winter, the lowest I got is 53mpg.....and that was achieved NOT crawling about slowly, but driving quite spiritedly. As I stated earlier, conditions DO arise where the Prius DOES cruise happily on anything between 60mpg to 99mpg on FLAT terrain. Mine does! Yes, you'll achieve 99mpg going down an incline with the engine running too - this happens everyday on a 3 mile portion of my commute. I've experienced the depleted battery during traffic congestion - and you'll only get the dreadful MPG from the engine running and trying to charge the battery too - IF you're still stuck in traffic. BTW, the MPG is low, because the engine is NOT at optimum operating temps. Once you're moving on a free road, MPG picks up very quickly (as the engine temp rises to optimum), and it also charges the battery too. And yes, during this phase, I HAVE achieved 60mpg or more. I'm only speaking from experience. Could it be that my Prius using 16 inch tyres, and more advanced petrol over here makes a difference? I can also run in EV mode up to 42mph. I've also seen 53mph on EV - engine running, but NOT using fuel - it was bleeding off excess traction battery charge from a full battery.

datathunderstorm I hate that your Imperial gallon is 20% larger than our US gallon. That better explains your numbers. Also, my 2004 Prius will max out at 32mph before the engine must go on.

Have you not mastered the feathering of the pedal to achieve stealth or glide mode? In glide you can maintain 42mph without running the ICE, strictly battery. It must be a level grade and straight road, but still yet.

OKY, 100MPG.but you had to stay under 20mpg to do it. you know thats not practicle on streets. a kid on a bike will get you there faster! On another video a mechanic stated that almost draining the battery, if you do that alot, is very hard on the battery, and they wont last as long as they should. and thats very very expensive to replace! so wheres your savings? for every dolor you save on gas you spend two or three on a differant battery!

Alexander Elerick 1. Diesel stinks 2. Deters bee pollination 3. Loud 4. Annoying(folks run them out of convenience, not efficiency/ "let me leave my engine running because someone told me it uses less gas than restarting it again") 6. Rarely do diesel owners tune their engine properly, plumes of black smoke for just commuting.

Dan Bee yea diesel “stinks” but it smells like heaven to me lol, Not much of a bee guy, i care about the enviroment and all but bees arent my thing. Louder just sounds better in my opinion, but to each their own. Diesels take a while to warm up to proper operating temp. And yes use more fuel when starting, if im running into a gas station to buy a drink i just let it idle. And your wrong on the tuning part, people DO tune them to blow smoke. Blowing smoke isnt the best thing for your engine. My truck dosnt blow much of any smoke if i tired. I think “rolling coal” can be cool but its just excess wear on the engine. So a properly tuned truck will not blow smoke.
@danbee6103
@danbee6103 6 жыл бұрын
Alexander Elerick why would anyone ever tune anything to run so lean while your not even hauling? Youre going use more gas to start than to idle 2-3 minutes, more like an inconvenience, but agree to disagree? The environment is kind of everybody's "thing" btw, unleaded cars do not disrupt the ability of the bee to find pollen, diesel unfortunately does. So many diesels yet most appear to be for cruising, or jollies, must be nice...

Dan Bee diesels for me are a passion i guess you can say. I have nothing aginst hybrid cars. My truck is my daily driver. Im gonna use it to haul my camper eventually and other stuff. The way you get the black smoke is by tuning it and giviving the engine more fuel than it needs the black smoke is just unburnt fuel that dosnt get combusted.
