I have to thank you, Eric, for making these videos. For the second time, something you randomly discussed in one of your videos was the answer to my car problems. Part one of this rusty prius with the rust jacking, I had been having an occasional brake squeal, so I had the wheels off today and decided to do a little brake maintenance myself. Drivers side, rusty pins, relubed, pads fine; passenger side- outside pad was fine, rusty pins again, inside pad- little rock stuck between the squealer and the pad with rust holding it in place, squealer was hitting the rotor, pad was fine. Thanks.

Bleeding my rear brakes, I asked my wife to assist. She was listening to an audio book at the time and I asked her to press down. She floored the accelerator pedal. I hit my head on the frame. I made a trip to the parts house to get a vacuum hand pump. Retired the lovely assistant.

3 weeks ago. My sister in law called me to work on her van. They were down in our area of the woods. She sent me money ahead and I got the parts needed for a complete tune up and brakes front only. Because the local shop in her area said. Pads are good. She said she only needed the rotors only. They pull up and i start the brake rotors only task. I pull the pads. They are heat cracked and rust jacked bad. I tell her. Dont ever go to that local shop ever. Maybe another 100 miles and you would have lost your brakes. Even the back pads we're the same. Mr O because of you. "I can do it" I followed everything you do. I even found the rear brakes calipers pins rusted in place. It seems the last shop just slapped brakes and lube on the pins anywhere. Thank you Mr. O

For pipe protection (or in my case cable protection) I use a short piece of heat-shrink tubing. That way it slides on easily, I can move it to exactly where I want it, then give it quick blast of hot air (or lighter flame) to keep it in the perfect position.

I've mentioned it before, but I can't believe that most people don't use their emergency brake. I live in Texas, so I don't have the issues that SMAR does. Still, I use mine anytime I'm on an incline of any sort. That's just the way I was taught. Back in the day, the parking pawl was pretty puny (so I was told), therefore use the e-brake.
@LeverPhile

@GregTrickey

@@freak3dot I certainly use it then as well. But, I just don't understand if you live somewhere like SMA, in the north, where the salt corrodes everything... why you wouldn't use it all the time just to keep it moving. The one time you NEED it, it's locked up. It's bizarre to me.
@freak3dot
@freak3dot Жыл бұрын
@@GregTrickey It's funny, because when I was a kid, I can remember my parents driving a stick and using it every time they parked. But, nobody ever really taught me to use it regularly with an automatic. I live in Indiana BTW. North enough to worry about road salt and whatnot.

I do believe Rainman Ray has the occasional experience with rust. The source is usually from the north. Every year in late December there is a large migration of Belvedere into South Florida. They are known to travel well below the speed limit. They are often recognized by their unique hair coloration: white, blue, and sometimes bald. They can often be seen grazing at the early dinner buffet. They migrate back north in April.

I never realized that working on a rusty car involve replacing so many more parts and having so many more problems to consider. Down here in South Carolina I hope I never end up with a rusty car. So once they rust a little bit if you take them out of that environment do they keep rusting?
@Mountain-Man-3000
@Mountain-Man-3000 Жыл бұрын
Yes. Yes they do. Once it gets really crusty as the rust flakes off the underlying metal will continue to corrode, but it might be slower. This is why all my cars get oil sprayed underneath as soon as I get them, and then again at least every other year.
