Toyota TUNDRA vs Nissan TITAN - This is the one I'd buy and why

As I’m sure you’ve heard by now the 2022 Toyota Tundra has been redesigned for the first time in 15 long years for the third generation, and there are some major changes with the new model.
In this video I’m going to compare it to the 2022 Nissan Titan both in the spec and tech, but more so in design and then I’m going to let you know which one I would buy and why.
Starting with the powertrain - the 2022 Toyota Tundra will NOT offer a V8 anymore which is a shame, instead it comes with two engine options - a standard or hybrid V6 with the focus being more on gas mileage and luxury than the previous model.
I can see the gas mileage savings being a priority but I’m not so sure about the luxury aspect. The reason being it will drive up the price even for a base model and make it less affordable for people just wanting a regular full-size truck without paying for all the added luxury features.
The standard version develops 389 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque which isn’t bad for a base engine. However the hybrid version comes with an electric motor hooked up to it and this means you can drive it on pure electric power only at low speeds.
This hybrid combo boosts the power up to 437 horses and 583 pound-feet. Also new for 2022 is the rear suspension, which utilized leaf-springs in the previous generation. This has now been replaced with a more refined coil-spring setup that should improve overall comfort and handling.
Just because the V8 is no more doesn’t mean the new Tundra can’t tow heavy loads. If you opt for the hybrid engine, the Tundra can tow an impressive 12,000 pounds.
Of course, the 2022 Toyota Tundra comes in a TRD Pro trim level and this means it’s fitted with special TRD-tuned springs which gives it an additional 1.1-inch of ground clearance compared to other trims.
In addition, the TRD Pro Tundra also comes with a TRD front anti-roll bar, an aluminium front skid plate, Multi-Terrain Select, Crawl Control, Falken all-terrain tires, an electronic locking rear differential, 2.5-inch diameter Fox dampers and of course unique exterior and interior TRD graphics. The TRD Pro is the one we’re going to use when we jump into Photoshop in a minute.
Some of the new interior options for 2022 are the panoramic sunroof, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a rear sunshade and a digital gauge cluster.
The 2022 Nissan Titan still has the option of a V8 engine for the 2022 model year however that’s also the only option they offer for the Titan. This beast of an engine is a 5.6-liter V8 with 400 horsepower and comes standard in every 2022 Nissan Titan.
If you like power, you’ll love the Titan but if you’re more concerned about fuel economy you might want to look at other options. Unlike the Tundra, four-wheel-drive comes standard on all Titans whereas in the Toyota Tundra you get two-wheel-drive as standard with four-wheel-drive as an option.
You would think since the 2022 Nissan Titan has a bigger engine than the Tundra, it will be able to tow a lot more. Incorrect. With a standard tow hitch receiver, the Titan can only tow 10,880 pounds. Still a lot of weight, but less than the 2022 Toyota Tundra at 12,000 pounds.
The 2022 Nissan Titan didn’t get nearly as many changes as the Tundra did for 2022 and that’s ok because the design language still feels fresh and in line with brand new Nissan models. On the inside, you have a 8.0-inch touchscreen as standard, with 9.0-inch as an option for higher trim levels. Apple CarPlay and Android Audio come standard in every Titan.
Nissan obviously has an equivalent off-road focused trim level to the TRD Pro and it’s called the XD Pro-4X. This trim level adds Bilstein off-road shocks, an electronic locking rear differential, fog lights, unique cloth seats with nice contrast stitching, and the upgraded 9.0-inch touchscreen. This is the version we’re going to compare to the TRD Pro.

Well they're most definitely not going to make it, if anything it's going out of production. They already pulled it out from Canada because no one is buying them. The new titan has been a massive fail. They only sold 22k in 2021. The ridgeline sold 37k for 2021. You know something is wrong when the ridgeline is outselling any truck.
@chiemekaa
@chiemekaa 2 жыл бұрын
@@alexgarcia3900 That is precisely why they're failing. The Titan is competent but without any newer products to distinguish itself from the rest of the class, they're doomed. The Warrior (which actually came out before Ram introduced the Rebel) should have been the way to go, rather they foolishly and catastrophically chose XD.

@@chiemekaa if you read you comment again you said they needed to distinguish themselves and the xd was actually that. Once something fails it's almost impossible to turn it around. @trelee9865

Sad to say but rightfully so, I love my F-150 and I've never once considered a Titan or Tundra, the Titan had an identity crisis between whether it wanted to be a half ton or 3/4 ton, and them dropping the 5.0 Cummins gives me no reason to want one, it was such a unique motor. The outgoing Tundra is old but I see the appeal, traditional truck recipe and a tried and true motor, but the new one is simply over styled for my taste and I don't think a lot of truck buyers are going to like their decision to move upscale and ditch the V8. The truth is, the big 3 are just more competitive, they update they're trucks so often to stay at the front of the pack and they give customers more options on power trains and trim levels.

I'm in a 2019 Frontier, but am considering a newer full-size truck and the Titan is currently on top of my list. Yes the GM trucks look great and get better fuel economy, but as I understand it their tranny's won't go much past 150K (and very possibly less), so again the Nissan has my vote. It'll likely be my fourth Nissan in the last 40+ years and no serious issues before 225K on any of the earlier 2. And I really like the looks of the 2023 Titan. As to the Tundra........................I'm not buying a 6 cycler high output engine. IMO it'll be asking for trouble. Again IMO there's no replacement for displacement.

First time seeing your video, pretty cool man. I would like to let you know the photo you were comparing and drawing on, is not the XD version of the Titan. It is the non-XD version. So for Titan the XD is geared towards better towing because of the reinforced frame. The non-XD version (smaller) is geared towards daily driving/ smaller towing like a boat. Both versions can have the offroad package. Also all offroad pro-4x has every safety feature standard. So 360 camera, smart cruise control. Etc. The only things you can pay more for as far as levels of Pro-4x, is the 2nd level has heated seats. The 3rd level(top level) will have cooled seats and panoramic sunroof. So I guess you need to redraw with the real Nissan Titan XD. The Nissan Titan XD is taller and longer than the non-XD. So maybe change your title to non-XD Nissan Titan comparison.

The Overlander crowd are gonna have a heck of a time designing and mounting aftermarket bumpers ,winches and accessory lights. But I do appreciate the technological advances engine and suspension wise. But aesthetically I prefer the sportier lines of the previous model. I'll just have to keep rolling along in my '94 Pre-Taco 4x4.

I waiting on the 2023 Titan to see if they improve the truck. 1. Improve towing to around 11k lbs any more buy a HD. 2. Option a twin turbo six with 400 hp and gobs of torque. Keep the V8. 3. Follow Ford and go with aluminum. 4. Multi link rear suspension. It’s been proven on the RAM’s. 5. Offer an EV. Tundra 1. Front tow hooks. Farmers, construction workers and so forth need them more than you think. 2. Put in an aggressive tread in the bed 3. Multi use tailgate 4. Love it or hate styling IDK. Nissan has stepped up the SUV’s and the frontier. Put some thought and engineering marvels in the Titan. There are in last place for a reason.

My 2017 Titan has a lot of aluminum panels, they just don't seem to advertise them. They make the Titan XD that tows 12000+ pounds, it also has a heavier frame. My favorite thing about the Titan is that they don't have the stupid autostop on the engine and they don't mess around with all of the hybrid garbage. I still get 24 MPG on the highway and I have the old 7-speed transmission and not the new 9-speed. As far as suspension, the leaf springs work well and it has a pretty smooth suspension, coil overs would just make it squat more when towing. I can see Nissan making a V6TT version, since they have been known for doing that in the past, but I would rather they just supercharge the V8, not that I feel it needs any more power, since it breaks my tires free all the time already.

I still have my 2004 Titan. I bought a 2017 Tundra Pro with double cab to replace it. The ride was horrible, the seats were hard as wood in the Tundra, then me and my buddy drag raced them across and empty parking lot one day. The 2004 Titan kicked my Tundra's ass. I was pissed. I mean pissed. My buddy couldn't stop laughing at me when he saw my face. Unloaded the Pro for a profit over what I bought it earlier this year. Took the money I made off the Tundra added some more to it then put new suspension on the Titan, new radiator, new transmission and haven't looked back since. its paid for and my insurance is dirt cheap. 166,000 miles and I've not touched a single thing on the engine, not a single thing, its bullet proof. And if I ever get in an accident with another vehicle, all that heavy steel in the Titan is going to crush whomever I tangle with.

Agree my 2008 Titan Platinum is about to hit 301,000 miles and so far the engine and transmission for me have been bulletproof. Had to replace catalytic converters and radiator but still running strong. Probably going to pass it on to my son next year when he turns 16 but I still enjoy driving it. Usually put a couple hundred miles on it a day for work and will haul more then I should payload wise a couple times a week, over 2000 lbs sometime but always feels stable and brakes well. I might just keep it for myself and see how many more miles this thing will go.

So you are judging both trucks based on body style and design only? Can you review those too?

The Tundra has better backup cameras as far as resolution but both trucks have them. The Titan will feel better when pulling or hauling whatever you got but mpg will be worse. The new Tundra will have suspension that feels more less like a truck and more towards a car while the Titan will drive like an old school nostalgic American truck and suspension is good but more like expected with a 1/2 ton. V-8 on Titan and with a Toyota type transmission is what you get on them now so that’s great news! Toyota is all supercharged V-6 now but the hp will still be high, have good sound just not that iconic V-8.

The issue with your statement is that not enough people have experienced a titan compared to Tundra. This is because of reliability issues that happened years ago before the titan ever came out (2004). I have owned 3 titans and know a bunch of people who have owned titans and like me still own. My 2009 went to 430k miles with only regular maintenance brakes, transmission switches, oil etc. Same with my 2014 XD. Now I own a 2021 XD gas platinum reserve. I just don't ever have problems and I don't know anyone who has had issues with Nissan trucks. Don't know about the cars but anyway with the low sales. I think it is due to the massive issues with their car and SUV iterations in the past with all of the recalls this truck just doesn't sell because of bad brand rap

The Tundra rear bumper is a HUGE fail, not from an asthetic view, but because they removed any step from the corner once the tailgate is lowered. Trucks are for working out of, for hauling toys that need to be tied down... if you can't climb into the bed, what damned good is it? If the Tundra was perfect in every other way, I still wouldn't buy it for that reason, or be forced to buy an aftermarket bumper (or corner drop down steps) so that I can climb into the back. That is the triumph of Chevy and Ford, building steps into the tailgate itself for access. Anyone actually using a truck for more than a fashion statement knows how important this is.

I enjoy your design interpretations. I’m not sure if you acknowledged that the 2022 Tundra is 4.9” longer in overall body length than the Titan. The 2022 Tundra is 4.5” longer than the 2021 Tundra. The added length comes with zero added functionality. Interior cab space is the same or slightly less and the interior usable bed length is the same. Turning radius curb-to-curb is 44’ on the 2021 Tundra. I have not seen the 2022 specs for turning radius curb-to-curb, wall-to-wall, approach or departure angles. I’m guessing that all have suffered with the new design. The underbite on the front and the thickening of the tail gate (again with no added functionality) both contribute to the increased length. If you look at the exposed chassis and mechanics without the sheetmetal/plastics, cab or bed you can see the frame rails stop at approximately the same location as the intercooler radiators with are mounted high in the grill area. If these were mounted lower that might explain the protruding lower front bumper and facia. But they don’t. I’m interested in seeing what the aftermarket (SEMA 2021) does to the new 2022 in terms of new front bumpers (with and without winches) and new rear bumpers. The lack or recovery points may seen like nit picking but even the folks who use their truck 99 percent on-highway will come appreciate recovery points if they ever slide into a ditch while making a run to the mountains to go skiing. I like the overall design of the 2022. I just think that if Toyota would have retained the length and turning radius specs (maybe they did) of the 2021 Tundra, the new truck might have looked better (to your points) AND be (possibly) more functional on and off road. As it is… I think the front and rear design on the 2022 Tundra would fit more on a Sequoia and Sequoia XL competing against GM and Ford large SUVs. Cheers

My opinion: to preface, I'm a Ford guy through and through and my 2013 is one of the best looking trucks even over a decade later imo. The Titan's headlights are too soft and basic and don't look aggressive enough but all in all it has the recipe for a truck, whereas the Tundra's front bumper is too bulbous, I dislike the symmetry of the tail lights from the profile and the rear bumper looks too vertical. The new Tundra design is over styled and it doesn't sit right with me.
