Great message Peter on why we need to pay attention to the details. I can see how important it is to use patience and not assume anything such as the Prius would need a new battery. It was a great lesson showing us how to keep the cooling/venting area clean to prevent over heating problems. Thank you again for being such a great Teacher 🌟

You are such a professional - it is a joy to watch you systematically go through a problem. Nice job! This was all avoidable if the owner had not had the dogs back there - the hair and dirt would have been greatly reduced and I suspect the water came from the water bowl spilling.

You have a point about the dog water being a possibility, but I saw another video that showed that the seals around the Prius hatch are notorious for leakage. So I'd lean toward that being the reason.

Wow man thanks for doing this video. I just bought one today that was thought to have needed a new hybrid battery. I brought it home and erased the codes and this was the only code left. As I was doing this, I noticed that the hybrid fan was staying on! My theory is that the battery computer senses an overheat and stops power coming into the battery. Good job my friend!

Would cutting out a piece of filter foam to put behind the inlet grate restrict air flow over the battery too much ? I just went to look at an '05 on a lot in Louisiana. I went on a test drive and it was very sluggish, then I noticed all the error lights on the dash. When we got back to the lot it had turned out it had a P0A80 and P3022. It's August, the car is black and I don't think anyone has been driving the car for the few weeks it has been on the lot. The dealer claims the hybrid battery is new... I wonder how much longer Prius batteries would last with liquid cooling.

The Prius can't tell you what block is overheating, pa080 means one block has high low voltage greater less than .030 volts difference compared to other 13 blocks. So fixing dirty fan did nothing. Vehicle has at least one bad battery module. You know how I know it's impossible for it to know about a high block trmp, there are 14 blocks of 2 batteries, and only 3 temperature sensors.

So what was the final prognosis? Were you able to save the customer from having to replace the battery pack?
@ccacace14 жыл бұрын
At around 1:36 he says blocks 16 and 15 are weak. He also said he test drove the car and could not duplicate the problem. The hybrid battery overall is OK. P0A80 is for battery overheating and you saw the reason why - clogged cooling fan. Bottom line after charging the 12v battery and cleaning the fan, should have resolved the problem as he said for some more time. The whole point of his video was that just because you see the triangle of death and dealers tell you need a new hybrid battery, look at other items first.
@ccacace14 жыл бұрын
correction: blocks 5 and 6. The blocks in the center usually go bad first because they tend not to get as much cooling as the other ones in the ends. Heat is a battery block killer.
@gp9924 жыл бұрын
@@ccacace1 Respectfully, allow me to point out that you dont know what takes place with the car after the fan was cleaned and reinstalled. In your comment you said cleaning the fan "should have repaired the problem" but did it? Fact is we dont actually know. There was no follow up , at least not on camera. Sometimes things don't go the way we think they should have gone. Unless you follow up with a test to whatever fix you make, all you have is an assumption that you fixed the problem. I agree with you on the "bottom line" part of your comment.

I have a misfire on my #2 cylinder and I’ve replaced spark plugs, spark plug wires and 1 coil that causes multiple misfires. I’m reading a faulty fuel injector might cause this? Also have the oil light flashing every now and then even though the oil is full. Is that due to the oil pressure sender ? I have a 01 3.4 tundra, thanks and keep up the great content
@sirsweetness83324 жыл бұрын
Injector and/or compression. Move the plug to a different cylinder and the coil to an even different cylinder than the plug and see if the misfire moves. Remember what cylinder you put the plug in and where you put the coil. If misfire moves to one of these you know you have a bad part. If plugs are old, change all of them. Denso or NGK only on plugs. Denso only on coils. Hope it works out.
@sirsweetness83324 жыл бұрын
I recently had a customer who had 7 different codes in ECU. Several were misfire codes. I replaced all plugs (NGK) and one coil that was badly cracked. After I put it back together I had a blinking check engine light and misfire on a different cylinder than I started with. I took it back apart and labeled coils and moved plug and coil to different cylinders. Back together and no codes!!! Vehicle has over 1,000 miles since repair and customer is very happy with smooth running vehicle. They text me 3 times since to tell me how good it is running. Did some other repairs. Intake gasket, found large vacuum leak, injector, 1 oxygen sensor (customer didn’t want to replace all of them. 143K on vehicle) and general sensor cleaning.

I bought all new Denso spark plugs, and the coil was put in not too long ago. Not 100% sure if it’s Denso though. I switched coils several times, that’s how I determined it was 1 coil giving me multiple misfires. But I still have the one on cylinder 2. I’ll get a stethoscope and listen to the injectors. I’ll try a compression/ leak down after most likely, thanks for the reply!

I had a similar problem on the first car I bought. A 1967 VW Bug I bought at a garage sale in 1985. Driving up to the top of a hill about 2000 feet at the top it seemed like I lost half my horse power and it seemed hot. When I took the engine out changing the clutch plate and main bearing oil seal behind the flywheel I noticed the cooling squirrel fan in the shroud had some plastic bags in it obstructing most of it. It is supposed to have a grill over it preventing bags and things from getting in but that was missing. So that fixed that and I knew to reach into the squirrel fan now and then and make sure there was no plastic bags or anything sucked in.

@wim01044 жыл бұрын
the problem is the engine design to meet crazy MPG criteria. we'll all have to swap to hybrids :-/ also, do make sure you have the correct engine oil in there: it greatly reduced the oil consumption in my 2011 Outback, but it took 3 oil changes (every 3000 miles). Now she can do 5000 miles fine (driven normally, no towing or drag racing). I use the Subaru branded oil that was designed together with the engine. So carefully check exactly what brand & spec your engine needs. I still burn half a quart over 5000 miles.

There are 28 cells in the main battery which should be over 7.2 volts each, If one or more are less they can be purchased/ replaced...That is causing the red triangle,,,,It cannot detect a dirty fan, but does detect the cell problem. I know because have recently repaired mine with youtube research.
@meeder784 жыл бұрын
It doesn't detect a bad fan itself but it does detect the effect of a bad fan, overheating. The red triangle can also be tripped if the battery overheats. The red triangle of death is a global warning for the hybrid system which can have more than one cause.

A removable screen should be installed as standard. Pull it out and wipe it off occasionally. Every oil change would be a proper service interval. This is just a bad design or is it planned obsolescence as when the battery is damaged many times it totals the Prius. 😠
@kens97sto1713 жыл бұрын
The problem with a removable screen is that it obstructs the airflow and rather significant amount of air blows through that. I would say if you have dogs it's probably a good idea but then the problem is people don't do the regular maintenance period and you end up with even worse situation with that screen being clogged up and the fan not being able to draw any air . You would be surprised how effective that fan is even when it's obstructed. Mine did not have hair in it but it had dust and dirt probably 50% of the fin spacing was occluded and yet it's still cooled perfectly fine and I live in 105 to 110 fahrenheit temperatures in the summer. The dog fur definitely makes this worse there's no doubt. It would be relatively easy if you had dogs to simply pull away the front of that vent and wrap some screening around the air intake duct. Just to let you know I've got a lot of experience with these cars, had the batteries apart completely disassembled new modules put in on my friends 2006. My 2008 has 343,000 mi on it still rolling on the original battery pack.
