I want to say up-front that I don't think this old route is a very good candidate for reopening as a railway, but there is some potential for recycling it as a greenway. The Bundoran-Ballyshannon segment has rail potential as part of a larger scheme to connect Derry/Londonderry to the rest of the west coast via Sligo. Such a vision was discussed and even approved in the mid nineteenth century, but it did not materialize. The Into The West campaign is lobbying for such a vision to be revisited, and the environmental needs of the modern era make it a much more compelling case.
In any case, any reopening of the route from Ballyshannon to Bundoran Junction would be predicated on the line being reopened from Omagh to Enniskillen, which itself would be predicated on the reopening of Portadown-Dungannon-Omagh-Derry.
