The usual suspects for traditional comic book inking, caveman inking weapons (if you will). =[]
Don’t get all huffy-puffy if you don’t see your favorites here.

Thanks Sandra for releasing these videos! I've learned so much from watching you ink and how to use the tools. These videos go so much further than the the inking section of "How to Draw the Marvel Way". What a great gift! Have a wonderful day! 🌊🤙🎨

I spent a while collecting different inking tools over the past two-three years while learning fundamentals so I have some favorites now outside of these basic categories(which are all great - dip pens in particular are very cost effective for the vast nib variety you can get). I'm still figuring out precisely what I want out of the ink itself and I'm inking my own pencils, so I often stray into stuff that is less well-behaved or permanent. Here are my reviews 😅 Pilot's entry-level fountain pens(Kakuno and Metropolitan) and Namiki ink cartridges are really good at getting some of the textures of a crowquill but with a bit less carving the page and managing ink levels, and a bit more ability to paint by guiding the liquid, which adds some feathering risk but can ease achieving a solid fill. There are more expensive fountain pens, but Pilot's nibs are of a high quality at all price ranges, so there isn't that much being missed by only collecting the entry level in its different sizes. Pentel, besides having the brush pens, has the Pulaman and Tradio Stylo - which share a unique plastic/felt nib that has some ability to flex, but less than the rubberized brush markers. I go back and forth between thinking the Pulaman is too grungy and sketchy and using it for almost the entire page. It's fun, but it really prefers smooth paper since it'll splatter when it's dragged over texture. The ink has a distinct odor and it will move when washed. I do like gel pens, usually older formulations like Sarasa Clip or Pilot Hi-Tec-C in 0.5 point or less. They're much less controlled than something with a felt or plastic tip so when I use them it's because I really want the feel and texture of ballpoint. What is popular now are "quick-dry" gels like the Uniball 207+ and while I like their lines and they dry enough not to smudge immediately, I've had them smudge after I start erasing. This is apparently because they don't fully dry for many hours, so erasing exposes the wet area.

Thank you for sharing. There are so many options out there, and more pop up on the daily (it feels like). We will never run out of toys. :]]

I know the tree branch line is meant to be a joke but lately I've made three of them with different points and I find them enjoyable for an impressionistic approach.

Hahaha! It's a joke, but also NOT a joke. Right?! Playing/experimenting should never stop.

Great! Glad to be of service. Adam has several fun/helpful videos. Grifhold makes those quill holders, in case you feel like searching.

@@sandrainkmonkeyhope Many thanks! Looks like the Grifhold holders are now a thing of the past, but they are very cool. People seem to be DIYing similar holders out of pin vises and tools like that. Neat.

How does one even get started with inking? I tried it but just end up ruining my drawings it's like there is more pressure when inking than sketching.

Get some tracing paper. That way you can practice multiple techniques on the same drawing and not ruin your pencils.

Tracing paper is good, lightpads are also good(and way cheaper and brighter than they were 20 years ago). Sketching in ink helps train you to respect what your hand is about to do, and also any general drawing exercises that ask you to slow down your pace, e.g. blind contour can be done at a really slow pace and it will teach a lot about handling an inking tool. Comics inkers have more tricks available since they're inking for reproduction, so they can apply white acrylic(either from a bottle like the Deleter White inks, or a Posca pen or gel pen), and they can also take a razor blade to cut out a piece, flip it around to the other side, then tape that back on the back to get a second try. Especially if you take the piece to digital later you have infinite possibilities to fix your errors later, it's just slower than getting it right.

I recommend watching my "what I really think of Jim Lee" video. Hahaha! It takes practice and lots and lots and LOTS of mistakes to become confident. This will be a good topic for a future video. :]]
