Hello Sandra, why do pencilers get so much credit over most inkers? I’ve seen original pages by some pencilers and the inker really made the art shine. But the inker did not get the credit, the pencilers did.

I think another thing that plays into the value is the experience of the artist. Your example of spending 15 minutes is great. Maybe it only took them 15 minutes to do the piece because they have 20 years of experience. It might have taken another artist an hour. You're not just paying for that time, but also the time they have spent improving their skills

@sandrainkmonkeyhope when it comes to collectors I think it involves the same psychology. A collector who bought a more expensive work than a later one will feel duped. Also, in terms of the market, if the original artist marks his work down, the market usually follows. This is bad for a collector who wants to sell after spending a fortune, for example. But I'm ignorant of the comic book industry.

Hi Sandra, is the penciller compensated for work inkers sell and do most comic book artist have formal legal agreements in place with collaborators. With prices in the high end peaking; Jm Lee reportedy charging 40K for commissions and an auction price of 7.5 million currently being asked for an original comic page, I guess the old handshake approach no longer works

I only sell the art I own. The penciler will spit 2/3 to 1/2 (penciler to inker) of the original art for a project. This is the case for inks over original pencils. We either split the art, or spit the money if we sell together.

Artists have every right to sell their art for whatever price tag they want. Their sales shouldn't cater to my budget. But yes, a polite request has almost never hurt. The worst I've gotten is something along the lines if I'm not selling at the momentn

So pretty much a judgment call on how to best approach a drawing with a lot happening and tracing feels like a good backbone to being as true to the rendition, and if actually inking it, it would help to get the best interpretation possible without violating the artist's rendition of the work. If you see how someone like Joe Madureira did hair on the arms, for example, Tim Townsend would render the hair much differently but would keep the art as true as possible to Joe's work.

Tracing mechanically is sort of like machine translation in language. An expert translator doesn't just translate literal word for word. Instead, they try to grasp the flow along with the intention of the original writer. In language translation there is also a judgment in how far to lean toward literalness and style, which is entirely up to the translator. There are many ways to be right. So it is with the inker.

Don't sell, and don't RETIRE! Seriously, if you retire, it will be a loss to the industry, but I understand as we are all in different places in our life. Traditional pencil and ink work is an art form that's slowly going away. There is nothing like seeing physical artwork in person which is why I buy original pieces when I can. Fortunate enough to own a piece you worked on with Jim Lee. Blessings to you, your career, and your family.

I spent a while collecting different inking tools over the past two-three years while learning fundamentals so I have some favorites now outside of these basic categories(which are all great - dip pens in particular are very cost effective for the vast nib variety you can get). I'm still figuring out precisely what I want out of the ink itself and I'm inking my own pencils, so I often stray into stuff that is less well-behaved or permanent. Here are my reviews 😅 Pilot's entry-level fountain pens(Kakuno and Metropolitan) and Namiki ink cartridges are really good at getting some of the textures of a crowquill but with a bit less carving the page and managing ink levels, and a bit more ability to paint by guiding the liquid, which adds some feathering risk but can ease achieving a solid fill. There are more expensive fountain pens, but Pilot's nibs are of a high quality at all price ranges, so there isn't that much being missed by only collecting the entry level in its different sizes. Pentel, besides having the brush pens, has the Pulaman and Tradio Stylo - which share a unique plastic/felt nib that has some ability to flex, but less than the rubberized brush markers. I go back and forth between thinking the Pulaman is too grungy and sketchy and using it for almost the entire page. It's fun, but it really prefers smooth paper since it'll splatter when it's dragged over texture. The ink has a distinct odor and it will move when washed. I do like gel pens, usually older formulations like Sarasa Clip or Pilot Hi-Tec-C in 0.5 point or less. They're much less controlled than something with a felt or plastic tip so when I use them it's because I really want the feel and texture of ballpoint. What is popular now are "quick-dry" gels like the Uniball 207+ and while I like their lines and they dry enough not to smudge immediately, I've had them smudge after I start erasing. This is apparently because they don't fully dry for many hours, so erasing exposes the wet area.

@JH-pe3ro

Tracing paper is good, lightpads are also good(and way cheaper and brighter than they were 20 years ago). Sketching in ink helps train you to respect what your hand is about to do, and also any general drawing exercises that ask you to slow down your pace, e.g. blind contour can be done at a really slow pace and it will teach a lot about handling an inking tool. Comics inkers have more tricks available since they're inking for reproduction, so they can apply white acrylic(either from a bottle like the Deleter White inks, or a Posca pen or gel pen), and they can also take a razor blade to cut out a piece, flip it around to the other side, then tape that back on the back to get a second try. Especially if you take the piece to digital later you have infinite possibilities to fix your errors later, it's just slower than getting it right.
