... is the hand that rules the world. Behind a beautiful face, beneath a dangerous smile, lies a revenge that can't be stopped. Trust is her weapon. Innocence her opportunity. Revenge her only desire. Their innocence is her opportunity. Their trust is her weapon. And their destruction, her triumph.

From my Criminology reading: "After the release of this movie, a rash of parents approached the police to have their nannies security checked. subsequent television shows have aired disturbing videos of nannies surreptitiously captured in the act of hitting children. This newly crystallized fear was turned into financial profit with the development of the 'nanny cam' : miniature cameras placed in household objects such as lamps, digital clocks, stereos and smoke detectors. The trailer doesn't do it justice. It's a masterpiece. And Rebecca De Mornay was an incredible villain. If you compare it to the same writer's other psychological thriller Eye for an Eye it really is a classic.

@@earthien not enough. When you have someone like Gwineth Paltrow winning a best actress academy award for something so light as thin foil of paper, and then you have a rich, complex and very strong performance like de Mornay in this picture not even being nominated it feels inglorious

@@goncalogalveias6672 I agree with you regarding Gwyneth Paltrow. To be fair, that was the one year where I couldn't pick a clear favorite for Best Actress. None of them spoke to me, performance-wise. (Hell, all my picks were off that year in the acting categories.) Gwyneth just got lucky.

And to think we never would’ve had her in this if she had gotten the part of Tink that she wanted to play in Hook. As I’ve watched her career I think she turned to darker roles as it seemed harder to get nicer roles, she even had actually auditioned for Claire not Peyton. The blue eyes and the intense lightning focus, it can look very sinister without even trying, and I mean it’s a gift if you’d love playing that type all the time. She was the surprise villain in a SVU or CI episode and she did it all in a wheelchair.

This was a very intense portrayal of a real life problem in the world today. Demornay is a Great actress. She played her character so well, that I was ready to strangle her myself. I don't believe the Academy gave enough credit to the movie in general, but clearly not enough to her work in particular.

Peyton Flanders-Mott was what I'd call a tragic villian. Her parents died when she was very young, she was probably physically or sexuslly abused as a child, and lacking confidence, married Dr Mott , who as a user and abuser, exploited HER too, by not telling her the truth about his double life. All this unresolved trauma, along with the miscarriage, hysterectomy and loss of home, drove already fragile Peyton to continuous rage

I think this was her way of grieving. Everyone does it differently after their loss but this was deadly and she went insane. I have heard of some women stealing babies or cutting one out of a woman's stomach and try and pass them off as their own and Mott does it differently except she tries to take over the family and have it be her own and trying to kill Claire so she can have her husband and the kids. But I was glad she died at the end.
