Very cool transmission. Everyone will find things to complain about, but this is by far more technologically advanced that previous transmissions and can handle much more power. It will last longer than transmissions that have come before it too. It's insane how efficient they are as well. Proven through TFL Truck's dyno test with an f250 showing less than a 15% drive train loss. Insane number!

The fact that someone had to design every single piece of this is actually an achievement that most people dont even think about or even comprehend that 10 years ago this wasnt commercially viable and 20 years ago this was in the realm of "I wonder what kind of crazy new shit is on the horizon"... Not to say a good old fashioned 5 speed isnt good but damn...

Don't forget that in the 50's the Hydramatic came out which is still being made and used today. Back then they didn't have computer tools like today, which makes it even more amazing what they did back then. This new transmission still uses the basic design of those early automatics.

I'm familiar with some of the older 3 and 4 speed overdrive gearboxes so this was a visual treat to see where the technology has gone. Let's see.... 1. It's hard to tell but it looks like most of the planetary carriers are aluminum. They are fairly large though, so hopefully they can handle the torque without cracking or galling. 2. Many of the clutch packs have cushion plates between the steels to soften the shift (I guess the wiz-bang software learning wasn't enough). 3. No center support design. That's an interesting touch and thankfully it comes with ball bearings on the end to carry the extra weight of a larger rotating assembly. This helps keep the transmission relatively short, at the cost of larger diameter. 4. Main drum shell is aluminum but if you look closely, you'll notice the steel clutch plates that ride against it are fairly thick. This was probably an effort to prevent the steels from cutting into the softer aluminum. With no center support or front pump, they had where to take length from to make room for thicker steels. 5. The front oil pump was moved down low to shorten the overall length of the transmission, and make it easier to fit a variable displacement style pump. The variable displacement vane pump is also lined with what is hopefully hardened, wear resistant steel (not riding on any aluminum - don't laugh, I have no doubt they considered that option). 6. The rear pump is driven by a brushless DC motor with integrated inverter (reminds me of tesla's traction motors...heh, or a computer fan). 7. Input shaft has some pretty large holes bored through and I'm guessing it's to handle all the oil that has to flow through it. Lots of clutches and gears to feed. 8. Plastic oil pan...sigh. I guess that's what they call progress. 9. Internal wiring harness that can be replaced as an assembly whenever the external connector breaks (and it will). 10. I'm impressed they still have a mechanical range selector. Overall, not as mechanical complicated as I thought it would be. But when you're doing friction to friction shifting (the cheat-code of slushboxes), you can get away with that. I can also see why they are having so many technical problems with this. I drove an F150 for a while with this transmission and I would say it was ok, but not great.

I have a 2019 Mustang GT with the 10R80. Its been acting funny. cruising at 45mph and its in 10th gear. Go to hit the gas and it wont kick down. I cant tell if it kicked down or not but I literally have to press the accelerator to the floor in order to force it into overdrive. its not everytime that it does this but its becoming more frequent. Random hard shifts from 1st to 2nd gear and 1 time there was a delay going into reverse.

@@southernrailfanning5516 The issue for my 19 GT PP1 with the 10R80 was a half quart of transmission oil. Just ask the dealer if they can check it out for you. It's a known issue and a super easy quick fix and get them to reset the ECU learning on the transmission and try not to drive like that for a week and let the system just learn your normal driving first. The transmission will self learn and adjust. I learned this the hard way having too much fun before I took it in for that oil check and reset. Plenty of forums point this way and I was led in that direction with great success. Also. You need to let the car warm up on cold starts. That especially when I experienced that slow to shift issue 1 to 2. Easy solution. Let her warm and get that oil tapped off.

What’s up with the rear pump electric? rear pumps allowed push starting but what good would that do if it’s electric? Maybe a prelube/soakback pump if so very nice design That main pump is awful small much smaller than a 4l60
@db4z09
@db4z09 3 жыл бұрын
It's for engine auto stop start. The electric pump runs when the engine shuts off to hold the transmission in drive so it's ready to go as soon as the driver lifts off the brake pedal and the engine restarts. The primary pump is engine driven so it shuts off with the engine. Some transmissions use accumulators instead to quickly reapply clutches when the engine restarts but electric pumps are smoother because the clutches never disengage.

@billjenkins1416

The pump is gear driven in the pan. It is the piece that this “genius” had fall out when he pulled the main control, it had the gear with the white plastic shroud on it. Was also humorous he left the start stop pump attached by the feed tube... typical engineers disassembling things they have no idea how to reassemble is what this looked like.

What is up with the whine that these 10r80s make on the f150s when you accelerate you really here it driving through parking lots and places where you have sound bouncing off things or if I'm sitting still let's say warming the truck up and I slightly press the gas it whines could it be the pump does anybody know anything about it? It bugs the shit out of me it sounds so damn stupid but I will say I am overall very disappointed with this trans it seems jerky also seems to shudder a little when I go to speed up I dont know whether it's just how it is or if ford just did not refine this thing enough to pair with their trucks good enough

@karlschauff7989

Vane-style oil pumps tend to make a whine noise. Probably why they went with an off-axis oil pump design. Moving it down into the oil pan might help suppress the noise a bit more than if it were part of the stator assembly.

Get a good tune from somebody like MPT, 5 star, brew city boost, all motor labs, OZ tuning or any other well known Ford F150 tuner and it’ll be night and day. Ford really dropped the ball big time on their tuning of this transmission. Aftermarket tuners, quality ones anyway, fix it. I have a tune from 5 star and my 10R80 shifts like butter now. Plus the stupid 1-3-5 skip shift is gone (you can choose to leave it though if you want).
@Sagittarius-88
@Sagittarius-88 Жыл бұрын
@@cfltitan I'll probably go that route after my transmission gets repaired under warranty. 26,000 on 2020 F150, and it's got a wicked 1-2 slip, as well as erratic shifting. I seriously doubt that's getting fixed with any type of software update, if there's even one available. My guess is a valve body issue, probably requiring replacement. Once that shit gets fixed, I'm getting it tuned. I'm not so much concerned about power as the 5.0 has more than I need, but that factory shift strategy is garbage. I'm not a fan of that 10R80 right now, but maybe a tune will change my mind some.

Well looks like the electrical will get replaced on every rebuild imagine how it will look like at 100,000 plus miles. All those speed sensors solenoids contaminated from friction & steel wear!!! Valve body wear from all that shifting through 10 speeds. Stop & go traffic will be HELL for this transmission. Why not put a gear split option for extra gears like turning a knob for 4x4. I know traveling state to state is nice. But Hawaii we stop & go a lot cool vid tho!!

Lessee, aluminum shells with clutches and steels running directly on aluminum splines. Moving seals running durectly on aluminum surfaces. You don't rebuild this transmission, you throw it away and install a new one. Fortunately, the electronics should allow them to last the life of the vehicle, maybe 250-300k miles. Gotta love modern automobiles; soft, comfortable, every convenience and gadget, and all of it made to be thrown away. Gotta keep the fat bonuses rolling in to the CEO's and make sure the UAW keeps getting their $60/hr, I suppose.

Aluminum transmission cases with steel clutches and shells isn't new. And those transmissions are easily rebuilt over and over again. They only time they're destroyed is when the owner hears strange noises or has strange transmission issues and does nothing about it.

In the 40's you were doing good to get 40K miles (according to my dad who owned a 39 Buick and worked on it himself). In the 60's 100K was considered high milage and 200K was something you bragged about (I was there!). Today 150K is low milage and people think nothing of 300K+. Today cars last longer than ever before, so if they are throw away today, what were they in the good old days?

Wildman .... the modules? The high voltage circuits? What are you referring to? Horses were around for thousands of years before ICE vehicles ... I have never owned a horse . Electric motors are everywhere. Try using your gas powered drill today ... hmmmm .... well I have worked and played with gas powered vehicles for well over 19 years now and they were fun but they are getting dated . I’ve rebuilt engines and transmissions in my day and I still work on my gas vehicles from time to time but they are too expensive to operate ... gas and maintenance on ICE cars are a becoming an expensive case for me for example I have to replace my 3 CAT converters in my SUV 1500 dollars ... my transmission oil is 50 dollars a quart . .... I drive over 60k miles a year . Old people die ... technology evolves ... Ice cars will soon fade with time... but I still appreciate the fun I had with gas chuggers.... and for those idiots who say you can’t modify electric cars ... that’s stupid... high capacity capacitors will be the nitrous of the electric cars not to mention adding more battery modules, reducing weight in body , or changing your final drive.

That’s cute ... the degree is a (EET) electrical also known as an electronic engineering technology degree nice try though . Tesla is a good introduction to the electrical power train ... it is a luxury car company that is helping battery powered vehicles get ahead for larger scale operations... where I have I heard that battery packs are too expensive .... hmmmm oh yea around the early 2000’s from the Prius ... and now you can buy them refurbished ... now where else can you recycle your battery for credit hmmmm oh yea lead acid.... with large ramp up of a product you will achieve lower cost ... and as far as cost of ownership for an ice car I have a combined mileage of around 220 k for two of my vehicles in the past 3 years with gas / oil changes , filters , brake pads, emission bs , belts, it would be around 30k in expenses ... And the expenses will only get worst for my ICE car .... you talk about battery packs being expensive ... have you ever priced a modern engine and transmission from a modern vehicle if those go out and out of warranty? Let’s take another 100k car like a Tesla the drive train on an Nissan GT-R is around 40k for a new motor and trans ... don’t believe me call your local Nissan dealer ... not enough ? I have very common drive train on my Acura ... bare engine components for the engine alone and not even complete engine is around 8 grand alone if your trans goes with it that’s more likely another 4 grand . And that’s just for common 40k car ...full engine and trans is more likely going to run you 15k for parts alone (and don’t give me I can find one in junk yard business since we are talking new here) >>> see for yourself www.acuraoemparts.com/auto-parts/2016/acura/mdx-5-door/tech-trim/9-speed-automatic-engine/engine-cat/engine-assy-transmission-assy-3-5l-2-scat Maybe every one should buy a used trans am with ram air .... bahahhahaha

Battery packs cost more than transmission rebuilds, and they need to be replaced from time to time also. In a few years, costs may come down, but as it stands right now, the savings from less complexity is countered by the higher cost of components.
