For this project we're using a trash metal foundry for metal casting and melting copper. Copper melts at 1984ºF. Does our trash-can foundry get that hot? Testing, testing 1, 2, 3!
This metal foundry project is also great for those wanting to know how to make other cool things: forging aluminum, how to make a metal foundry, DIY metal foundry, melting metal, melting aluminum, melting brass, glass melting, molten metal, homemade foundry experiment, charcoal foundry, DIY smelting furnace, metal furnace, homemade foundry, cool science projects and more! Let us know what cool foundry experiments you create!
If you’re looking to try something new or for an activity such as: DIY metal project, foundry projects, cool science experiments, fun weekend project, or just a fun project with the family, watch the video to learn more.

Hey Grant. A quicker and more accurate way to make ingot molds into the sand is to replace the bottom plank of wood with the under side of the muffin tin when packing the sand in. It leaves a negative so when you pull the pan off it should have the same shape as the inside of the muffin tin.

now that you can melt copper you should try making tumbaga. it's a copper gold alloy that is lighter than the same volume of gold, has a lower melting point and is readily malleable. you can also use acids to remove a surface layer of the copper and leave a nice pure gold finish. Tumbaga was used throughout MesoAmerica. Cheers

I would suggest instead of digging up "molds" with a spoon. Cut out ingot shaped cube of styrofoam. Put it on bottom and cover with sand, flip it and then just pour the molten metal in it. It will melt the foam and you can experiment with different shapes of "ingot molds". Cheers

He used this method in the past actually, but his new way of casting is less wasteful since the styrofoam is a one-use only material, but in controversary he can reuse this sand.

Short answer being, the colder the medium a metal is quenched in the harder the metal becomes all while being more brittle. It's all based on temp and time. So if a metal like iron is quenched in liquid nitrogen it will be harder than the rest, but if you drop it from a decent height it will likely shatter.

@Irishcream216

Richard Phan negative. Magnesium will auto ignite in the presence of oxygen at it's melting point. It must be done under very controlled conditions either in a vacuum or suffocated argon bath. Please do not try to melt magnesium or any other metal for that matter without extensive research.

Oakazz that is extremely dangerous because the liquid copper would evaporate the oven spray resulting in a small pop, which sends molten metal everywhere.

Fun fact there are actually two reasons why pennies are mostly zinc after 1982, The first reason being the government figured out it was cheaper to make them from zinc and plate them with copper and the 2nd being there was a copper shortage in 1982
