This is so funny to watch as a french native speaker, because Garnt is actually god damn right. Almost every word considered hard to spell in this stream actually comes from french or is transparent. So it seemed very easy to me even though I'm not an english native speaker. Out of the 45 words that appeared in this Spelling Bee, 15 came from french, and 24 are transparent. And most of them were right at the end, so the harder ones, like "rendez-vous", "manœuvre", "penchant" or "dénouement".

wtf m8 all scientific words are actually the hard ones and are GREEK
@georgepantzikis7988
@georgepantzikis7988 2 жыл бұрын
@@tecktonalex French words are way harder to spell than Greek ones. The words of Greek origin are generally phonetically consistent in their spelling. You hear the 'sye' sound at the beginning of a word and you know it's spelt 'psy'. Not to mention the fact that, while certain Greek words are very obviously not Saxon, a lot have been integrated into the English language, such that having a silent 'p', for example, doesn't feel weird to write. French words on the other hand are have letters which are never voiced - not even in the French language - and seemingly no set logic. An 'ou' sound can be written 'œu' as in manœuvre, or 'oue' as in denouement. Greek has no such ambiguity.

It's actually rather easy to fuck up mashed potatoes. Here are some of the common mistakes that people do : - Failing to boil the potatoes long enough, which results in a crunchy mash. - Overboiling the potatoes, which ruins the taste of potato. - Peel VS no peel. Many have debated whether one should peel the potatoes at all. Depending on the type of potato and personal preference, peeling is not always necessary. - Under mashing and over mashing of potatoes. Some people like to have some chunks left in the mash. Others prefer the mash to be buttery smooth. It is fairly easy to over-mash the potatoes. - Next we enter the complex realm of adding stuff into the mash. Pure mash potatoes with no spice can be rather bland. Thankfully mash potatoes go well with just about any spice. The trick is to no overdo it. I've had mashed potatoes with too much salt, too much pepper, to much water, milk, butter, sour cream, various herbs, mustard, ketchup and the list goes on and on. Too much spice will easily overpower the subtle flavor of potato and ruin the dish. - And obviously, using anything but actual raw and fresh potatoes as the base for the mash is an automatic fail. Powdered potatoes, potato paste, the frozen pre-mashed potato that comes in a box, all of that stuff is vile, yet some people insist on using it over actual potato, or in conjunction with actual potato, which should be a war crime honestly. And that's just trying to avoid failing to do a passable mash. Perfecting the mash potato is an art form in and of itself that requires years of practice and fine tuning. Even a tiny variation in the balance of spice and added liquid can make the difference between a SSS+ mash and a A- mash. Some people are used to doing it by ear, but for the uninitiated who wishes to reach new heights in the art of the potato mash, measuring cups and scales are a must to achieve that perfect balance.

I'm from the Philippines. I remember the time when we had an Australian exchange student. In English class, we had at least 3 spelling test every week. And this girl came to the teacher and said "I don't need it, I speak the language" The teacher laughed then said the first word- "onomatopoeia". The reaction on that girl's face was priceless when she whispered to me "what the fck is that word?" She got 3 out of 15, while the rest of us got around 11 to 13. Since that day, her attitude towards our class changed. Good for her. Edit: this happened when we were in 2nd year highschool.

The smell of durian is related to how it attracts the animals that pollinate them (bats). Bats don't rely like birds or bees do on visual cues since they're doing this nocturnally. The over-ripe smell of durian tells the bats about the condition of the fruit in terms of ripeness.

As an Italian native speaker and someone who studied Latin, this is damn fun. a lot of the words were easily recognizable to me, and seeing Garnt CRUMBLE before "Antenna" was fun, lmao. Anyway, the reason because some words end with "weird letters" in their plural form is because they were latin words. Antenna comes from Antemna and the plural is Antemnae (which is pronounced uh-teh-m-nah-eh for you english speakers). To answer Connor's question for why some fruits smell so bad: It's an evolutionary trait to deter certain animals/parasites from eating them. Thats also why plants devised spices, its a poison for parasites so they stop eating them. We as humans just evolved to generally like spices[specially in hotter regions] because its how we preserved food. So it was evolutuonary that "You need to be able to eat spice cuz thats how we perserve food."

49:20 to answer the question why there are two spellings for each antennae/antennas and formulae/formulas, it's because both words came from the Latin language, where one of the plural forms is by adding -e at the end of the word, depending on the word's declension and case. So when they came into the English language, one could create the plural form in the English way by adding -s at the end, or in the Latin way by adding the suitable letter(s) or form based on the declension and case. The other info that I wanna share is that you can probably guess on how a word is spelt even if you've never seen it based on the language origin. For instance, words that have "ough" in them are most likely come from the older form of English. Words that have -graph are from the Greek language. So, having the "ough" in a Greek-origin word would be strange, just like the Garnt's case where he spelt it as baroughgraph instead of barograph. English absorbed many words from many languages such as French, Latin, Greek, Arabic, Spanish, etc and this is one of the reasons why English is so fucked up when it comes to spelling.

Connor's query regarding the reason for Durian being smelly is rather intriguing. As a Biology student, I know that peppers have developed capsaicin as a defense against animals for evolutionary purposes ( excluding birds for they do not have any grinding teeth that would damage the seeds). Is there a similar reason for exotic fruits with a repulsive odor?
@rextitan
@rextitan 2 жыл бұрын
wouldn't it be due to all the other plants being eaten and dying? durian is spikey and smells bad so i imagine it gets eaten a lot less in the wild than other plants. It's not that it evolved to smell bad. It's that because it smelled bad it survived better.
@sayantanmazumdar3

@sugarqbs
@sugarqbs 2 жыл бұрын
@@sayantanmazumdar3 Durian smells rotten because it releases sulfur-containing compounds as it ripens. We usually encounter sulfurous compounds from rotting flesh (ew) or animal chemical defenses like skunk spray (less ew but still a useful to avoid) so we steer clear of compounds of that kind but they’re quite effective at attracting decomposes for that exact reason. There are a lot of plants that smell like rot as a way of attracting flies (famously, the Rafflesia and the aptly named Corpse Flower use stench to attract flies as pollinators) though I can’t imagine rhinos or elephants eat a lot of decomposing flesh. The smell is probably just a signal of ripeness to the only animals strong enough to eat it and it just so happens to smell terrible to us; it all seems a bit odd but then again we love chocolate and caffeine and peppers and those are all plants that actively do not want to be eaten so idk nature is weird. -also a biology student btw

Something I learned about my school upbringing with this episode: having taken classes in German, English, French and Latins REALLY fucking helps with the ability to intuitively spell English words. I'd wager "constellation" has 2 L's because of the word "stellar" (or something derived from that) meaning star in latins. Also apparently we read a shitton of words no normal person would ever come across? I think the only ones that I genuinely never saw written were wren and surmised. Also also, the British accents absolutely do not help with spelling, considering Brits love to drop letters while speaking.

@Immor7alBG

A better way to ascertain whether constellation has a double L or not is through the vowel sound before the consonant. The E is short, something that happens when there are 2 or more consonants following it. An opposite example would be the name Steve. the e before V is a prolonged sound. Obviously there are exceptions to this (like with any language and its literacy rules) such as the word manger that Connor had misfortune of having to guess. If I had to guess, it comes from French the same way danger does and for that reason they ignore this grammar rule.
