Cracking the Secret Code of Travel every Thursday.
bit.ly/SoniasTr...
Hi Travelers!
Do know that I do NOT wish for you to spend your vacation time watching TV. But some of you will travel for extended periods of time and a great way to beat feeling homesick is being able to tap into a familiar routine.
More importantly though, using a VPN service is a great way to keep your connection secure and prevent that dreaded identity theft. When we are traveling we are on the road, connecting to public wifi, etc, and boom, that's how people can access your information. Always be weary of public wifi access.
:)
Missing out on your current choice of programing can be tough, especially when you're middle of binging a whole series. Unfortuantely, one of the side effects of traveling is not being able to log into to some of your choice providers. Have no fear though, Sonia's here to save the day with a few ways to get around the system.

Hi S, I will admit I was a little worried when you started off about not being able to enjoy TV programs while traveling abroad. Who watches TV while in Moscow or Rome I asked myself ? Then it dawned om me it was more about obtaining a secure VPN !!! Outstanding on your part in masking your true intent. You are not only brilliant, but also very charming....

What about Hola? It's free, safe, user friendly and works with Android as well as computers.

Tord Ringereide Bergholtz Hi there, from what I undertand, Hola's free service is not as secure and allows other users to access the internet through your computer becasue the service provided is a peer-to-peer network that uses peer-to-peer caching. I'm glad to know that Hola is working for you - just make sure to do your research!

I use Hola with Ghostery, both of which can be downloaded on google chrome that way I can access tv networks without sharing my information on the peer-to-peer network. Its private free and super convinient. I highly recommend it

I did a semester abroad in Europe and had no problems using the Hola extension for Google chrome! It was free and effective, and no one ever accessed the internet through my computer. My only caution while abroad is to be careful on public wifi, particularly in Italy and France! If you are logged into your email address on your computer or phone (even if it's automatic) while using public wifi, you could very well end up with hundreds of foreign spam emails in your spam box. This may seem fine, but it's rather difficult to find the unsubscribe button when you can't understand the language! ;)

TennisKorra There are free VPNs out there, but they're usually less concerned about security and some scan your data to provide targeted ads. If you're just watching TV, that may not be a concern, but if you're using a VPN to protect your privacy or protect your clients' confidentiality, that may be a deal breaker.

If you are in China for a year you will miss TV in your own language. Also VPNs allow access to social media which is blocked in some countries.

When visiting a foreign country, why go thru all this just to watch TV? You can watch TV when you get back. Instead, why not tour the city you are in? Aren't there museums, or sites that would be more interesting that being cooped up in your hotel watching TV? Good grief!

Who in the world is watching TV when on vacation? I barely have enough time to see what I went there for much less hours to sit on my ass watching TV. Is this what people have become. So freaking lazy they need TV while on vacation. Unplug people. You can do this at home.
