What is a treble bleed? What it does and how to install it in a Stratocaster.
One common downside of many modern guitar wiring circuits is the frustration of losing high end frequencies as the volume is decreased resulting in a loss of brightness and a muddy, foggy tone. Thankfully, this is easily fixed by installing a treble pass capacitor (known as the treble bleed mod) into the circuit.
A treble bleed reduces the amount of treble that bleeds to ground allowing the you to lower the volume yet maintain the strong output and clarity.
In this video we install a 0.001uF capacitor with a 150k resistor and install it inside a Stratocaster. A treble bleed circuit uses a small value capacitor and resistor that connects across the volume input and output lugs. Once installed in an active circuit, the capacitor only passes the high end frequencies.

Excellent - I’m installing some new pickups and pots in a strat and wondered what these were about when I looked up the wiring details etc. Like you I quite like the treble to roll off a little with reduced volume, so I won’t be doing the mod, but thanks to you I now know why!

Hi, thank you for simplifying this, great video. I have a Ibanez Jem Jr, when I roll back the volume the tone goes from bright and open to less bright and kinda muddy. Will the treble boost be the right fix for this?

Thanks for the half blender mod step by step. I just finished wiring my strat. It was first time wiring a pickguard from scratch and it came out flawlessly. I want to add a treble bleed along with the 1/4 blend mod. Can I just follow this video exactly?

If we wire the middle pickup and bridge pickup in series visa a switch on a three single coil guitar we get a humbucker but it will sound muddy. If we had a treble bleed cap will it clean it up by retaining the higher frequencies? I am just speculating at this point. Appreciate any help.

Thanks for info. Is all that copper shielding grounded (faraday?) I am doing same and dont really understand it well, should the shielding come into contact with the switch and pots when it's got a ground wire to a screw in the body cavity and copper tabs connect to the pickguard shielding? Should i leave the space under the switch and pots free of shilding so they dont ground that way?? Ta :)

Hello, are the jumpers really necessary to reduce noise? I see that the guitar pickguard is already shielded so having jumpers connecting the pots would just create a loop right thus introducing noise? Thanks in advance! Would just like to clear this one up since I'm going to do some repairs on my guitar :)

Back in the day, when you had high street component shops like, Maplin, Radio Shack, Tandy etc. Those two parts would have cost pennies. They're still pennies individually from mail order suppliers, but you have to buy at least a minimum of 10 of each. Even then, post and packing will exceed the actual cost of the parts.

You more or less install a small jumper loop on the 5 way which connects the neck or middle tone to the bridge. It’s mandatory as far as I’m concerned in a Strat. Nothing changes with the treble bleed once it’s installed. I highly recommend doing both the treble bleed and the bridge tone control. I personally like to control the bridge with the neck tone just because I can then tone blend in position 2 and 4.

Hey there, Does it matter which way you solder the leads? (polarity)
@SixStringSupplies
@SixStringSupplies 6 жыл бұрын
stayawakeclub hiya - doesn’t matter unless your capacitor is polarised. 99% of caps used in guitars aren’t polarised.

@@SixStringSupplies How do I know if it is polarised?
@TinkerToneworks
@TinkerToneworks 8 ай бұрын
@@cptncanelaon polarized components in general, the longer lead is the positive lead (you'd see on an LED the longer leg designates the anode). Specifically for a polarized capacitor like an electrolytic, it will be physically marked on the capacitor itself which side is positive. Regular guitar wiring doesn't use polarized components 99.9% of the time (besides the pickups ofc)

No idea so I'll ask, do it need to be soldered in some special way? I mean if any of the components (Capacitor and resistor) are one way working? I'm pretty sure resistor is not, but not sure bout capacitor.
@TinkerToneworks

these kinds of capacitors and resistors are not polarized, so it doesn't matter which direction you solder them in.

Why spend up to $6 on a Orange drop capacitor (depending on your source) for this application, when a Ceramic disk or Mylar capacitor costing less that 25 cents will do just as well. After all, you're just using it as a high pass filter and using a different cap won't make the slightest bit difference. It's just a simple folks, just buy what you need. Get a 100K - 150K ohm resistor and a .001uF capacitor for your single coil pickup guitar (use a 200k-250K ohm resistor for a guitar with humbuckers). Make your own. It installs as described above and works exactly the same.
