Amazing myths and legends are in abundance in Asian culture. While some of this has been explored through horror and fantasy dramas, none have really taken the reins and created an entire living, breathing world around it. That is, until Trese, a six-episode Filipino gem.
Trese, a smartly written, exciting action romp that blends elements of sci-fi, action, and crime drama, leaves you wanting more even after the credits roll.
Trese is a show set in the heart of Manila that explores a world in which the shadowy underworld coexists with the world as we know it. The daytime is fine, but at night, the shadows come out to play. This loose alliance, which was formed in the past by a man named Anton, is weakening under the weight of restless dark forces.
Alexandra Trese, Anton's daughter, serves as a link between the two worlds. According to legend, she is the sixth child of the sixth child, a girl born to unite the realms and rule over the underworld. For the time being, she's content with her role as an Earthly detective.
Trese's best fantasy-realism crossovers nail the gritty energy and sprawl of Manila, making the anime feel both natural and magical. Humans are kept as pets by dwarfish earth elementals. Lightning elementals own and run power companies, their hands and eyes crackling with raw energy. Encanto horses live in densely forested headquarters perched atop high-rise buildings. Even monsters need an off-grid system to survive in this world, so the predatory aswang monsters have their own wet market for illegal human meat.
The Trese comics are known for their folklore elements in both the series' urban setting and story arcs. Those elements amp up the magical realism vibe in the anime.
Alexandra Trese stands at the center of Trese with the best reaction to the madness of her Manila: moody, sullen, and distrustful. She appears to be what any city-dwelling Filipino feels on a typical day, dressed in a Chinese-cut trench coat and ready to fight at the drop of a centavo. As a supernatural detective who is also the enforcer of the "accords" between the human and supernatural realms, she is a joy to watch.
Trese is engulfed in all manner of supernatural spookiness over the course of these six episodes, from zombie invasions to feral goblins and even a murdered ghost. The ideas are well-presented, imaginative, and the voice cast does an excellent job acting them out.
Trese is a well-written series and one of Netflix's better-animated releases this year. The world is fed by the unique aesthetic and clever use of myths and legends.
Trese definitely deserves a sequel based on this performance, but whether the show does so or not remains to be seen. For the time being, Trese has a solid six-episode run that is well worth watching.

Philippine mythology coincides with our precolonial, colonial, and post-colonial history. That's why there are Catholic and ethnic mythology mixed such as Santelmo Or St. Elmo's fire (whom trese summons when using her phone). This represents our colonial history with Spain. Thr white lady is more post colonial contemporary urban legend.
@ellikasan
@ellikasan 2 жыл бұрын
The white lady may have indigenous roots as Kaperosa - female spirits dressed in all white. Same with Santelmo - in Ilocos, they're more known by their indigenous name, Allawig. Modern Filipino beliefs mostly have indigenous roots, but the names, descriptions, and representations evolved as Filipinos became more Christianized.

There was literally only one thing I could criticize at all While every other character in the whole series sounded like an actual filipino person speaking normally, whether in the english or filipino dub, both of Trese's VAs are kinda bad at speaking filipino Shay Mitchell (english dub VA) sounds a bit too 'merican. This is understandable, and okay when they use english, but her spells are in filipino and she sounds a bit like a GPS when saying them Liza Soberano (filipino dub VA) seems like she was chosen for her celebrity status and doesn't have much experience voice acting. Liza seems to be reading from a filipino thesaurus more than a script, using high-class words that just don't blend in well with the regular civilian talk the other characters use - and while that would be fine for an academically inclined character, Trese as a character feels more inclined towards investigations and fighting than reading books on language. You might say she studies spells, but her spoken spells are actually just regular everyday filipino words used by common folk. Her spell for scrying is literally "reveal what is hidden" but has a more "everyday" feel to it to the point that you could use it in a regular filipino conversation about finding something There's a saying that voice actors leave a little of themselves in each character they portray, it's even more obvious with both Trese VAs as Shay Mitchell consistently portrays Trese as this tough, no nonsense person. Liza Soberano, however, keeps going back and forth between GPS lady, soft princess, tough person, and someone reading a thesaurus without emotion from just the opening narration already - and all four of these aspects just don't mesh well into a single sentence spoken by just one character without a given reason to shift emotionally Again, as a filipino myself, every other character besides Trese sounds really crisp and natural in both dubs, especially the filipino dub. You get the sense in the english dub that they're filipinos speaking english, and you get the sense in the filipino dub that they're just regular people going about their business.
@steamoreeno
@steamoreeno 2 жыл бұрын
I don't like how Liza Soberano is the one dubbing Trese in Filipino. It doesn't sound Filipino enough, you get what I mean? Like, her accent is just not it I like the English dub much better but yeah, the Filipino in that dub is kinda wonky lol.
@Necroxion
@Necroxion 2 жыл бұрын
Okay looking back, I think I have a better analogy for everything now While any other character would say "I found the book in the library", Liza Soberano's Trese would say "I have succeeded in my inquiry on the whereabouts of the journal, and have determined it to be located within the premises of the librarium" Like...yeah, this but in filipino

Ah, so it’s Filipino Constantine, Artemis Fowl, and Hellboy with a protagonist who looks like the chick from Underworld. Sounds tight. I always wanted to see more stuff about that culture’s mythology. Met a few Filipinos in the army, even discussed some of these superstitions with one-namely the manananggal. The animation style looks like Sies Manos if it was influenced by Xtreme Ghostbusters and the properties above. I kinda wish Artemis Fowl got this kind of respect. Like if Netflix gave him this treatment, instead of what Disney did to him. 9:22/22:14 (time stamp) I might try to convince a friend of mine, Luke Patton, to consider an impromptu event with this. A)It’s October, which is Halloween month, and it’s b)magical realism, which was created by a Hispanic man in the 20’s, which is appropriate for Hispanic Heritage month. I know Filipinos are technically Asian but c)their Spanish and western influences have made some see them as Asia’s Latino equivalent, so, eh, 2.5 out of 3 ain’t bad.

Was totally surprised. I though it would be one of those preachy and cringy shows, but it turned out to be well written, dark, gory, and disturbing on so many parts. I loved the combination of family, revenge, psychology, crime noir, fantasy, and horror stories. Truly hoping for a 2nd season. 6 episodes is too short for such a gem. Beats out those dumb AF woke fantasy shows that Netflix have been churning out lately by a HUUUGE mile. Those borefests have 20 plus episodes in them focusing on wokeness rather than compelling stories. Budget should be given to these types of shows.

I remember growing up and seeing those creatures on the TV every time it’s near my bday (Near Halloween)... like I remember this one ep or one show where they had a lady w a dump on her front or back(?) and every night it disappears because the baby comes out and eats people she has interacted with that’s why they like call her bad luck 😭... so like if you see how they animate or create the images of these creatures it’s not cute at all 😭😭😭

I enjoyed the show. I felt the pacing needed work, they could have given a little more back story at the start so we understood the stakes and why people (and spirits) were doing what they were doing. But it's a minor criticism. Hope it gets a second season.

I remember my cousins before were chased by sigbins at dawn. Sigbins run backwards but super fast. They're with their friends and came from a party when they saw a weird looking dog. And found out it was a sigbin. Lmao. So funny when they're telling it to us the next morning.

We need a Show with a Detective who deals with Supernatural Creatures from each Mythology. He knows the Tricks or what works against those Creatures and is a capable Fighter. He has some Connections and Partners that help him now and then with their Powers to travel between the Realms because some Mystery or Riddles can only be solved at the other Side or both Sides. If done well such a Show could run for Years. But the Creator of such a Show needs to be as enthusiastic as the Detective who read Books and Stuff about Mythology and Creatures to understand them well enough. Such a Show needs Love and good Research to be successful. I would love to see such a Show.

Great job with the pronunciations, got most of them right. A couple of thing to point out though. The "ao" vowel combination in Filipino isn't read like the ao in "chaos", but like the Chinese greeting "nihao". So Talagbusao rhymes with "how", not with "Play-Doh". Trese is the "mandirigmang babaylan"; the last part should be read like Buh-bye-lan, not like Babylon.

Saying "tabi tabi po", is also used to inform anyone in the vicinity you are just passing through as not to intrude in the unfamiliar location. If it works for spirits, it should be respectful enough for the locals.
