Lovely models Oscar. The R50 princess was my first model from my Dad in the 1950s... Opening that boxed set at Christmas was amazing (even though it was second-hand) ... had some great fun with that set, especially when we upgraded from the battery controller to a "battery eliminator" mains powered controller... still playing today with more modern models...

Good morning Oscar, it's Martin from Hull in the East Riding of Yorkshire. I've just watched your excellent latest video. Wonderful to see your Princess Elizabeth locomotive and her rake of Pullman coaches. I remember as a little boy I had one of those locomotives and a rake of blood and custard coaches. I often wonder what happened to all of my model railways, as far as i can remember my mum passed it all to one of her relatives children who apparently trashed them all in a very short time. I was very upset about it at the time and I vaguely remember my parents having quite big arguments about it which was quite frightening at the time. But when i was 15 and left school and got a job with British Rail my dear dad was so pleased for me that it made me so happy, mum didn't show any emotion. So when I watch your videos the memories always come flooding back. So I always look forward to your videos Oscar. Well it's time for my cup of tea and my toasted tea cake. Keep safe Oscar and I hope you have a good week ahead. 👍🚂🙂

Yes... in those days, our parents decided when it was time to surrender our boyhood along with all the trappings instead of letting us grow out of it naturally. I vividly remember my mother giving my prized Triangs away to a little boy who just happened to be visiting one afternoon. You couldn't go against your parents' wishes in those days. 55 years on and "look how big my collection is now mum"... 😂 It was the same with my Dinkys and Corgis... which, like your story were trashed within a week of giving them to my nephew. I have since managed to pick up a few of the more memorable models but have had to draw the line due to space constraints as the train collection takes precedence. It's never too late to start collecting again.

Good afternoon, Martin, great to hear enjoying the videos and they bring back memories. My model railway items were all put away as I found other interests. I left Home and my parents moved several times before I became interested in railways again a few years ago, I know a few of my contemporary Hornby items of the late 70s and early 80s were passed on to another family member, the Tri-ang items which they we're not interested in were disposed as the various moves happened.. All the best. Oscar

Hello...just rerun a video of yours from 3 years ago when you ran R257 and the EM2 and I mentioned that I have the CKD version of the EM2 but no instructions. You kindly posted the instructions for me and I never realised it until today. The purpose of this message is to say thank you. On a different note I too have the green Princess Elizabeth and the early Pullman coaches. Nick Jervis

Great video. I never realised that you can release the wheel the way you have demonstrated, thank you. I have owned Princess Royal maroon sleeper set since 1962 and it runs really well. The pictures on the set boxes are tremendous and very evocative. Your loco's are running really smooth, very impressive. Thank you for sharing.

Good morning Cameron, thanks again for looking in. Glad you enjoyed the video. I have been very tempted in the last couple years by some of Hornby versions of the West country class, locomotives and the Q1, I have been very close to purchase a couple of times with secondhand versions at shows, But dealers seem very reluctant to remove the models from the packaging for inspection.. Another superb start to my Sunday Oscar. As I often do I had a look at my comparable loco and coaches. My coaches are good but my loco is not in as good a condition as your older one. I am sorry to hear that car problems continue to plague you, it must be very frustrating. As that was Feb. and we are now on the cusp of April, I hope it is all sorted now. Regards, David.

Greetings once again Oscar! I always thought it was odd that it took two years for Tri-ang to come out with the R.328 Brake coach to match the R.228. If you check Pat Hammond's first volume on Tri-ang Railways, there is a picture of an exhibition layout with the then Minister of Transport Sir Brian Robertson and the company General Manager John Doyle. On the layout is what appears to be a prototype for a Brighton Belle set with the R.228 Pullmans. Perhaps if the Southern EMU set had sold better this might have appeared. I think the brake tooling may have been intended as a Brighton Belle powered/dummy tool. The Pullmans were certainly styled after the Brighton Belle stock. A definite what if??

Hi there Oscar ,, I am soon going to attempt to de-axle the pullmans and repair the other carriages I have here as there the open box axles like you have. I am making up a jig type set up tomhold the axles in place out of a piece of billet alluminium that is 20 cms wide by 20cms deep and is 30mm thick so that should be plenty of depth for the axle to go through the ally and I will drill some holes in it and set up a rubber pad for the bogies to lay on and so I can knock the axles into the holes so I dont damage the the rivets or the bogies holding the carriage together. I was thinking of using a piece of rubber like the side wall of a bike tyre or car tyre or 4wd tyre or truck tyre if need be but I will have to experiment to get the right thickness for the bogie to sit on. Then drill some holes in the rubber bits for the axles to go through into the billet of ally. I got the piece of ally from a vineyard that was there stainless steel conveyor belt for boxing all of there boxed wines for selling and exporting and when i was pulling it apart i was thinking hmm these thick plates of ally might be good for the axle removal plates for my trains. I bought the carriages over 2 or 3 years ago and i have bought quite alot of spares in the last 3 years thinking they may be handy for the wheel and the axles in some of the better carriages i have here. The broken carriages i got for free pretty much as in they were goint to chuck them in the bin so i said noooo I'll keep them for spares as in for wheels and axles if your going to chuck them. Q. Are all the axles for the open box axles the same as in all of them the same width length and thickness. I know some of the wheels different sizes as I really would like to replace them all with steel wheels in the near future. Speaking of the steel wheels I had recently bought a southern livery green Spitfire R.374 and i noticed that the tender has the 2 piece wheels like the open box wheels in the pullmans and are plastic wheels too but they have the steel tyres fitted to it so i was wondering if they would suit the pullmans too as the clickety clack of steel wheels sound so much better to my ears than the plastic ones do and I have noticed that steel wheels seems to run so much better than what the plastic wheels do as in less drag so I can utilise more carriages to pull with any loco I have. The only other problem i can see with using the steel ones is the tender on the Winston Churchill has the steel axles but the axle boxes are the closed type. I was thinking they may fit the pullman axles but not 100% sure if they are the same axle width or even the thickness for that matter. I supose if there not the right axle thickness i can just use the original axles in the carriage im applying them too or maybe even i could make up some axles out of the spokes off a push bikes or even a motor bike spokes that I have here if need be. Do you know it there is a part number for the steel tender wheels with steel tyres have part number an R.374 number for them. Now i know this is a long shot but do you know if hornby would sell them new or would you know anyone that has any for sale or point me in the right direction to buy some as I need quite a few sets of them if I am going the steel tyre route. Again sorry for so many question's but my interest in the hobby has really sparked up as now im back in the hobby after a 40 year hiatus and now there is videos like yours and others to help us all out with repairing fixng painting trouble shooting and i really love it. So thanks a million for all the trouble you go to to put these videos on for us all. Very Muchly Appreciated. Cheers from John in Australia.

Afternoon John, glad you enjoyed the video, great to hear you're gonna renovate some of the wheels on your coaches. It's just getting into a routine with a handful of items you are comfortable with. And you can never have too many spare parts axles wheels couplings all turned out to be useful at some point in time. Some of the axles have rounded ends and so have cropped off, and, but I think the diameter of the axle is the same the coach and wagons with open axle boxes, those plastic wheels with steel tires used in the early t lates 70s, make a terrific sound on the rails. Some of the tenders and coach bogies do have closed axle boxes, but still have sleeved wheels, both running freely on the axle should be relatively easy to remove and service, not sure if they'd fit the Pullman, but it's getting hold of enough of the things I imagine would be a problem. Have a look at this page these may be the items you're looking for, www.hornbytriangspareparts.co.uk/item/X738-HORNBY-TRIANG-2-X-TENDER-WHEELS-CHROME-EDGE-ASSY-SLEEVED-B-OF-B-V1A there are some interesting wheels, tires and axles on this website. All the best. Oscar

Hi Oscar, Lovely Pullmans and Princess. Also nice sedate scale speed running session 👍 Off this afternoon with a couple of club members to view a nice layout, locomotives, rolling stock and controls, all for sale. Sadly the owner has passed away and the family are moving it on so we’ll see how that pans out. Establish ed layouts are always a difficult proposition. Regards, Gordon

I have to chuckle and smile now, but I always loved that artwork on the trainset boxes, which showed you just what you could have if your father was obscenely r8ch or you were able to save your pocket money for a 1000 years. What really makes me laugh is the high level track that actually went nowhere and the tracks under it that also terminated at the end of the board. I. Still wondering what the r number is for the rich dads pipe. I can see it now R671s , Briar pipe with smoke 5/3d

Hi Oscar, I think that the cable drums are very early Tri-ang? I have a set with black plastic ends and silver cable centers.. These came new on an early (Mk 2 coupler) 4 wheel flat wagon.. I have Pirelli cable printed logos made up for these.. I'll send you some by email, to cut out and glue on when you get a chance?

Hello again Oscar. Were Triang unique in selling steam locos with their tenders in separate boxes and shown as separate items in the catalogue? I don't recall Trix or Dublo doing it in the 1950s and 60s? regards Paul

Good morning Paul, it seems an odd way to go about it local and tender being separate. Would've been nice to have those lovely lift off lid boxes big enough to have the locomotive and tender packaged together. The boxes for the tenders was seem to disintegrate quite rapidly. All the best. Oscar

11/6 equals 57.5p in "new" money. That means that buying a carriage today is approximately x 100 more expensive than in 1960! I'm not naïve, and am well aware that modern product is far better detailed, comes with metal wheels and may possibly have lighting, but even allowing for inflation - Jeez!!!!!!! And in any case, the ones you have still look really good.
