Hello steve, thank you for the data I have a question I hope you or 1 of the community could help with I'm planning on creating an accounting/bookkeeping app but I'm still not sure on how long should the trial period be could some1 share some of theri experience or a peice of advise on that? Hi Steve, when you say trial, - Must the user be mandated to subscribe during onboarding? - Must the user be not given any option to skip the trial? In the sample you show at 1:30 there is no skip button for test B

- No they don't have to if they don't want to. - Yeah I think I messed up while taking the screenshot. They can skip this page if they want.

2:44 why are the number of sales blurred? That looks like 2 sales and a refund which make this really dumb.

Prompt users to buy during on-boarding will increase sales. But, will it decrease app retention rate? As some users might not like "pushy" marketing sales up front.

No it won't. For subscription apps, I believe retention is driven by subscribers. There's a stat out there that says 80% of people will NOT come back to your app for the 2nd time.

Currently, our app (note taking app) doesn't have any on-boarding screen/ process, as we want the first time user able to do what he wants (take note) directly, has a smooth & awesome first-time impression, without presenting him extra info. Looking forward the coming Friday 9am pacific time streaming, and hoping my app will get reviewed. I am new to this channel and find it has a lot of useful marketing information. Thank you.

I don't get, you are asking users to download and then ask them to subscribe from day one? No option to skip the trial based subscription?

Victor, you can skip the subscription, but unlike popular belief most users buy during the first time experience.

I regularly follow your videos and appreciate them very much but this time I think it's bullshit I see the following problems 1. too little data 2. it seems that the split test was not done in parallel. there could just have been more downloads in the same period. So what does the arpu (average return per user/install) look like? 3. skip button is missing at B. Do you have to buy or sign up for a free trial in onboarding? Making data-based decisions is right and important. But it only makes sense if you measure correctly and have enough data available.

Completely disagree with you. 1. We were launched for 3 months without a trial and you can see the spike once we added trials. Also, we compared conversion rates and saw a 10X increase. 2. A lot higher. 3. People can skip it if they want.

@@AppMasters I didn't mean that free trials are bullshit, but how you presented and argued your data. In any case, you should look at more KPIs (eg. CR & ARPU) before making a decision. You seem to have done that anyway, but unfortunately it wasn't clear from the video. I am the founder of an app startup (2k-3k downloads/day) and we have made a lot of mistakes ourselves when it comes to analysing our data and especially A/B testing. This cost us many months of development time. So to all of you out there, be careful. These were our most common mistakes regarding A/B testing: * Not testing in parallel: In the past, our tests always took place one after the other in terms of time. But there are so many influencing factors, so testing in this way is just stupid. e.g. You run more ads in a month than usual, which can have a bad effect on the CR, because advertised users often don't perform the same as organic ones. Or the app is seasonal, so a ski slope app probably works much better in winter than in summer. Or you have changed something else about your app or app store appearance. The list is endless, so always test in parallel. * Change just one thing. Often you make the mistake and change 2-3 things. But then you don't know afterwards what actually had a positive effect. * Too little data: Decisions are often made on the basis of data that is not yet statically significant. That's why you often have to optimise on upper funnel events instead of sales. Because a meaningful A/B test optimizing for sales would take forever. This video is confusing.. Are you suggesting we force users to subscribe to a 7 day trIal on download?? And users have to manually cancel the subscription to avoid being charged??

Hahaha, I’m laughing…. This is a bullshit. Absolutely incorrect way to measure impact. Also from you chart I can 100% say that you don’t have enough data. If you have 1 subscriber and next month you have 2, it doesn’t mean you have 100% increase. It means that you have no clue how to run AB tests….
