I have a similar story, except my teacher was in on it! In 8th grade we were supposed to do a reenactment of the writing and signing of the Declaration of Independence. We all had to draw a name from a hat and research our historical person and what they brought to the DOI. But she skipped over me during the picking. I was really confused until she told me to stay after class. I went to her desk and she tells me: “Hey, so I’ve got a deal for you. You’re the shortest in our class and James Madison? One heckuva short guy. So you’re him by default. But here’s the catch: the dude just listened and wrote down what everyone said. So all I want you to do is show up on the day dressed up and I’ll give you a stack of paper and a feather pen and you can just draw or scribble or write whatever you want. Just don’t tell the others!” I was like “Oh heck yeah!” And kept it to myself. Needless to say when the day came I had a field day drawing OC’s on the “Declaration of Independence” LOL Such a fun memory!

Personally, it's three things: 1. I'm usually a quiet and reserved king of girl. And I didn't always get listened to when I was younger. So when I'm in front of the class, I'm happy because at least everyone has to behave, and some people might even listen to what I say. 2. I LOVE learning new things and sharing fun facts or my opinions with people. So I always see présentation as a way to share what I like. 3. I am, of course, a theater kid. But in the first two points, I was talking about general oral presentation. When in a case like Becca or when I'm doing a scene. I'm usually less stressed because I know that's not me in the spotlight but the character I play as. Which makes it ways less stressful because when people laugh, it's generally at the character and not me. I've also learned over the years that if you make a mistake, it's better to improvise with it than to stress over it. The general public will most likely not even notice that you've made a mistake, and the one who knows the scene will respect you for still committing to the bit. TL:DR Sometimes, the show must go on If you are anxious about doing something in front of a group, here are a few tricks: 1 is probably the most complicated. Imagine that it's not you doing the presentation but a character you play. If you can't imagine it, maybe try to bring a small costume piece like a pair of glasses or a cap, for example, and wear it during the presentation. It should help your brain make the difference between normal you and presentation you If you know what I mean. You can also try to change your voice or posture, but it is more complicated. 2. General trick: Being anxious is a good thing. Try to think of your stress as a weapon to help you during hardship. In this example, the anxious if in the proper mindset can help you remember your subject or even try to synthetise it (the exact opposite of what I'm doing right now, mind you). 3. Try as much as you can to have fun. You're probably not the only one to not like those kinds of homework, and it's fine. Just make sure you don't psyche yourself too much. Sometimes, too much preparation is not enough. Be kind to yourself if you make mistakes and take one part at a time. I hope that helps people who dread public presentations being less stressed out and maybe start to find somethings that they enjoy in it 😊.

I pulled something similar, but on a college professor of mine. The semester before I took a Mythology course with this professor, she was working on a list of required reading for the course. I am a mythology nut, so I recommended a book I had been studying a while back. The Book of Imaginary Beings by Jorge Luis Borges. I had read this book top to bottom. I could basically recite every creature contained within. And to my surprise, she picked the book. It was our main required reading for the course. Needless to say, that Mythology class was my easiest class that year and I walked away with really good grades. (I was even banned from answering questions during lectures with two of my friends because we were knew too much and the rest of the class deferred to us, which our prof wasn’t happy about.)

My 10th grade literature and composition class had a similar style report on authors. I got to wander around the classroom acting like a schizophrenic junky slipping between bouts of madness and lucidity, culminating in a depressive ramble about a particular bird, leading to blacking out to end the scene. The teacher absolutely loved it. My classmates were both horrified and delighted. I, having always suffered from paralyzing stage freight despite loving theatre; was pale as death, sweating bullets and shaking like I was going through withdraw.

Even though you chose someone easy, the quality and effort you put into the presentation was obvious to the teacher, so I am glad they rewarded you for it. Most others would probably give you a C at most just for doing the assignment. That happened to me and my classmates once. We had to draw a picture depicting a moment from Moses story where he freed the Jews from slavery. It just so happened, without any coordination or communication between classmates, a good 90% of the class choose to draw the same scene. Everyone in the classroom got a C grade for it because we picked the “easiest” scene to draw regardless of the quality of the picture. And anyone who drew a different scene got an automatic A grade. Again, regardless of quality.

Those situations are the reason I think that for these kinds of topics students should first present a handful of quick sketches before deciding on a motif. In our art class we once were given the task of making a illustration on the prompt "Dream to fly". And a lot of people in the class either drew a bird in a cage or a girl on a swing. There even were fights because some of the students accused others of stealing their idea.

I chose Napoleon Bonaparte- I liked horses, and he was the king of shortness and hero to the French people. All plusses. I did a charcoal drawing of him riding atop his noble steed which took six week to complete in his class. The teacher was so impressed he gave me an A+, showed it to everyone in class and put it on his side wall where he kept final projects he considered to be the best of the best. It was one of my finest moments in school.

In 10th grade, we were supposed to write an essay or do a creative project on a topic of our choice. We had half a school year to work on it and we had to follow criteria depending on what you decided on. I found that unless you decided to build something big, the criteria for a creative project were less strict and easier to implement. I also had no desire to write an essay on a scientific, historical or mathematical topic, so in the end, I did a little tricking and I chose short stories as my topic. My task was then to write a short story and that wasn't really difficult for me, since writing was my hobby and, in the end, I was already finished after a month and got a good grade. (Apologies for translation errors. I was too tired to translate it myself so I used google translator for the most part)

Me: *takes notes* AMAZING STORY!!! I love history, animation, and your channel! 11/10! And I would say hustling a teacher and them admitting to it, is an A+ by itself. (I may or may not have done something similar in my speech class 😅)

A friend of mine tried a few witty bits like this during a project we were given. Nothing on this level, but given we'd recently had mock exam papers that had the occasional page that literally just read 'This is a blank page', he threw a couple of his own into the booklet we had to make for the project.

I think the teacher was amused, especially because it was a very smart way to have an easy project! You also probably need to know your presidents to do it lol

I think that's the key. The point of a report is to learn enough about Presidents and history to be able to write the report. And picking WHH means you already know enough to realize that he'd be an easy report.

Rebecca, I was stuck at the part when you referenced Animaniacs for the assignment hence you kind of reminded me of what I did in MY middle school. And yes, I have watched a few episodes for this. You see, back then, MY history teacher made us do a challenge of naming as many Asian countries as we can. And after I went ZANY TO THE MAX as Yakko Warner at home, this was my time to shine in school. I actually wrote the first half of the third verse of Countries of the World, that's where Yakko sang the Asian countries, and after I wrote it all down, and the teachers asked one of the students in my class to read it, I personally want someone to read the first half of the third verse without noticing, well, let's say it was the first challenge I not only had to accept, but also WON! I don't remember what my prize is, but let's pretend it was the dollar bills I earned. And not only did I had some dollar bills, but I also got an A+ along with it!

That sounds like it was a fun class. Props to you. I also convinced 2 of my college professors to give me relatively "easy" work. My senior thesis (which I had to take twice) was on anything we wanted, so I asked if I could use authors and they both said yes. First was a look through the golden age to the new wave of science fiction. Second time around was a look at the Victorian Era through the works of HG Wells. Both times, I got to use books the authors wrote, so that was nice. (Still had to find about 10 more primary sources, but that's college for you). Passed that time around, so WORTH IT!

My school did the same thing, I got stuck with FDR. Everyone else’s written speech/paper was like 3-4 pages max. Mine was 8, I was so pissed. Each person got like 5 minutes to read their speech, I was the only one who wasn’t able to finish.
