The field reclaim process continues. Alan finishes discing the field with the International 1256. After that, the field is ready to plant. Alan had some old conventional corn in storage, so we're going to see if that seed will grow. Alan uses the Farmall 560 and John Deere 7000 corn planter.

Good deal!! I had some old corn seed left over time, one year i just threw it all in my old massy grain drill and double sowed it. When it got around 3 feet high i green chopped it for the heifers, they loved it. All i did was spread some manure down and disked it in the sowed it. When Fall came i seeded the field to wheat!!! Thank You once again for the great video!!

Wishing you all the luck with the aged seed corn that you planted. Seeds as we all know, are living things and each has their own shelf life. Depends on how and where they are stored. When I was on the farm, we were told by the some of the older farmers in our area that seed corn has a shelf life of anywhere from 1 to 3 years. You can test ta few seeds prior to planting by putting 10 or so on a paper towel then fold the paper towel over them, wet the towel and place it in a zip lock bag. Put the bag somewhere warm (not too warm) and watch for germination to occur. If nothing within 10 days or so, their shelf life has expired. I have my fingers crossed hoping perhaps something magical might happen here!! Excellent job Alan on converting brush land to a nice looking piece of crop land. I tip my hat to you!! Take care and God Bless!!

at 7:50................I would bet the seed will germinate just fine. I once used a bag that was 5 years old and germination was fine. As long as seed was kept dry, I think you will be ok.
@raprock5000
@raprock5000 3 жыл бұрын
Yep I agree Doug sometimes a bag is good five years but on occasion it can go bad in a year. That's why I always test it yearly now after one bad experience. Heck my uncle bought some new seed this season for actual farming that only had 70% germination, even though the bag test date said 95%. There a guy would fail because I've never tested a new bag of seed I purchased ahead of time , only the following year and after.

That "before" field looks like my grandmother's old field I farmed as a teenager. I left home in '85 and the property wasn't farmed (sold with her estate) in '87. The Popple etc are slowly taking it over. Current owner has no need or use to farm it, and even if they wanted to rent it the modern day big farmer has no interest in investing the time etc to reclaim it being such a small field. In a way it's good for the wildlife, lots of marginal ground very hilly etc has gone back to nature as modern big farmer isn't keen on trying to farm some 2-3 acre oddly shaped field that they can't access with the big equipment!

Next year three of the kids will be old enough to pick rocks with a slow tractor and a low trailer or stone boat, youngest of the three sits and steers, the other two, one on each side, as they zig zag around the field at about one and a half miles an hour they can pick a lot of area in a couple of hours. That is how I started, was picking rocks putting along on a JD model D.

Nice field reclaim. When I get that free wildlife seed corn I always test 50 or 100 kernels the week before I plant. Just put them in a ice cream pail or something similar the week before then you'll know the germination. That's too much work for failed germination in my opinion...👍🇺🇸 Turning up the seed rate was a good idea ....

I did that with the bag of 5 year old seed corn I mentioned. Late March I took my wife's oldest cake pan and filled it with dirt from the shaded grove. Counted 100 kernels and planted them in cake pan and set in milk house utility room. Over 95 kernels sprouted and emerged.

@@oxford821 there's a Dekalb seed corn dealer that donates some seed for food plots. He's also in the pheasants forever chapter in our county. It's usually seed left from their show plots or left over seed from the year before. It generally is always real good...only one bad time. The time I didn't test it ahead of planting...check with your county pheasants forever or the wild turkey federation in your area the usually can get it for you. A certain amount anyways...
