Got a speed twin back in December and love it. Dont know how fast it will go top end and don't care. Got plenty of passing power and handles curves well. Also serves as garage art. Age 68 now after lifetime of riding this is my favorite bike. Something about a European big twin that just suits me.

The Street Twin, like most of the Triumph Classics, has a good bit of restriction in the ECU. The Bobber and even Street Triple RS have top speed limiters in place that can't be bypassed... What you can do is use TuneECU to raise the rev limiter, and get rid of the Throttle By Wire restriction... Even if you are giving it 100% throttle, it only delivers that to a certain RPM, and then it closes down to 70% or so from there to redline... You can get rid of those restrictions easily with TuneECU and an Android phone... It will make max power to redline without the ECU closing the throttles and restricting you...

Plenty fast, and i much prefer the 0 to 90 mph rush ripping down canyon roads, with strong breaks, great lean angles and a quick throttle response.

youtuber justdad has got a very similar Thruxton to somewhere around 140 MPH at Bonneville. I think he played with the sprockets and maybe a small fairing, but he said the engine was pretty much stock. Mind you for me in the UK this is all pretty much theoretical ! It's how it gets to 70 MPH that counts, and the Speed Twin is plenty fast enough for that . In the UK , that sort of speed on our crowded roads is "Go to Jail" time, a few years riding ban, and impossible to get insurance afterwards !!!! Ride safe .

Nice video! Some suspect the Speed Twin and Thruxton to be speed limited by the ECU. I've had my T120 to 125 indicated, and it seemed that air resistance kept it from going faster. Was that a red oil pressure warning light?

Not that it much matters, but for accuracy, you would now now go the other way on that road as fast as you can and take the average of the two terminal speeds. That said, as a speed twin owner, our bike is all about using the torque in the twisties. Roll-on for days....

Which fly-screen is that up front, out of curiosity? FWIW, I'm about to do a sprocket swap to an extra tooth or two; in 6th, I imagine that'd make a noticeable difference, in addition to rendering 1st and 2nd gear a little more useable. IMO, the only thing I don't like about the Speed Twin is that the gears feel a little too short. I know it's not a highway cruiser, but it'd be nice to sit in sixth for awhile without it screaming away like a smaller displacement bike.

Rizoma short fly screen. The gear ratio feels good to me, but 6th gear could be a bit taller so highways are a bit less vibration heavy.

Had 136mph out of my Speed Twin. What have you done to yours to make it lag like that. Although your never gonna be riding around at thoughs speeds anyway, so it's not really an issue.

Fast!! I’ve a Speed Twin too and I love it! I’ve the catalizer removed to gain more horse power. One question: 1) Could you enumerate that use to gain more horse power? (Decat, X-Pipe, any booster?...) Congratulations, I can't accelerate that way without raising the front wheel or losing control on the rear wheel (Traction Control Off). I love all your videos! :)

Seems like you were engine speed limited, a slight change of gearing and you would be deep in the 135+ range

@Adam Croll Nice video! Is it comfortable to ride without cat and db killers? Not too loud? I think you have the most upgraded Speed twin =) What mods would you recommend as the most useful?

The sound level is fine for me, I’m sure it’s a personal tolerance level though and another factor might be what helmet is being used. Mine is on the quieter side!

More interested in the 0-60 then top speed. Looks like you did it in 3 seconds, WOW! So what have you done. Slip ons, X pipe and improved air filter. Is that all? Do you get any popping from pipes and if so does it annoy you? Thanks Adam! Like I said buying in May. ST or MT-09. I am leaning with the ST with results like this. ST just has more character!

I always wanted a MT-09 as well, but yes the character of the ST is through the roof compared to the MT. I do have some popping however the booster plug installed along with plenty of ecu adaptation time has brought it down to a minimum. I don’t even notice it anymore.

The speedometer will give you around an extra 10% so the GPS will be more accurate

Ya. I just bought one of these. If you want to go hauling ass down the interstate at a buck fifty than this probably is not the bike for you. However, this bike is plenty fast enough for me.

Gasoline my friends! California has 10 to 15 % Ethinol in its gas. You can only buy 91 Octane at the pump. If you want to go faster buy 100 or 110 octane racing fuel at your friendly race shop. Haha ( Not legal on the highway ). But who is watching you at your home in the garage. Not me.

Wow...I had hoped for 140. My little FZ07 would do 125 by gps and it was only 689cc. The Speed Twin is still much more and a better bike and better looking by far. I guess 128 is more than fast enough. I spend most of my time under 70mph.

It's the gearing. Swap out the sprockets and 140mph is easy!

This bike is weigh a ton , and suprisingly the 1200cc engine only manages to pump 203kmh makes me think twice before i migrate into classic/cafe Triumph bike. comparing to my current Aprilia Tuono V4 its much well balanced optimized power to weight ratio that is hard to replace the fun.

It's easy to replace the fun if you have a different definition of "fun". For me, "fun' isn't about power to weight ratios. I have a 1300 VTX that weighs 750 lbs and I have had nothing but fun with it for 14 years even though one could argue that the power to weight ratio isn't all that good. Why does everyone think that you cannot have fun with a bike unless it can go zero to sixty in under 3 seconds or something like that? That attitude seems so silly to me.

And he's got to red line it before upshifting. He's changing gear at around 5,500 rpm when there's still speed to be had in the lower gears. Only from 5th to 6th does he red line it.

@@admiralbeez8143, it was a top speed run so where he shifts won't affect the top speed. Top speed is determined by max RPM and final drive gear ratio.

Question: I just got a speed twin 1200 and when “cruising” at 90mph revs are at 5500. Doesn’t seem to want to go above without some pretty noticeable engine shaking. Is that the normal rev range for that speed? Rode a buddy’s T120 and was shocked I could cruise at 75mph in 4th gear at 4000 rpms. My speed twin is in 6th for that. Thanks in advance

Once you are at a real speed, (for sake of argument, aero resistance really kicks in at 60+) - unless the bike is slippery - which unfaired bikes are not, 120 is a ceiling that tops out many bikes without more gearing and horsepower. For each mph above that, you'll need a bunch more. But on an unfaired machine, above 100 is gorilla arms required hard slog over any distance. To hit 160 on an unfaired machine, you'll need bucket loads more power, and way longer gearing. The problem there is big lumpy twins start to reach the limits of things. IMHO, the less cylinders you run, the less you want to leave the things red lining..

I was really contemplating trading my 2005 6 speed Monster 620 (top speed 204kmph/126 mph) for a 22 speed twin, but after looking at this top speed from a 1200 cc motor, it is not more faster. Was expecting this to touch 240/250 km/hr

Speed twin has close gear ratios. Top speed is lacking but the pull up to 90mph (still in break-in restrictions, 5k rpm limit no full throttle) is pretty good. If you get a chance to test ride one take it. I'm coming off a Triumph Sprint GT. Ran that up to 147 mph (speedometer indicated). The speed was deceptive on that bike. I was worried about the lack of performance going to a Speed Twin...but the torque comes in low and makes you hold on. It is a fun bike....so like I said, if you get a chance to test ride one do it. You might be impressed.

How is the engine vibration over the rev range ?

In my opinion there is very little vibration to speak of throughout the revs.

The max speed on my Speed Twin is around 70MPH. That's more a rider limitation rather than the bike! Nice to know the top speed, this side of going to a drag strip I doubt I will get anywhere near it.

Good job. I get so tired of those who air-brush out their speedos every time they exceed the speed limit. This was refreshing. Can't remember if you still have the cat installed? And what is the red piece just the right right of the handlebar clamp?

You were expecting 160? On a naked bike with a rider sitting up (camera mount in the way) and only about 80bhp at the back wheel?

With a fairing you would probably reach 140-145...air resistance on a naked bike is not negligible, its like holding a plywood in the wind at 130mph :P

I plan to run different sprockets on mine to reduce the burden on the motor at freeway speed 75/80. did the same on my ZRX1200R when I bought it. Wonder if anyone has done that already that can provide feedback. Would also give you a better top speed, but that is not my real motivation.

It looks to me like 120 mph is the top speed at redline (according to the phone GPS app. reading).

ok... so obviously you cant go by the red on the tach because it went beyond that. if it hit its actual "redline" or rev limit, then it wouldnt go faster

@@powersportsenthusiast1986 There is a reason why manufacturers set a redline limit on their engines. If you want to exceed that limit, then you do so at your own peril. Apparently, they understand the laws of physics better than you do? If you have plenty of money and enjoy the thrill of damaging your engine, then by all means, continue over revving your engine till your heart is content.

If you got the TEC Cam upgrade for the Speed Twin, you may get another 10ish bhp. Also what about sprocket change weren't you hitting red line? Cool video even though I will never go this fast haha

Eric B Looked like he was at or hitting the limiter. Could probably get more with taller gears but it’s a standard bike, not meant for crazy top end. I wouldn’t change a thing. IMO Triumph nailed this perfectly.

You might have squeezed out a few more mph wearing one-piece or zip-together leathers. Jeans must be costing you something. Mind you, I wouldn't really fancy 125 mph in jeans... The tacho was well into the red, though. It probably wouldn't be that good for it using many more revs. Let's face it, if you're really worried about top speed, there are about a zillion faster bikes you can buy, which is why I don't understand why anyone would waste their time tweaking a Speed Twin expensively for more bhp. I have this and a Ducati 999. The Ducati has lots more top end and with a fairing, you can use it. The Triumph delivers huge amounts of fun in other ways (and I know which I prefer in town).

With the weight and the aero’s of this bike you were never going to sniff 160 my pal, it’s not what the bike was intended to do. It’s a fun bike, it’s got power and is fast, but the Aeros and the gearing and really everything about the bike just isn’t conducive to crazy top speeds like some super sport..

140 only? Mine goes to 220 😜😂 Thruxton R with the fairing really goes almost to 220 (in km), Speed Twin is a tic slower, but equally enjoyable. Cheers

Je me demande comment vous avez fait pour obtenir cette vitesse en étant apparemment assez droit avec la pression du vent exercé il est certain que en position limande vous auriez été plus vite .. mais puisque on teste pour voir simplement la vitesse maxi de la bécanne alors ?? de toute maniére la speed twin l'agrément est ailleurs … sinon tu prends autre choses... lors de ma tentative de vitesse maxi... je rappelle que ma moto est totalement d'origine concernant le moteur ,ayant eu pas mal de motos depuis 40 ans toute ces modifs courantes et basiques ( échappements filtre a air sondes lambda booster ………..) quand tu fais le bilan t'a gagné quoi ???? pas grand chose peut etre meme moins ?? t'a dépensé des sous ….je pense que c'est surtout dans ta tete ( ma bécanne marche plus fort ah !ah! ah!. elle est mieux .) une vrai prépa la c'est autre chose ..par contre tu peux avoir une machine beaucoup plus performante au niveau partie cycle sans aucun doute….. on reste des ados …..

Public road, with traffic coming the other way and always a chance of someone pulling out to overtake. So my first thumbs down on You Tube - but your removal of the Corbin gets a thumbs up - so they negate themselves. Love the Speed Twin . almost as much as my Scrambler ;)

Duh, the speedo should be more accurate than the gps. I don't get why so many people rely on digital speedos, they're glitchy and can't be spot on. Yes i know sometimes gps come close but are not 100%.

According to the owners manual, the speedo on my Ducati Scrambler 800 reads 2% faster than actual speed. Not sure why.
