The Triumph Tiger 850 is the entry level Tiger and the only version in the Tiger range I have not tested before. So I packed up my kit and headed out for a day in the saddle to test the real world usability of this middleweight adventure bike! The question is should save yourself 2k and buy the 850 version on the 900??

Less is more! Bit of a school of thought (which I subscribe to) that bikes are getting unnecessarily complicated and expensive. Tiger 850 Sport underlines that perfectly. Well done 300+ miles with no heated grips or handguards, impressive range on that bike too! Love the variety of your vids Chopsie!

Love my Tiger 900. All I would say, is if you're planning on riding through the winter (as I do) then the heated seat, heated grips and the hand guards are an absolute godsend. The illuminated switchgear also helps during the dark mornings and the early sunset times in the winter.

Good review of this tiger and triumph are doing so well with this highly rated model. I’ve downsized from a r1250gs to a gt pro because of a back injury early 21 and enjoying how light and easy to ride. The ride is extremely good perhaps not on a par with the gs but I’m loving it. It was £4000 cheaper than a replacement gs and can highly recommend it to us older bikers who need something a little lighter. Just want to get abroad this year. Happy new year and stay safe.

Nice video! This bike really shows how good a daily bike can be in such basic form vs so many so full of extras and electronics. It was great seeing the Hindhead tunnel. Many a time I would drive through there in previous employment, under the amphitheatre. Milton Keynes with the autonomous delivery trucks; whenever I visit MK with my boys we look out for those. I digress. Good on ya, bringing us such a great video review, and with a stinking cold as well 👍

I have to agree with you: It seems like a really sensible bike at a decent cost. It reminds me a bit of the Suzuki Bandit - not awfully expensive and you could have a lot of spanking fun on it. And when the miles per bladder more or less equals the miles per gallon, then you have a really good range out of it. 😎

Great Vid Chopsy. I watched TMF and Dan's videos which persuaded me. Add a pair of Barkbusters and the Triumph heated grips and it's perfect. Don't right it off as a useable mild green laner. I took it over Salisbury plain yesterday. OK the deep mud was too much although I think that's more down to the tyres than the bike but handles the gravel, potholes and stone tracks absolutely no problem. Takes me back 30 years to my younger days hooning over the Blackdowns. on my old Yamaha DT125.

Great vid Chopsy. More like £4K difference between 850 Sport and GT Pro. I went for the standard GT which sits in the middle price wise and includes cruise control, heated grips and hand guards for the extra comfort. Also ordered the heated seat which isn't an option on the Sport. Agree the 850 looks better in blue.

Add a set of hand-guards to eliminate wind on the hands - it helps a lot. I have a 2020 Tiger 1200 SE Desert Edition which I think is XCA - not sure. Anyway, it's the trail biased one with wire spokes and all the gadgets and modes except the heated seats. I don't need all the modes, but here are the things I wouldn't want to give up - cruise, heated grips, and the blipper/auto shifter. Love that blipper - it's integrated with the ABS/IMU/traction control to keep me from downshifting too fast, meaning you can downshift too fast without wheel hop.

Ive had an 800 Tiger from new, 2012, but Im thinking of getting a new one of these. It will be used for two up touring abroad and trips around the country to see my sons. As you know the original 800 is very smooth throughout the rev range, no vibes at EU motorway speeds, Ive enjoyed that as we often cover 500 + miles a day. Are the vibes, often mentioned with the 850/900, going to be a problem on long, fast, motorways ?

You can spec most things (except cruise) and still save money by getting the spec you want. Unfortunately it seems like the “go large” mentality for everything in the UK (like the huge number of massive tank BMW R1200GSAs sold to people who can barely manage them and have no use for all the toys) makes buyers frown upon this approach. Triumph deserve to sell loads of these and should be congratulated for making a bike riders need, can fully use, and might be able to buy without getting sucked into the PCP merry-go-round! Even with heated grips and a centre stand plus luggage it’s still cheaper than the basic GT Pro or most of its rivals, without really losing anything.

Certainly an option for reducing your financial commitment and maybe a lower seat height too. At 5’6” with a short leg, the rally pro was likely not the best choice, but we also use our eyes and the Rally Pro seduced me with its looks. I did nearly 800 miles in one day riding it back from Munich to go to the ABR festival, without feeling fatigued, which isn’t bad for a 58 year old. I have ridden the bike in temperatures down to 1’C which was hardly noticeable with the heated grips and heated seat 😉 I have not taken it off-road, however I hope to get some training this year 🤞 Ian Back on Two Wheels

It would take a finely calibrated tush to tell the difference between 84 and 94 horsepower. I own a Tiger 900 GT Pro but I can appreciate the 850 there is several however those extra features do make the GT Pro worth it to me. Several features I've never had before but would not give up now that are absent from the 850 but the extra horsepower isn't one of them. My wife and rode two up with the three hard bags and averaged over 48 U.S. mpg in over 1800 miles so I agree the range is up there. I can see why some might choose the 850 over the 900 but a lot of rider friendly items especially for all seasons riding make the 900 slightly better for me.

What year bike do you have? Do you have the new "T-Plane" engine? I was 100% sold on getting a Tiger, because I wanted the electric smoothness of the triple. But then at the last minute, they changed all their engines to a rougher running "T Plane" crankshaft.
@flatcapcaferacer
@flatcapcaferacer 2 жыл бұрын
@@Ritalie I have a 2021 Tiger 900 GT Pro. I also have had a 955i and 1050 Tigers and this is the best engine of them all and that includes the Tiger 800 which I rode quite a bit as my buddy owned. Compared to the previous Tigers I'd say there is a tiny bit more vibration over 95 mph. There is a difference in vibrations but it isn't a bad difference and as one whose fingers are affected by vibrations I have ridden 5 days and almost 2000 miles on one trip without any discomfort. The Tplane motor gives better pulling down low, and a lower center of gravity and is much lighter feeling than the Tiger 800. I was a big fan of the Tiger 800 but this engine is just better in my opinion.

Ooh, that's a little brave, pointing out that all the bells and whistles on motorbikes probably aren't needed. That's always been my opinion but I appreciate a significant proportion of bikes are bought on PCP and/or traded in when the warranty expires, leaving the 2nd hand market to worry about the cost when they break. Naturally enough manufacturers are only concerned with new sales. You missed one selling point as far as I'm concerned, does it have a center stand?!!! ☺

Bought an 850 Sport and added heated grips, handlebar protectors, crash bars, headlight protector, upgraded skid plate, quickshifter, tank guard and an extra USB. I may change the windscreen to the upgraded GIVI. I consider this my 899.5 Sport...lol. Only thing missing is the cruise control and a few riding modes from the 900. I can live with that and didn't spend the farm on the 900 which I don't really need. Don't sweat the front forks being a fixed load. You can always change the springs or the oil in them to suit your driving style. My only gripe is the TFT. The display is weak and a bit hard to read and decipher sometimes. Anyhow... Love my Sport.

Sweet, picking one up sat, the guy added all of that plus full paniers and top box. Bunch of other stuff. Non cruise is a deal breaker, but gonna make it work for the price!!

Is this worth the extra over the Circa 2015 1050 Tiger? Having a fancy TFT isn't important to me. The Tiger and the Kawasaki Z900rs would make an ideal 2 bike garage for me.

I love this bike Who needs all those Gizmos Motorcyclist’s Adam Wahid is saying it’s very much like the CB500X In Israel 🇮🇱 this basic Tiger 850 costs 11,000 USD more than a brand new CB500X…(no mistake here) Would anyone in their right mind pay that difference? Thanks for your review 🍻 Happy New Year 🎆 BB

Why skip the GT? Bang for buck I reckon the GT (not Pro) is the sweet spot,,,, but for what I do and where I ride the 850 is all the bike I need.

I wonder if there is a cheeky way to get the features of the other models? Grab an ECU and switch it? I wonder what would be required?

Probably but very expensive way to do it! Plus no cruise buttons on the switchgear so you would need that too!

@@LambChopRides pricing the parts from fowlers for ECU and switch gear comes out at £1,668. Probably a bit too close to the £2K, might as well just get the other bike

Strange Triumph shift assist is £350 on their configurator. Spend another £500 on heated grips and shifter and you have a bargain. I've test ridden the bike and was well impressed. The only thing at the back of my mind is do I save 2k or spend the extra and be grateful if or when the day comes that I have lean sensitive ABS and TC. I'd rather not be sliding down the road wishing i had spent the extra.

850 - £9.4K ..... 900 GT - £11.5K ..... 900 GT Pro - £13.2K. The 850 is a nice bike but it lacks a lot of the desirable features of the more expensive models... even the dash is downgraded from 7" to 5". If you try and up-spec the GT to match the GT Pro it comes in at over £13.5K and still wont have the electronic rear shock or 5th riding mode (they are not available as upgrade options) ... which in my book makes the GT Pro the best value and the one to have ... if ya can afford the extra £3.8K it's definitely worth it, especially if you love having ALL the toys 😉

Always go with the better spec because your resale value depends on it, nobody wants to buy a big standard secondhand bike thus the trade value is proportional lower

My riding buddy is looking at the Tiger. Hope he buys the 850 sport, I want to ride one. Resale isn't an issue for him. He keeps them all: 2001 Legend, 1977 Bonneville and 1967 Bonneville. I ride the 67 a lot and love it.

I believe it’s simply to differentiate it to the 900, as it’s the entry level in the range, in the same way bmw do with the 750 and 850 gs
