Trout Fishing In Arkansas On The Little Red River

A Day Of Fly Fishing The Little Red River: Hooked a bunch and landed a few fly fishing on the Little Red River in Heber Springs Arkansas last week.
The weather and generation schedule was perfect so I took advantage of it and made the trip up for a few hour of fly fishing. #flyfishing #flyfishingarkansas #Arkansas
I started with a size 18 bead head sowbug then tied on a larva lace sow bug tied with tan thread and clear larva lace. The last fly I used was a gold ribbed hares ear size 18. The action was pretty steady with all of them.

You’re going to keep missing hook ups setting upstream and setting like you see on orvis t shirts. Try setting like you’re stripping a streamer hard as you can or setting towards your right shoulder towards the bank in that situation. Trout don’t bite they suck so your pulling the fly right out of their mouth

Great video. I tried fly fishing a couple times. I was super clumsy at it. I’m going to continue working on it because there a couple areas around Bend OR that I like to fish that you can only fly fish barbless.

I’m not the best at it myself and it has taken me years of working on my casting but I would say stick with it because you have some prime areas for it in Bend. Thanks for watching and the comment.

Thanks, I appreciate you watching. The tool is a Ketchum Release Tool, you can get them I think, at BassPro in Little Rock, the Ozark Angler, or here is a link to them on Amazon amzn.to/3q0Egpz . It's just a quick way to release them without stressing them out more by taking them out of the water, I fish all barbless hooks so the release is pretty easy.

The JFK dam site has a lot of spots to wade or bank fish if they are running water. Same for the Swinging bridge area. I spoke with my dad this week, he lives up that way and the lake is a foot or two below what it should be so they will not generate much until it comes up some. Thanks for watching and the comment.

Great video! I’m planning on fishing the Little Red this coming weekend. I’m just starting to transition from spin to fly fishing and was wondering if you have a “go to” fly for that stretch of river? Or have any other advice for this very green novice?

You can fish a sow bug year round and they come in all shapes and sizes with a bead and without. The Browns should start running soon if they are not already so egg patterns work well also. The Ozark Angler in Heber Springs can tell you what's been working well and they should have them in stock. Most folks up there will tell you what thy are using and some will even give you one if they have extra. My tip would be you don't have to cast a mile to catch a fish all that false casting you see in the movies is pretty but you can't catch a fish if you line is not in the water. Just keep it simple, let the rod do the work and have fun cause it sure beats working😏

What weight fly line and tippets are the best for the little red?

I generally fish a 5wt rod and line with between 5 and 7X tippet. That day I was fishing a 4 wt rod that my dad wanted me to try out with the same wt line and 6X tippet. We have some heavier rods that I use for bass fishing but 9 out of 10 times on the Little Red I'm going to have a 5 wt in my hand. I used the same 5wt out west on the San Juan in 30 to 40 mph winds and it worked great. Hope this helps, thanks for watching and the comments.

Gary the only fly shop in the area is the Ozark Angler 659 Wilburn Rd. Heber Springs, AR 72543 501-362-3597 They should have anything you need as far as local flies, tippet, or information on how the fishing has been. Thanks for watching and good luck.

Arkansas Fishing Videos I waded cow shoals on Monday & Tuesday. I stripped a crackle back and a woolly bugger with a sinking leader. Great fish count both days . Thanks for the videos!
