Thank you. After I had gotten to use Sherline I learned to be machinist I fell in love to the plastic metal work, so I recommend Sherline to all who want to start by doing everything themselves as well. I just can say that Sherline really a excellent machine to me. I made many modifications as you can see in my videos and i have a pleasure in for sharing and exchanging experiences here. So I recommend the 4400 lathe line and 2010 mills, metric or inch, Thanks again Luiz

@powaybob Hello, Thanks for you message and question, I use a MINEBEA stepper motor with 7A per phase and 2.2 V and 1.8 DEG/STEP The drive for 7A is made by me and work very well for threads only in my 4100 sherline lathe. This motor is very old and found in an antique copy machine but is very strong. Sorry for my delay Regards Luiz

@sittinduck1337 You are totally correct. Are two stepper motor, X (normal) and Z (more strong) I use any stepper motor com 5 to 7Ap for Z axis. This is a simple way but very eficient for thread with Sherline lathe machines. Here I use the original Sherline gears for threading too, and with my modification the results are fantastics. Any questions please write to me okay. Best wishes fro Brazil. Luiz Ally

I've just bought the Lathe C and the mill A packages and I am totally new to machining. I think your CNC setup is not from Sherline. If it isn't then where did you get it from? Also where did you get your tiny cutting tools which you used for the thread cutting? Did you make it yourself. Great work! and keep it up. Rgds Len

@@tryally I hope you are doing better and thanks for the response. I will be looking into setting this machine up to do threading. Probably the hand method until I can get all the information and parts needed to set it up for CNC threading operations. I have looked at the Flashcut CNC gear in the past but as I already have the Sherline CNC gear, I would just like to find something that would control the threading operation. That is without having to replace what I have but work with what I have. Flashcut looks like a complete replacement. Although I like the fact that it works with Windows where the Sherline setup does not. Either way, your system is incredible. Thanks for getting back to me.

@@TealcJack So I like Mach3 software is many easy and intuitive, works well too. To cut threads using a strong stepper motor like me, I leave you with one thought: The stepper motor is just to moving the axis in instead of the hands use. No secret and works very well. Yes, 32kg /cm 7Amp is an old stepper motor. My suggestion for you is use a potent power drive and a good relation, a 5A drive or more is sufficient. Your motor with 382 oz per inch is equal to 10.8 kl per inch. In my case I use the old stepper moto because I had this motor but you can use other stepper motor with sucess but just with a potent power drive as I said. And too I use it because I make thread in steel, for aluminum, bronze, plastic your stepper motor work well. Sincerely Luiz

Hi, Can you tell me what modifications you did on your Sherline Lathe and what was the feed rate and spindle speed for threading that you worked on. Thank you!
@tryally
@tryally 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Ayan, I put a powerful step motor with a good driver box in the place of the spindle motor in order do not use the hands for to make threads, by this way I get near 300 to 500 rpm with feed rate between 150 ~ 400 mm per minute. Therefore, the rpm and feed rate is combined by the Sherline thread cutting attachment. Just to summarize the step motor is just to run the movement in the place the hands facilitating the work. Look at this too, more about my work, photos, ideas, accessories, micro-tools, videos etc.. facebook.com/tryallytech?fref=ts You are welcome!

Luiz, Just bought a Manual 4530C with the mickeymouse gear-mess threading kit , still trying to figure it out . Well, I have no idea how the CNC version works either.... hmmmm . I have lots of fun making plastic parts that won't fit anything else , for now. I like looking adoringly at this beautiful artwork of a machine . But threads are out of reach I fear. Maybe you should come to my place up North and teach me a few tricks ?

@pasdutout Thanks for watching and commenting, I am always happy when someone makes a comment. Don't worry, I knew absolutely nothing when I bought my first Sherline lathe, today I have mastered it well and can do almost anything with them, I even make some money now and then making small parts for my friends. It would be wonderful if I could come to you and teach you what I know, certainly in one week you would learn what would take 5 or 10 years. Then anyway, here is my invitation, it is much easier and cheaper for you to come to Brazil, we would have a lot of fun with our little machines and you would come back with a lot of knowledge. This CNC system that I use in the video to make threads, I show more about in other videos on my channel, literally was an idea I had that works perfectly and brings professional results, avoiding having to be turning the handwheel manually. In this video below I show it in more detail. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hbSSZ8KByZ2np3k.html

@@tryally Luiz, I'm already making big progress with thread-making : 99% of my thread jobs will be 10 and less mm , for which the std chuck + #1206 die holder + std handwheel (from discarded gears-kit) and rest #1074 should work just fine Better still, many M10 ,M8 , M6 hex heads wont pass through std chuck's center hole , but will fit just right BEHIND the chuck itsef ! So I'm ok thread-wise already. But CNC ...hmmm I'll have to go to your place haha .

@@pasdutout4690 Yes, we get the hang of it little by little and when we least realize it we are even inventing complex things. That is exactly how it happened to me, I really learned everything little by little, even because in my country there is little information and my English is precarious. What I like about Sherline machines, is the variety of accessories, so we can hold various pieces and also because we can create our own solutions to everyday challenges. Since you now make thread , the other things will be simple for you. I still don't have Adjustable Tailstock 1″ Die Holder #1206, I just have Steady Rest #1074, and it is great, I use a lot this accessory. In which place do you live?

hi again I guess for the thread you use the( f )for feed example g0 x20 g01 z-30f1(metric ) g0x19 g01z-30f1 Regards Dennis

It's more complicated than that. F is for the feed rate 1 inch ÷ tpi. Not sure what it is for metric. But it needs a canned cycle as far as I know. You have a g76 and a g92. G92 is easier to program but requires more typing of code. G76 is more stuff to remember and less typing of code. I like g76 but a g92 works well if your threads are giving you problems and you want to completely control the depth of cut on each pass.
