Thanks for sharing and the great information! I’ve knit several Musselburgh and just found it easy to “cheat” with the cast-on. I did the 8 stitches with a long-tail cast-on and divided them into two for magic loop. I ended up with a pencil eraser sized hole that I just used my yarn tail to weave closed. Only another knitter of the pattern may notice the difference. Any gift recipient won’t. For those who want to remain true to the pattern, there is also a video by Mostly Knitting showing a great way to do the circular cast-on.

I love the classic cuffed hat by Purl Soho, and the Slush by Allison O’Mahony. Both are free patterns, I believe!

Great comparison! I’ll definitely check out the Musselburgh hat. My all-time favourite beanie pattern is the Ole hat by Susanne Müller! The half fisherman rib produces the loveliest squishy fabric, the ribbing looks SO neat and I adore both the crown shaping and overall fit.

Appreciated the honest review and separate scores for knitting and wearing! I really don't like the current trend of weird pointy and duckbill?? crown shapes so ignore most new patterns. I also prefer crown decreases to be done in at least six sections because four makes a boxy hat with "corners" on it. I've tried several patterns and my favorites are still the Musselburgh, and the Sockhead Slouch by Kelly McClure, which I believe is free.

Awesome video the avid hat knitter. Personally I think the Manhattan Hat looks best on you :) Although you don't prefer the ribbed, they do look nice on you.

This was a really helpful comparison of the various popular patterns out there. I’ve knit a few of these, and I think you really articulated well why I don’t gravitate towards my 1x1 rib hats. (Although I am wondering if perhaps knitting them at a slightly looser gauge might help with the wearability - I might try that.). I recently knit the Archer Beanie by Sari Nordlund, and I think it’s a close but better alternative to the Robin beanie - Archer has 3x2 rib which makes it more interesting I think (you get 2x3 rib on the fold over brim) and the crown increases are more of a pinwheel construction, which I think looks great.

Great video. I love all the details you include and your opinions and thoughts are helpful. It’s fascinating to me how we all approach things differently and have different things we enjoy/don’t enjoy. It definitely helps me to approach projects from my normal perspective and I also try to look at it from other perspectives. I’ve done the Archer beanie by Sari Nordlund and I enjoyed doing the crown down style. the increases it used were my normal ones and I enjoy wearing it and It’s a 3x2 rib so not as boring as 2x2 (only slightly). I’ve done one Musselburgh and it was good, will probably get another going one of days.

Great review! I love knitting hats. I have made a few Musselburghs and love them all. The other hat pattern I absolutely love is the Dual Loop beanie. I prefer my hats to be fitted on top of my head so I adjust the length. I really like the look and the fit of that one. I knitted the 1x1 brim on 3.75mm so that it wouldn't be tight on my forehead and leave rib imprints... the next one I want to try is the Ole hat.

Such a great video. I make so many beanies as my portable on-the-go knitting. I have made 16 Musselburgh hats and I agree with you - it is great both for knitting and wearability. I have made a few Oslo hats and the Manhattan hat and have thought about the other hats you have mentioned so I really appreciate hearing whether you think they are worth it for the knitting experience and wearibility. Been waiting for this video! I just finished the Brownstone beanie after seeing yours and I really like it. I've knit one 1x1 ribbed hat and I'm not sure I will ever do it again 😅.

Very informative video as I knit many beanie hats for gifts too. My all time favorite is the Musselburgh (have knit over a dozen and three of them are mine), dear husband who prefers brimless beanies loves his Canadian Winter Hats (bulky weight pattern by Sally Melville) knit in 100% alpaca best, Hatch hat, which also can be knit with a fold up brim option (DK weight pattern by Emily Greene) and Gridiron hat (bulky weight pattern by Johnny Vasquez).

Great analysis of a bunch of different beanies! It seems we're all on the lookout for the perfect beanie (why is it so hard to do well?!) and this was really helpful. I haven't knit these beanies except the Musselburgh, and this was a nice confirmation that it's one of the best out there!

Great video and thorough explanation of the positives and negatives. I’ve looked at many hats but as I’m new to knitting (crochet usually) I’ve only made the Musselburgh hat with fingering weight, also held it double, done DK weight and a fingering/mohair held together. My most favourite and love it for gift knitting.

I enjoy when when you compare similar projects. I never knit the Musselburgh because of feedback from other podcasters saying how tricky the cast on is but I think I'll give it a try - especially since there are videos to help with this.

I actually prefer ribbed beanies over stockinette ones (I also find knitting either 2x2 or 1x1 rib very pleasing) - I always feel like the fit is much better. My favourite is to do the lovely ribbed hat by purl soho but with the folded and knit together brim from the Oslo hat and then the visible fold get a purl row for the perfect fold line 😍

Thanks so much for another great video. Loved the roundup of toques and your comments on each. I just finished the Oslo hat and my rating was the same. I’ve got the Musselborough hat queued up, excited to try that now as I’ve heard so many people love it. For the kiddos in my family, I’ve been making the Basic Beanie by @tincanknits. It’s so customizable and absolutely perfect for my 5 month old and 8 year old nephews! They absolutely love them and the ribbing helps them stay on while they’re running around like crazy. 😊 Can’t wait for your next video! Thanks again

Definitely need to make the musselburgh hat now! I also really enjoy making the watchcap hat from Purl Soho. The decreases on the crown looks very nice in my opinion

Thanks for sharing your hat line-up with us! I appreciated the distinction between knittability and wearability. I haven't tried the musselburgh yet, but it is on my to-knit list. I made a Best Knit Cable Hat by Ashley Lillis for my granddaughter a couple of months ago, and may make one for myself for next winter. It knit well and fast, and the fit on her was great. I'm also looking at snoods.

I really enjoyed this round up of hats and found the results very interesting. I’m currently working on my third Musselburg and enjoying it so it was fun to find out that it ended up at the top of your picks. Something I learned from Stephanie of the Edible Thoughts Makes podcast is to start the hat with a provisional cast on, work toward one crown, and then pick up the provisional cast on and go in the other direction to finish the hat. This eliminates the need for the pinhole cast on which I really don’t enjoy.

I love the Brownstone Beanie on you, the color is beautiful. Living in So. California I hardly wear hats. My goal is to knit a Musselburgh hat by next winter to wear when I take the train to work.

I really enjoyed your video! My favorite is the Bobo beanie by Maria Perez Puertas, it's a misha and puff inspired pattern which is in vertical garter stitch, i find it easy, mindless but not boring! you gotta use a temporary cast on with a crochet hook and then sew it with a kitchener garter stitch, but I think you'd love the look. You can add a pompom or not.

I learned how to knit beanie hats, but decided I didn't really like how they looked on me. I've started knitting cloche type hats instead, which are a bit more challenging but are more to my liking. I love the colors you used for your hats.

I agree... the musselbrough hat is pretty much unbeatable. I've only made one in a sport weight blue yarn with silk mohair held with it... luxurious feeling on my head. A definite knit again pattern. Next time slightly longer so I can fold the brim a little deeper.
