Hello Low Buy Beauties! I finally went through my ENTIRE CLOSET, tried on EVERYTHING I OWNED, counted it, and decluttered some. With the goal of getting to know my Stuff Pile in mind, I need to know exactly HOW MANY items I owned. This closet inventory is a culmination of years of impulse buying and prioritizing APPEARING RICH but really being IN DEBT. This is exactly why I still have my student loan. I want to make that clear that some items are luxury and high end, but in reality I couldn't REALLY afford any of them. This video made me see how much I was really Keeping Up with the Joneses in the past. I was genuinely floored by seeing the results of my impulse shopping and addiction in plain sight in front of me. I had never really seen it before like this.
A lot of these pieces are some of my favourite clothes, but MANY are not, which I only realized after doing this and documenting the experience. I'm looking to create a wardrobe of just my favourite clothes, and it really starts with knowing what you have and how it looks & feels on your body. Have you done a closet inventory before?
FYI items marked "*" in the video are gifted or as part of a previous partnership.

This was honestly a rude awakening for me to count and try on all of my clothes. But now I feel empowered with the knowledge to tackle my Stuff Pile, and get to know it even better by keeping what I truly love and enjoy wearing, and ditching what I don't. Please be aware none of this is to show you "look at all the stuff I bought" - I shared everything to get real with myself and with you guys in terms of where my shopping habits have taken me. This is where all my money went. Have you ever done a closet inventory like this before?

I did something like this in college and sold all of my extra items on Poshmark. When I say I made $2,400 on just those clothes alone... it shows just how much things I had and did not need! 😅

Yay! You did it! I have done an inventory of this sort, but I have not kept up with it lately... I did mine on an excel spreadsheet and with the goal analysing it based on three elements: did I feel confident wearing it, condition of the garment, and how likely would I wear this again. I was super inspired by Gold Zipper's blog on wardrobe science.

I think you did a great job! I take inventory of my wardrobe once a year since 2015. Today I have 30 shoes and 130 clothes. I'm happy with all the pieces, they fit me from January to December. ❤️ There is only one rule that I take seriously: whenever I buy or get a new outfit, one outfit has to come out of the wardrobe. I only shop in late summer and late winter to replace some damaged clothes and update my style if I feel it’s necessary. Enjoy your journey and be happy, that's what matters! 😉

wow I am 55 years old and have been accumulating more clothes than I will ever need, I just subscribed because I am afraid my count would be even higher , I have always loved shopping, fashion , and to be honest I could have traveled and done so much more with my life than spending money on clothes I shop when I am happy, when I am sad, and when I am mad . Its an outlet that makes me feel amazing when I do. But afterwards I think what have I done. I am going to declutter and count the next few weeks, and try to be more mindful of what I buy. Great video and I can't wait to see the next one.

gosh this does seem like it was so eye opening!!! not just looking or thinking about the amount of stuff but actually expending the energy to feel what it takes to wear it all. reminds me of a project panning in the makeup community where you see how long it takes to use up just one thing so that you’re discouraged from accumulating more. also can i just say the style of the video itself is so creative !! when you were dropping the hats i thought that was a gorgeous and engaging way to show off those pieces 👏

Hola guapa! Probably 3 years ago i had more than you now.Now after 5 or 6 declutters I own 46 pieces of clothing,11 shoes and 7 bags, 3 winter scarfs and 3 thin ones, 1 pair of gloves, 1 beanie and 1 baseball cap. Thats all, it took me many hours and I keep thinking that I need to declutter again and again because I have realised that I could wear even less. Like you said I only want my love pieces to be in my wardrobe and probably I could be happy with only 3 bags and 5 shoes and 30 pieces of clothing ( thats my goal) Well done !

Nice Job! Don't be too hard on yourself, it seems to me from seeing all of your items that you simply found a shape that you liked and just bought a lot of them in different colors and slightly different styles, it's not really waste because you bought such classic pieces that you can wear these for years to come! And I think we can agree that you won't need another moto jacket for while. I think the trick is to not shop for a while, perhaps a long while,. My closet inventory revealed 24 button downs and only two useable blazers, all fixed now....Cheers from Brooklyn! :)

I'm in the middle of doing an inventory too, inspired by your channel and the great Facebook community, but things are much worse, even after a huge decluttering last year. Only shoes are over 75 pairs. I so much admire people with minimal neat but beautiful wardrobe... And numbers really attract me. But opting for something like 100 items wardrobe seems impossible for now. Good job, thank you, Christina!

Definitely what style apotheca said. The fist time I did a real purge I did it by category. I got all of my jeans, pants (work & athletic), and skirts each in their own piles. I easily cut my jeans and my pants in half just because of them being TOO small. I had over 60 pairs of jeans & pants and they took up so much space. Just doing it felt so good. Some I sold online and the rest (if not damaged) I donated to my local Mission. It has given me the momentum to keep going. Good luck!

Shirley Creed, I did this about 3 years ago and the thing is that you need to plan for it. Plan a day when this is the only thing you have going on, you're home alone or won't be pulled away from the task. Make sure you do it on a cool day or turn your AC up, turn on some good music and prepare more boxes or bags than you think you'll need. Trash, donation, store away and keep in closet. You won't believe how doing this will change other parts of your life. You end up cleaning out your closet, drawers then a week later your jewelry then you just keep going and decluttering all over your house and it is so uplifting. After I did this, I lost 35 lbs even though I'd been trying for years and years. It's just a brain changing, eye opening, very personal thing to try on every piece of clothing and feel and see it on your body and purge what's not fitting, ugly, old, damaged etc. You also start thinking of all sorts of new ways to wear some of your items. DO IT! You're worth it! After 3 years, I'm thinking about doing it again now.

This is such a great idea to declutter-for some reason the amount of clothes you have, and which ones are actually valuable to you, gets easier to see with a montage like this than if you just try them on in the mirror or look at them in the closet-probably because it's a rapid succession of all the items in the same category, and you can also easily see how they compare to each other and seeing it on your body makes you remember how often you included (or not) that item in an outfit.

Amazing editing too! Very inspiring, I think I will come back to this video in future.

I did a try on like this of all my clothes around about a year ago, and i remember it took me 4-6 hours to do! It was a huge undertaking but really interesting as it taught me a lot about the styles I tend to gravitate towards the most. My closet has changed SO much since then which is crazy to think! One thing I’ve done recently in my WWC spreadsheet is add a value to every single item and also calculate the CPW. I’ve been doing this with gifted items too so I can see what the difference is between items I buy myself versus gifted (as in, do I wear one more than the other etc). Now that I’m at the end of my pregnancy, I’m a little curious to see how (if at all) my body has changed throughout and how that’ll affect my closet. Will definitely be doing another one of those try one as it’s so valuable for getting a good sense of the item and whether it’s really working for you. ALSO wanted to say you have less jeans than I was anticipating! I actually think I may have around as many pairs as you!! 🙈

Great vid. I was where you were at the beginning of this year and that was AFTER decluttering in Dec. i counted all my tops, bottoms, shoes, pjs, jewelry pieces, undergarments, socks, purses, jackets, sweaters, cardigans and eyeshadow palettes. In January and February I have decluttered even more. I sold everything I could and donated the rest. I plan on getting rid of at least 18 more items by end of May. I count at the beginning of each month. It’s crazy how much shit I had. The money I wasted! Plus I can’t ever use anything up cuz I have so much...and wearing each item only 1x is stupid. Keep up the great work, it’s exhausting but so wonderful when you reach your goal!

On Friday I finally took out all of my clothes from storage after a big move, and I’m starting to try everything on. Dresses are my equivalent to your jeans, and let’s just say I didn’t even get through them all 😅 I am shocked that you did this all in one day - major props 👏🏼 as I look at my closet, it’s getting easier to part with items that no longer fit my style or just didn’t make me feel as good as other items. Thanks for sharing your journey!

I’m watching this 2 years later and I’ve been binging your content. This video is the first I’m commenting on because it is hitting me the most because I literally counted my items today. No joke my number was 241. I counted bras and sports bras and pajamas, but didn’t count shoes and hats/mittens/etc. So we are probably around the same still. Now I’m about to go watch your updated version of this video to see where you’re at this year. And hope to set whatever your new number is, as a not strict but arguably attainable goal. Love ya!

I did this at the beginning of the year, a bit different though. I registered everything on an Excel spreadsheet. To keep track of what I do use, every day I log what I wore (I colour a cell next to the item). By the end of July, I'll go through my closet with the spreadsheet and get rid of anything that I didn't use a certain amount of times. My total (without PJs, underwear and sports gear) is 251. I was just as shocked by my number as you were, it's crazy how we can accumulate. Thanks for making this video! It's really inspiring and comforting to know I'm not alone in this journey.

Hi Christina! I love this video. I have done this before and because I usually wear a few pieces and forget about what other items in the wardrobe, I end up buying more items than using what I own. So I decided...to take a photo of every single item of clothing that I own, and separated them by category in the photo album on my phone (coats, tops, jeans etc). So whenever I have the urge to buy something, I go to that photo album and have a look at what I already own. I need that visual reminder!

Woow, honestly.... great job! When I compare it to myself, I have 2 jeans, 1 pair of trousers, 6 skirts, 5 dresses. I have to say, curration of this wardrobe is an ongoing process but still. I am proud of myself I dropped to 100 clothes maybe. There is only one rule that I take seriously: whenever I buy or get a new outfit, one outfit has to come out of the wardrobe. I do this cleanup 4 times a year due to 4 seasons, but it helps me to keep me on tracks :) Appreciate your videos very much! Thanks!

I've been watching your video for months and you are very inspiring. I see that the same thing happens in your wardrobe as in my wardrobe - when you like a piece of clothing, e.g. white t-shirts, black joggers, you have several pairs. I'm also learning to buy one or two pairs of similar things that I love because I will not wear it too much. I think it is worth looking for the thing that works best for us. Sometimes this means that even during one season you may not be able to find what you are looking for.

This was really interesting! I'm living in a dorm far away from home right now so I don't have all my clothes with me but I'm pretty sure I must have between 100 and 120 pieces including all categories you mentioned. I find it pretty funny because I don't need many of the things I have back at home since I didn't bother to take them with me. It's definitely gonna help when we'll have to declutter in July when we'll be moving with my mom. I just want to go back to when my mom piled my clothes in a certain order because she knew I would just pick the one on top of the pile. I'm to lazy to pick from all of the things I have. You did such a great job!

I love your videos because they are such honest, non-preachy reflections of mindfulness. I've always wanted to try on all my things, especially after moving back to Toronto. I lived abroad for 3 years and had about a suitcase and a half worth of a "capsule" wardrobe, but coming 'home' meant seeing the overwhelming closet and drawers of stuff I'd left behind. It seems like a daunting task, but my aim is to do one of these inventories before I buy anything new. Thanks for the video!

Good for you, Christina. And you're right - we should not shamming ourself, but use our awakening in a positive way. I haven't done a inventory, but I really had an eyeopening experience last time I decuttered. I've been decluttering pretty regualery over the las couple of years. The clothes I no longer wanted, I sold to my collegues and what they didb't buy, I gave to charity. But the last time I did it, I suddenly felt so ashammed. I had 6 garbagebags (I'm talking huge huge bags)! When my co-workers had gone trough them, you couldn't even see it - and they bought a lot! I told them it would be the last time in a long time I would declutter, because I would be more mindful of my purgeses. I'm ashammed to admit, that it only had been about 6-8 month since my last declutter. It was really painful to throw it all away to charity (if you know what I mean) and I get sick of the thought of the amount I'd spent. But now I'm on a low buy - very much inspired by you and Signe (Use Less), and I just made a switch over of some winter knits to spring knit because I got the urge to something new. Hopefully that will keep me from buying - because I still got plenty of clothes.

I love this video! I do think you're always really hard on yourself when you're doing such a good job at streamlining your wardrobe and your life, and I love your raw honesty. I did a similar video a few months ago to find out how many items I had and I have 77 in total (although I didn't count bags, I have x3 of those). That covers me across all 4 seasons and there's no way that I could have only 20 - 30 items like some of the minimalist vloggers do - that would be completely unrealistic for the climate I live in and I don't just want one dress for every occasion 😂 xx

First off your wardrobe is super cool! And secondly thanks for baring your soul to us in terms of wardrobe. I am realizing even as I type this there are items in my wardrobe that I don't like or that don't feel me when I wear them. The process of getting rid of these things can be hard though. I am hoping to declutter my wardrobe some more as I have had some success with selling and consigning. Also if you saw my cardigan section and my scarf section you would understand what I am into. I need to do this come spring break when I have some time.

Excellent video Christina thank you for doing this, I know it’s a ton of work. A couple of years ago my closet rod broke so I counted over 400 items at that point. I still have more than most people I think around 160 but I am doing much better. I can see how many repeats you have (Bridgette Raes calls this “splitting your wears”) & I have to beware of this myself. You are on the right path Christina, onward & upward - a phrase I like from Gretchen Rubin😊

I've been looking forward to this video! I did an inventory last week and was pretty shocked. I counted 159 pieces, with 10-15 in the laundry, including pajamas but not including undergarments. I decluttered as I counted, and should have gotten a number including the decluttered pile but forgot. It really put things into perspective. I want to start buying less. Eventually I will try everything on, but it is exhausting enough taking everything out, counting, and then putting away again! :) I think 100-120 would be a realistic goal for me.

Thank you for sharing your process. Except for logo tshirts my style is quite similar. You inspired a low buy year which has been a huge challenge. Wow you really did a great job. I actually did something similar last year and I was shocked of how many clothes I had that I didn't wear for a year!! I got rid of them and now I'm doing a declutter every couple of months and I usually sell/donate the things that I don't use because my style sometimes evolves and I don't like that piece any more. Great job!! I love your videos. I'd like to see another video with the things that you got rid of.

What you said about this is more time and effort than I ever want to spend on my wardrobe really resonated with me. Life must be so much easier with less stuff. GIRL! You’re making me cry! Because I have way more than that!!! 🤦🏾‍♀️ I can see a few things that are repeats but other than that I think you have a great selection, however you know what you wear and what’s just ‘hanging around’ and that’s the goal, as you mentioned, having all pieces you really love AND WEAR! And not being overwhelmed in their maintenance i.e. laundry, putting away (boy do I know about that!🤦🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️). At first I thought what a daunting task to count every piece! Although it took you a long time I think it was well worth it to have that awareness in your head so you can be mindful about adding and deleting! Just remember, it didn’t build up overnight so it’s not reducing overnight. I think you are doing a fantastic job working on it to eventually reach your goal, which you most certainly will! You’re awesome and beautiful, keep up the good work! (And inspiring me!)😉

I just did a spring 2020 trends video using clothes I already own and I am so happy to see how much I could still reuse to be ‘in fashion’ not that I care too much about that, but it made me be so creative and discover some lovely pieces in my wardrobe!
