I’m currently taking a college elementary German class and some (very few) words, I was able to somewhat deduced what the sentence was. Like woman, boy, child. I have a freund who’s from the Netherlands and it’s kinda fun talking to her in a language that is similar to hers. I wish there more languages available to learn where I am tho.
@oppenbot1717
@oppenbot1717 2 жыл бұрын
@@anthonyfell Wow, that sounds cool. I always appreciate it when people study new languages (especially German is often called hard). I'm just to dumb for grammer to be honest. That's why I stick with English^^ Where are you from? And which languages would you like to learn?^^
@anthonyfell
@anthonyfell 2 жыл бұрын
@@oppenbot1717 ah yeah, but any language can be hard. Especially if the language you’re learning is not one of major languages around you. I‘m from Southern California. Tbh there’s not a whole lot of languages to learn/available to learn. There’s Spanish, (mainly) Mandarin Chinese, some French, very little Italian, very little Korean (got to go somewhere like LA for that.) some Japanese (where I’m in there’s only 1 or 2 classes available.) and one German class from only two out of three colleges around me and we’re losing the better professor. Dutch isn’t available, Polish, Russian, any other language (at the community college level that is) is not available to learn. I’ve taken Spanish a long time ago I need to come back and learn again. (There’s a lot of Spanish speakers where I‘m at.) I need to continue learning ASL because my sister is Deaf. Right now, I‘m just taking Deutsch (German) and having fun with it. Spanish was very easy for me. German is a very close 2nd place to it being hard to learn. ASL was pretty damn hard due to me having to use my non dominant hand (right hand is kinda damaged.) and the fact it‘s solely visual. Non sign language based languages are rather easier to learn in general. I‘ve tried learning Japanese and maybe I‘ll take an official class, but it‘s very difficult to me. Dutch seems similar so I kinda want to pick it up as well. I want to learn German mainly that I want to experience a different country and culture from my own and hopefully live there. Also wouldn’t hurt to be the translator for when my family and I go on a family trip over there. What about you? What’s your journey with languages? Edit: since you mentioned you speak German, how do you think of English grammar or speaking/writing it?

Fun fact: Deer used to be the generic word for animal in middle English then the Latin word for animal "animus" was used for foreign and exotic animals. Deer was then shortened to mean woodland critters and then some time later it replaced the word that old English used for deer. Hart Same thing happened with apple. All fruit used to be called apples. There's a reason why modern depictions of the forbidden fruit are all apples.

duolingo is great for starting a language. its free, and has good motivations (the leaderboard and streak make adhd brain go brrr). but its notoriously known for teaching you up to second grade level in that language (if youre lucky, some just go to first). i'm learning japanese, because i heard its hard and i wanted that challenge, and its interesting to be able to listen to or watch something japanese and pick out parts of sentences. i think its wonderful to get interested in a language with it, since ive tried learning russian and korean and gave up both times and am happy i didnt spend money on those courses learning a language is all about resources, and most people prefer free ones because we all poor. so my advice, once you get done with a duolingo course, is looking into language classes for children (ie, if youre learning japanese, look for things that japanese children use in japan) and looking at childrens books. no one is born knowing a language, everyone has to learn it, so why not learn it the way you learned your native language
