An old friend in England introduced me to TS a few years ago and I've been an avid fan of the band ever since. Individually they are all brilliant solo musicians but their joint contributions to the band are unselfish and give the whole performance a cohesive quality... I'm nearly 80 and an old jazzer (in the days of the Jazz Revival - the late fifties /early sixties ) when I was a drummer - still got bits of the kit lying around! All jazz has its roots in New Orleans. And all jazz swings. But New Orleans jazz struts. And this band STRUTS!! An overlooked aspect of early New Orleans jazz is that it was played by marching bands in the street and the band marched while playing so the way the bands marched was part of the performance. And the best bands had the best style of marching. I don't really know how to describe how "strutting" comes out in the music. I think it may have something to do with most marches being in 2/4 because we have 2 legs and so the feel was left-right-left like in military style. The music may be written in 4/4 but the overall feel is 2/4. I'm not a musiccoogist and I might be totally wrong in my analysis but all I know is this band and all true New Orleans style music has that underlying feel IMHO. if you listen to this and count one two, one two you'll see what I mean. And it's also my theory that the term swing (besides its rhythmic definition) probably refers to the way a swing moves back and forth in 2 beats.

Congrats to Tuba Skinny, they are going to play at the famous Newport Jazz festival July 31,2020. Long Overdue. World Famous, and it took Newport Festival this long to recognize their importance in preserving the original traditional New Orleans jazz music, and create their own as well? We will never see the likes of Tuba Skinny again...they just just kill it with right sound and style. imagine if the world put down their guns and picked up a musical instrument instead....you would have a giant Tuba Skinny.....

This group is as great as the ones I heard from N.O. 82 years ago. They are certainly more disciplined and in terms of skilled, well, many play several instruments. On that Score Shaye outdoes them all. I just wish Erika was with them on this gig.

A great performance and a great recording! The street recordings and dba recordings usually have the vocal level so low it's hard to hear the singer.
