Turned out very, very nice, indeed! I don't tumble my agates but do use sandpaper, different grades to polish up my stones. The finest paper being the black paper used for cars and the like. I wet this paper and it sands off any unleveled spots and leaves a nice polish. My stones are soaked first in lemon juice, CLR and peroxide and cleaned with a toothbrush, dried and then put in mineral oil to soak overnight. Then I sandpaper but only if I feel they need an extra polish, rinsed and another light layer of oil. Enjoyed your video, my friend.

One of the things that might be preventing you from getting a nice smooth finish on the final polish is contamination from the previous grit. Any of those stones that have interior pockets can hide small amounts of grit through each run, and if you don't get 100% of it, it will fall out in the next stage and scratch up your finer grind. Since the 3rd stage is usually your 500 or 600 pre-polish, then a trace amount of that in your final polish will keep it from getting glass-smooth without showing obvious scratches visible to the eye. I usually take out stones any that have the potential to store grit after the 60/90 stage and either grind out the deep pockets on a wheel, or run them again through the coarse grind for the shallow pockets. An aluminum oxide final polish will give a glassier finish, but as you stated, the hardness of the rocks has to be considered. Finally, at the end, you can also give them a final run for about 4-6 hours with plastic pellets and some soap flakes (shaving a bar of ivory soap works best) to give them a good shine. Of course if the polish step doesn't produce a smooth surface, then the extra burnishing with soap flakes won't really improve it much.

Oooh those are Pretty! Tumbling is a learning experience each time I think, at least for me so far. I need to run my batch with coarse again found the medium all clumped together in the tumbler dunno what I did wrong. Do and learn.

One trick to tumbling a 1 lb rock in one of those tumblers, add a few large stones, and a bunch of way smaller stones, the large stones will act as chisels, you should also add medium sized stones too. with the tiny rocks, this will cause the rocks to roll on all the tiny rocks getting a fantastic shine that way, this tumble came out amazing, especially the largest one.

Thanks for the videos and the eyes-on info. I am currently on stage 2 of my first tumble since I was a kid in the late 70's. I've been watching a lot of videos on the hobby and am going to try a 5th and final step I saw called 'burnishing' using a bar of Ivory soap, shaved with a cheese grater. 1 cup of shavings per pound of rocks with water filled to just under the top rocks as usual. Tumble 24 hrs. rinse in warm water. His jasper came out amazing!

After aluminum oxide polish I run a fifth week in cerium oxide , stones come out looking like they were dipped in glass

Some how I missed this one. Great video as usual. In tumble mine for 2 weeks each step. I have 2 double barrel tumblers. One week I go to the #1 tumbler and the next step and the next week I go to the #2 tumbler and do the same. That way I'm not so freaking anxious about having to wait soooooo long to see results. Lol

Cerium and tin oxide work great on chalcedony, idk about tumbling but I have used both while cabbing and got the most beautiful mirror polish.

Those inclusions hold the coarser grit which comes out in the subsequent grits. I go in with a needle and pick out as much as I can and rinse well.Cool stuff

Hey man you should consider buying a cheap rotary drill like a off brand Dremel and then using a silicon carbide or rubber abrasive silicon carbide bit to take away a few layers while also shaping the stone to how you like. It's faster then using a tumbler and its nice to use if you want to see what a stone will look like polished right away. You can do about 20 rocks a hour for medium size.

For your jasper, agates, pet. wood (basically all chalcedonies), and any quartz, you can't beat Cerium Oxide for your polish. It's a bit more expensive, but on par with Tin Oxide. If done properly, you'll get a mirror finish. Be sure to just have only the above things in the tumbler.

The shine won't improve from that by polishing for longer, burnishing will help get a better shine but the pixelated rock won't be less pixelated by polish, the 600 or pre polish stage was the problem I think, it's all trial and error and eventually you will instinctively know when each process is right. Some nice finds though, that dinky one was cute.

Niiiice stuff bro! The blue is VERY pretty! And I love the little carnelian drip! Flatten one side and it would make a very nice ring setting. ~3:30, I know how 3D those pieces look when not on camera, those are very cool! 5:45 Looks like a ½melted ice cube! ~6:00 I call those "tumbler bombs", as they can go off at any time! In the grits, it's not a big deal, but in the pre-polish or polish, it will prevent a good polish. I notice your beads are pretty dark. Not sure if they're the exact same as the ones I use, but if they are, they were white to start. Suggests to me you're using them in the grit and polish. I would strongly recommend having separate beads for grit and polish, just because they're really good at holding grit I find. :) Glad you're having fun with the tumbler though! It's awesome to see an identical barrel to what I run working away on the other side of the planet! The more you use it, the more you'll refine not only your tumbling process, but your selection process as well. It takes time, but eventually you'll even become selective about what you collect in the field for your tumbler! Thanks big time for the shout out! I really appreciate it!

the green one is likely a green adventurine I paused the video and it looks like I can see some fine mica in the cracks of the stone sometimes they can be hard to see because the mica will be really small and evenly distributed into the rock but layers of mica can be identified with a loupe on that stone probably. It looks like it's in the color range of adventurine being more forest green. being in Australia you have a chance of chrysoprase but those are somewhat different color than what you found. you can just call it green jasper if no micas are present.

I actually love the look of those tumbled from the creek! Now that you have a bit of experience maybe you can help me out. Along the beaches east coast U.S. are tons of sea-tumbled agate and chalcedony so they are smooth but not polished, how would you go about finishing them off?
