GOD that bit about not even being able to write villains as villains any more is so relatable. I love writing so many messed up stories and such but unlike when I was a teen, I now feel like I have to add "I do NOT endorse the actions of my characters" to EVERYTHING I WRITE.

No one has the manual. We are all desperately trying to defuse our own personal bombs only recalling we aren't alone when we hear a muffled explosion or cheer in the distance. Sometimes the ones who cheer yell out a helpful hint before they move on to their next bomb. Usually when we hear the explosions we try to guess what they did wrong so we don't make the same mistakes. Does that work? Who knows. I like to think we get better at bomb defusal as a species as more of us survive.

@@samurexatlas7373 honestly if they had both versions of Magnifico, loving King and cruel tyrant, be two completely different characters with a relationship similar to Mufasa and Scar then the movie could have had it's overprotective and scared of conflict leader that the movie started him as and keep the power hungry monster he ends up as while having most of the story being relatively unchanged. You get the complex pseudo antagonist and the unquestionably evil actual antagonist at the same time with a better flow for the overall story and make the moral being that still hands bring pestilence and taking action is always better than no action at all. Obviously you'd need more general changes to the original movie to make this work but the overall story, I believe at least, would be way more engaging. Granted you'd also need to change more than just Magnifico to make Wish actually good but it would be a step in the right direction.

I realised I would hate being a carpenter when I visited the shop of a colleague who renovates old furniture. Beautiful old dressers, chairs, chandeliers, thousands of brass fixtures lined up on storage rooms... And an old oak chest of drawers, about 200 yo and mint condition. Cut into three and glued back into an useless 20 cm deep decoration for some rich tasteless person's wall, the drawers' fronts glued in place and unusable. Why are people like this? Why must we destroy beauty to eat? Are we nothing but servants to some god of destruction, chaos and discord? We strived to make beauty with such passion we ended up as slaves to the whims of ugliness. Yes, I know I'm being melodramatic, but my second career-path was theatre.

So I used to work as a fireplace salesman (and occasional fitter)... and having an open plan house is the WORST thing you can do if you want any kind of proper heating and ventilation throughout the house. You need those inner walls and nooks and crannies to trap in the heat, and to stop all the air being drawn through the house like a mild wind tunnel. The inner walls of your house are like trees, stopping strong winds from turning your home into an all-but-physical desert!

Darklands Legends by Randall Standridge has a guy (I believe named David) explore an enchanted castle, and he almost dies in each movement.
