My mom used to make tuna casserole as a way to make the groceries stretch. It had the added benefit of a dish her children would eat with relish 😊 I haven't had it in years. I guess I'll put both it and these tuna patties in my menu rotation.

Loved my moms' tuna casserole! Still make it - 1 or 2 cans of solid tuna, can of cream of mushroom soup, undiluted, can/frozen peas and crushed potato chips on top. In oven 350° until bubbly and voila! Hope you try it because it's so good!

Never eaten tuna casserole ☺️ My abuela used to make canned salmon patties. Albondigas de Salmon. I’ve been enjoying mackerel with olive oil and lemon, I add it to homegrown greens, canned navy beans, fresh tomato & nuts & seeds, more lemon juice and zest. 😋 Thank you for the reminder of how tuna caught! Very important! I like your addition of pickles and panko. Yummy!!! 💖💐

My mom never made tuna casserole but I suspect I would’ve liked it. She did however make tuna salad for sandwiches quite a lot but she always used pimento stuffed green olives instead of pickles which I absolutely love! I think that would be great in the casserole too

Sarah, I was raised Catholic and when I was a child my mom would make tuna noodle casserole on Fridays. It wasn't great. Just recently I have tried it again and I do like it. I suppose my palate has matured. I also like an open face tuna melt, and this tuna mixture would be delicious in that application.... with cheese, of course!

My mom wasn’t what you would call a great cook. But she figured out what all five of her kids would eat. We didn’t have money so she had about ten easy, low-budget recipes she regularly made for us. One was creamed tuna. Just tuna, flour, and milk all cooked together in her electric skillet. She served it over boiled potatoes. Yum! To this day, when I need some comfort food, I make one of her 9 dishes, except her fried pork chops. They were inedible. The others were homemade mac n cheese, fish sticks, spaghetti with homemade sauce, meatloaf, tacos, hot dogs and beans, lasagna, baked chicken, and fried pork chops (which I hated). Mom would go thru the rotation and then start over again. She always served a canned vegetable and/or a fresh green salad.

I'm a vegetarian now but used to love canned tuna - though I was never a fan of the hot, creamy tuna casserole..... I would totally do this with chickpeas! Oh, and I think the lemon zest thing requires that you hold the lemon still while using the rasp grater like a violin bow. Then you can make sure you don't grate too far before turning the lemon. Thanks for this idea!

Love tuna casserole, I make my own bechamel, as I prefer a wetter casserole then add small (very small) sharp cheddar chunks and then whatever is in vege bin...might saute mushrooms, grated carrots, frozen peas, topping is butter/breadcrumbs; for these tuna cakes I would def add some chopped scallions or minced onions-thanks u Sarah

I make my fish cakes by chilling them first after formed and then baking them on parchment paper without flipping. For me it is easier than frying. The chilling takes care of the tendency of fish cakes to fall apart. Mine have egg. I like the idea of the carrot and pickle.

Big fan of tuna casserole. It’s one of these generational things. I think anyone born after 85 or so probably didn’t grow up with a lot of tuna cause there was a time when tuna had a really bad rep from the “dolphin safe” thing and the mercury as well.

If you're using oil packed tuna make sure it's packed in olive oil. Soybean or cottonseed oil has the most pesticides of almost any food product on the market. Also use skip jack or light tuna. Albacore is filled with mercury.

I LOVE tuna casserole but I'm surrounded by haters, so it isn't often that I actually get to make one. Thank you for this recipe with alternate ingredient suggestions, but now I'm gonna be the hater....I don't like too much crunch in my tuna patties or casserole and if there is crunch it definitely needs to be chopped super fine. Thanks again for this recipe!
