1991 Miata
Stock (head never off) 1996 engine with 223k miles, burns a lot of oil
T3/T4 eBay churbo, SS Autochrome exhaust manifold - these have been on the car since 7/2007
205/55-14 555R's with a 2007 build date, could not get a good launch thus the very poor ET.

This car is inspiration to push the envelope! I recently made 254whp with my completely stock 206k 1.6L with E85 and a GT2554R. The car has had a lot of tuning since its humble beginnings since the 174whp China turbo days. I came back to this video (for the 10th+ time) to check out your 1/8 mile numbers. I'm running tomorrow and was hoping to get close to the 90mph mark, but now that I see your slip I'm not so sure, lol. I trapped 84.9mph with 236whp and the laggiest T25 on earth. I'm running flatshift now and a climbing boost setup to keep the torque more flat up top, probably somewhere in the 265-270whp range by now. Have you put this thing on a dyno yet????????

+TheCarPassionChannel Your numbers are impressive for an old stock 1.6, congrats!  My 1/8mi best speed is 93.61mph on this run: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gtFhdpdqsNLVlJs.html The car has never been on a dyno. Based on weight and 1/4mi trap speed, math & physics gives 325-330whp. I'm pretty sure there is a significant amount of safe power left on the table that I could get with some dyno time. The tune on this run is particularly terrible and it is hitting boost cut. That being said, it sometimes gets wheelspin in 4th. Time for excuses. The 6sp/4.10 combo make the gears super short. It's difficult to 60' and hit shift points. It also has 350lb springs in the rear which are terrible for launching. The best run to date is a 12.21 @ 118.11mph. Going to go back to the track someday with better tires and possibly softer springs. FYI, taking your 1/8mi ET and multiplying it by 1.55 is extremely close to what your 1/4mi ET would be. Lag? Run the biggest most open exhaust that you can and make sure the wastegate shuts completely. After that, get more aggressive with the pre max boost tune.

ttssm2 Thanks for the reply! Your car looks like it would be sooo much faster with a 3.6 or even a 3.9 would help I'm sure. I'm running 5-speed + 3.9 torsen. My GT2554R spools exponentially faster then my T28 churbo and combined with flatshift it pretty much feels like a V8 between gears. I'm hoping to go sub 8.5's tonight, I think my 3rd gear tops out right around 90mph @ 7400 so I only have to deal with 2 shifts. I normally run closed loop boost control which is what I've had the best results with as far as spoolup, light years faster then wastegate or even open loop. I have 392# rear springs and nice stiff NT01's so those work against me but it will still be a fun time. I'll tag you when I get the clips up if you want to check it out.

+TheCarPassionChannel Good luck and have fun! Post up a video and put the link here. I have no idea what your powerband is like but try lower shift points and doing the evil 3-4 gear change. Unfortunately I'm in 5th gear through the traps. This video shows my $35 launch control and flat shift in action. Between shifts it does a fuel cut and it makes things easier on the transmission than normal street driving. I could make an unlimited number of passes with no shock on the trans provided that I don't misshift. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h95gqMd2rr_DkY0.html

ttssm2 That thing sounds so good! Makes me wonder what my bottom end can really take as long as the tune is kosher. I'm playing around with an EBC setup that makes the boost creep from 13psi to 15.5psi from 5500 to 7000RPM, basically I don't want to make any more peak torque since I'm good friends with my 5-speed (231wtq @ 5200) but I want to try to keep the torque flatter in the top end since all it does is drop off. Kudos for pushing the stock-rod envelope and making the rest of us feel safer, haha.

Hey, back again to spam your video, haha. I'm finally getting ready to take my car to a 1/4 mile track! I was able to land an 8.55 @ 87.88mph 1/8 (With a horribly prepped track, 2.2 60' at best on 225 NT01's) so I'm hoping a real NHRA prepped track will help with the first gear traction. I'm really hunting for a 110-112mph trap to prove all the miataturbo skeptics wrong (I'm sure you're familiar with them, lol). With the 5-speed/3.9 combo I'll only need 4 gears to do it. With ethanol and a few more tweaks I put down 276whp on the same old 1.6 , ready for a fun time. Thanks again for the inspiration!
@ttssm2
@ttssm2 8 жыл бұрын
+TheCarPassionChannel Congrats! With a doable 2.0 60' you'll break into the 12's. The 5sp gear ratios are way more pleasant than the 6sp. Seems that your car has about the same power as mine did on 93 and a 5sp. Video:kzfaq.info/get/bejne/btqRnruEtsi3gWQ.html What is your mt handle? Skeptics?! The ones that think I'm lying, the car doesn't exist and that is just isn't possible to make more than 325whp on a really old stock motor? What skeptics? :)
@TheCarPassionChannel
@TheCarPassionChannel 8 жыл бұрын
ttssm2 Hahaha you know how MT is. It's "1993z32" and it seems all they care about is the 1/4 mile trap speed for proof of power, but I can dig that. I'm excited to run this thing and see what it can do. My 2554R seems to be running out of air, but just for fun I picked up a GT2860RS to see if this stock 1.6 can break into the 300's. I'll be back with video and results!

I know it’s an old video.. but I was wondering if it’s bone stock internals? I’m running a 1.8 with an Isr turbo kit.. Haven’t seen it’s full potential yet since one of my coils died.. so now I’m going to use the ls truck coils in batch fire
@ttssm2
@ttssm2 5 ай бұрын
Yes, bone stock internals, head never off. 230k+ miles. Only thing not bone stock is the exhinatke cam. The best run of 12.21@118mph was with stock 1.6 coils. After switching to the Yukon LS2 coils, there was a seat of the pants tq increase but haven't been to the track in ages. This is on E85, 18-19psi, overly conservative timing, massive intercooler and water injection. Good luck and have fun!

your running very rich up top at 10;1, you want to pull some fuel on your map and you will find it to be even quicker, if your getting det by reducing it to 11.5;1 then pull some timing, making it run overly rich to overcome det is not ideal as you get bore wash (may be why it uses so much oil) and can actually make det worse when the engine gets hot.

The win margin was 8.08 seconds. To be fair, he cut an even worse light than I did, had a bad 60' and probably missed a gear. He cruised at 55mph for the last half of the track. Can't put his car down, at least not based on this run!

The airbag has been removed! I cut a slit in the steering wheel cover and shoved the phone belt clip into it. I drilled a hole in the belt clip for the lens. You can see how it's positioned from the wide camera shot. Low tech, low price and quick installation.

@ttssm2 - I have a 95 and am currently in the process of dropping a GT2554r in with a log mani and MS2. I would like to run E85 but am unsure of what size injectors are necessary. I power goals are at least 225whp and hope I can at least reach these on pump gas, until I do E85. I plan on upgrading the stock pump to a LP190 with 460cc RX7 injectors I will be able to obtain my goals on about 12psi?
@ttssm2
@ttssm2 8 жыл бұрын
+Troy Sebo I suggest you size your fuel system for your ultimate E85 power goals from the beginning. The higher volume fuel pump is the same cost. Buy the big ID or other Bosch EV14 based injectors. I do not like running high base fuel pressures for a lot of reasons. Copied older reply:The relationship between fuel pressure and fuel volume is often overlooked. A 255lph @ 43psi (AND at 13.5V) drops off a LOT when you run a high base pressure and then add boost on top of it. So, size the injectors big enough to keep the pump in its operating range. While NA I ran the stock pump/injectors. On 93 it was the Walbro 255hp and 550cc RX-7 injectors. For me, they were maxed out at 290whp. When converting to E85 I put in 1100cc/min injectors, same pump. In a nutshell I'd get the HP255, 1,000cc/min+ injectors and be done with it.

+Clayton Bridges Yes, 6sp. The 5sp sheared a couple of 3rd gear teeth on a roll on. To be fair, the 5sp was fine on when power was ~286whp. The swap to E85 bumped the power up a significant amount which is when the 5sp gave up.

Carlos Galicia- So far, the only driveline failure is a 5sp transmission. A tooth sheared off of 3rd gear on a roll on. The driveline has more than 228k miles on it. Obviously I don't drive easy but I rarely abuse it - mechanical empathy. "Wear quickly"? The only thing I've noticed is the rear tires, nothing else.

Hey if you have like 8-10 PSI do you need to upgrade injectors. or the fuel pressure
@ttssm2
@ttssm2 9 жыл бұрын
Ubaidullah Mohammad There are a lot of variables involved. I personally would upgrade both. Imo, the fuel system needs to have extra capacity for safety and isn't a place to take chances. A Walbro pump is cheap, injectors can also be inexpensive. After that it comes down to a properly tuned ecu. You need fuel to make power!

This car has never been on a dyno but using calculators based on trap speed and weight, it's around 326whp.

Greg Peters On this run the weight is 2493lbs and the trap speed is 117.8mph. My calculator shows 318whp. The last time at the track it was 2568lbs at 118.11mph which gives 330whp. What calculator and actual weight running down the track did you use? Either way, the trap speed matches other cars that have been on the dyno. It's a STOCK 1996 1.8 with 228k miles except for the exhintake cam. I'm willing to do a pass down the track then a teardown if someone wants to put up protest cash. :)
