Sir, the armor is among the best i've ever seen. The paintjob is absolutely fabulous. Well done! Constructive criticism: the fact that the jumpsuit and finger tips are in the wrong colour kinda ruins it, but i completely understand that it takes time to complete a 100% accurate costume. Is it still good ?

I just finished my paint job! Overall I am happy with it, I did some further testing on some scrap pieces and was worried that the graphite was washing off when applying the floor sealer (similar to pledge), I thought my dark grey gloss spray paint was perhaps too dry and not tacky enough to have the graphite powder stick, so I applied the graphite at about 30mins. Unfortunately I think the same thing happened with my final armor, it looked so good after first applying the graphite and buffing, and now it’s back to dark grey after applying the floor gloss :( I used foam brushes for the floor gloss and went with as little pressure as possible applying it. Maybe the air brush is crucial for the pledge/floor gloss step?
@TristanMaker
@TristanMaker Жыл бұрын
I haven't tried applying the floor gloss with a brush, but I've seen other people do it and getting good results. I'm not sure why it didn't work in your case, but if using an airbrush can fix the issue for you, try it out :)

Thank you Tristan for these amazing videos and tutorial! I bought the templates and have been working hard, I did a paint test on one of the shoulder pieces and ran into the same texture-issue that you did. Parts of it look great, and others have a texture/stippled appearance. I used all the same products you show in the line-up..any ideas what went wrong? Maybe the filler primer and dark grey gloss paint reacted with each other? I waited 4 hours for the filler primer to dry before sanding it and applying the dark grey gloss, maybe I will try waiting overnight for the filler primer.
@TristanMaker
@TristanMaker Жыл бұрын
I think it may just be that you need to let the filler primer cure completely (at least 48 hours) before applying the spray paint. Try that out

I have the black edition of the Mando helmet and I can't actually wear it with the armour I've made from your etsy shop. BTW your templates are absolutely awesome! The armour is a very darker shade of silver. I'm going to have to make the helmet and use the one I bought only as a display piece now😮‍💨 is there any way to make the armor more 'beskar' silver? I've been using the same gloss grey as you. Would graphite powder still work with a lighter grey spray paint? I've just bought Alclad ll chromium for my airbrush. I'll let you know how it goes. Sorry for the rant. I think it may be valuable to some of your followers here in regards to colouring beskar. Thanks in advance and keep up the great work!!
@TristanMaker
@TristanMaker 2 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks! Unfortunately matching the paint of the armor to the already painted helmet will be really hard. Normally, people just paint their black series helmet the same color as their armor. In your case I think alclad silver or chrome is your best bet. But I'm not totally sure.

I made a different comment on this video before - so I don’t want to bother you - but for the revised steps of painting the armor does the Plasti dip go straight on the foam? Or does it still need a layer of Mod Podge first. I did a few test runs on foam, and I’m having trouble with the plasti dip bubbling and giving a rough texture.
@TristanMaker
@TristanMaker 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah the plastidip goes on first, no modpodge. I'm guessing they are reacting with each other
@shadowlan14
@shadowlan14 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Tristan great vid! I'm following you to make my own Mando armor. I'm having some issues with painting though, I'm doing 2 coats of plastidip, followed by 2 coats of Rustoleum dark gray, and then buffing with graphite powder and pledge floor gloss, but it's looking a bit too dark and unreflective still and there is a bit of texture left. Think you could give me a hand on what I'm doing wrong?
@TristanMaker
@TristanMaker 2 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure the texture comes from the plastidip. To get rid of it you could add 2 coats of filler primer after the plastidip and sand it smooth to 320 grit. For the color, make sure you apply the graphite while the gloss grey paint is still tacky so it really sticks. And buff it as much as you can, the longer you do it, the better it should look. For the floor gloss, apply one light coat and let it dry, then apply a really thick coat. That second coat will be glossy when dry.
@catcan221
@catcan221 2 жыл бұрын
@@TristanMaker I did exactly all of that but somehow the second coat of wax made it look dull. :-( It actually looked glossy and shiny before I put on the wax coats and let them dry. Almost wishing I had left it alone and not put on wax.
@tyclonex8071
@tyclonex8071 2 жыл бұрын
Something weird I tried yesterday that worked! After my second coat of rustoleum, I immediately smeared it using my fingers over the areas I just sprayed. I got very smooth surfaces! But still the same as you, getting a darker chrome finish instead of beskar steel.

Hey man i was following your steps and one thing that happened to me that i was hoping you could give some insight for is that for some reason when i applied the filler primer and the gloss spray paint the contact cement that wasn't covered by foam was reactivated and became super sticky. So when i buffed in the graphite powder it would stick to the glue and not be shiny but rather matted. It ended up looking like dirt which wasn't too bad but how did it not happen to you? Hope you can help.
@TristanMaker
@TristanMaker 2 жыл бұрын
Wow, I have never heard of that issue before... It could be many different things : Maybe the contact cement wasn't totally cured, maybe it reacted with the type of filler you were using, etc.. How did you seal the foam before applying the primer? Was it plastidip? If so, maybe you didn't give it enough time to cure. Plastidip takes a while to cure completely even if it feels dry.

Using a test piece(saving armor for when decided on paint), using the method in this video and I’m still getting cracks and wrinkles on the foam. Is it possible your 1st attempt and repair made a layer that helped prevent wrinkles and cracking on your 2nd attempt?
@TristanMaker
@TristanMaker 3 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure that's not it since the helmet was painted properly on the first attempt using the same technique and I didn't have any issues with it. I would recommend doing some more testing until you find the process that works for you. You could also seal your foam using other products (flexbond and epoxy work well). If you want, you can try the canvas primer I used, since it worked for me. :)

I remember people who used to use Pledge floor gloss to shine their boots when I was in the Army. It was a bad idea for that, and I think it's a bad idea for this. If it gets warm, scuffed, or bent, that floor gloss looks awful and is a huge pain to get rid of.
@TristanMaker
@TristanMaker 3 жыл бұрын
Floor gloss might not be good for shining boots, but I have used it for many foam projects and it is surprisingly durable. If you apply it thick, it gives a super glossy finish, and even if it gets scuffed, it's not very noticable. Lots of prop makers use it for those reasons. :)
@MetalVII

What is/was a good way around making boots looking shiny is either to get a thick layer of polish on your boots then melt it on using a lighter or spraying black gloss car paint works too.

Do you think its possible to apply masking tape and spray paint on top of the graphite powder? Maybe with a clear coat in between? I really want to use this technique and add some more designs on top of the chrome but can imagine the powder might come off or that the spray paint will react badly with the powder.
@TristanMaker
@TristanMaker 10 ай бұрын
If you use Spray max 2k clear over the graphite powder and let it cure for 48 hours, you can apply masking tape over it. I would recommend lightly sanding the surface you want to paint after applying the masking tape to make sure it doesn't flake off.

I buy most of my supplies at local hardware stores in Canada so I unfortunately don't have links for the products. If you live in Europe, the products available to you will be different. I this case, any gloss grey paint will work.

How did you make the bandolier and can you make a video on it?
@TristanMaker
@TristanMaker 3 жыл бұрын
The bandolier is all eva foam, reinforced on the back with nylon webbing. It was made using the same techniques as the leather leg wrap. Unfortunately I won't make a video on it since I already have a tight schedule for other projects, but I'm sure you would be able to make one since it's not too complicated. :)

Can you polish the floor gloss after it's dry for a shinier finish?
@TristanMaker

I'm pretty sure you can but I have not tested it yet. But the floor gloss is already very shiny as is.

Would the pledge that comes in a spray can seal the graphite the same as the bottle kind?
@TristanMaker

I have never used it so I can't say, but I don't see why it would work if it's the same product.

How do you harden the EVA Foam once you put the pieces together. I'm thinking about making a Boba Fett Armor
@TristanMaker
@TristanMaker 2 жыл бұрын
I don't really harden the foam, I just seal it. If you want it to be harder and more durable, you can seal it with 2 coats of epoxy resin.

If I can't find Pedge Floor Gloss then could I use any other brand of floor gloss? Like Koblenz High Gloss floor finish?

Hey. How did you get your armor to stick to the jump suit? I'm almost done with mine and I don't know how I would attach it.
@TristanMaker
@TristanMaker 3 жыл бұрын
For most of the parts, I used big sew on snaps. I also used high strength velcro on some parts like the cape and ab plate. :)

Sorry, if this has already been asked…can I skip the filler primer and spray on the gloss grey over the plasti dip? And since the Pledge is so crazy expensive, do u have any other ideas to clear coat it?

What are some alternates we could use for the pledge to seal the paint at the end. I cannot find any pledge floor gloss, I need a different sealant.

You can use Spray max 2k clear glamour

HI! I followed your priming and paiting instructions, using the Rustoleum glossy dark grey before the graphite powder, but even after the floor gloss on my test pieces it looks pretty dark, dull and one is even finely cracked in the finish. I feel like that spray max might be a necesarry component. Do you have any other suggestions, or should I give the spray max a go?
@TristanMaker
@TristanMaker Жыл бұрын
It's hard to say what causes the issue as sometimes people follow the steps from the video and don't have any problems. The spray max clear is for sure the safe way to go, but it's pretty expensive. If you are willing to pay for it, that's what I recommend of course.

Weird, maybe it has to do with temp and humidity when drying. Thanks for your help! Your work looks dope

question, on the final steps you skipped the spray max on the list, so are you not using that on the final piece or did you accidentally not list it?
@TristanMaker
@TristanMaker 3 жыл бұрын
On my armor, I used grey acrylic paint for the base color, and spray max for the gloss finish. What I would recommend is using the rust oleum gloss dark grey instead. So no, you don't need it. :)
