I loved Judy growing up and wanted to emulate her voice and mannerisms terribly. But as I got older and heard Liza sing it made me think how beautiful that she carried her own talent yet it’s obvious she has her mother and father’s creativity flowing through her.

Vulnerability but like an ignorant vulnerability, it’s very subtle. Not like the “vulnerability” of modern movie musicals that’s just so sanitized and self-aware constantly, (like, say, just blurting out what you’re feeling and why you’re feeling it and then adding the appropriate emotions alongside it) it’s much smarter than that. Liza Minnelli is an incredible actress because it’s like she’s showing us a secret that sally Bowles doesn’t know. And it’s just gut-wrenching to see her go from this to cabaret, it’s like the worst turn her character could have taken. I was just revisiting bojack horseman and remembered the elements that align with cabaret that the show makes direct reference to (don’t stop dancing +reprise) and cabaret is like the bojack horseman for a modern audience to relate to.

it's a telling scene: here's Liza singing arguably the best song in the show, and singing it better than anyone could, and the audience offers a few polite claps. This is great singing, a great performance, but that's not what 1931 Berlin wants to see. They love the gorilla suit. They love Mein Herr. These decadent people want to get their jollies. And Bob Fosse makes the point here very subtly and very effectively. He doesn't have to show us how bad things were; we can infer it. There's only one reason, I believe, why Cabaret didn't win best picture, and that's because The Godfather came out the same year.

the energy building up throughout this song... this song is my home. every time I feel lost in life, I come back to this one and I remember exactly who I am and what I live for. always a "maybe this time" person. always failing a lot, feeling like a miserable loser for a few days and then being ready to do it all over with the most open heart to life and with a fresh, endless, childish hope. always thinking I found my place in life, realizing I was wrong and picking myself up to try somewhere else without any regrets.

This song wasn't actually originally in the show. Kander and Ebb's muse (Liza Minelli) thought this song they had written for another show, but didn't use, would fit in with Cabaret so they put it in the movie for her. It has since been added to most stage productions. It's odd to think of this song NOT being in the show, despite being one of the most memorable numbers

I've always been a fan of the film and earlier this year (before Covid) I went to see the stage version. Loved it, although nothing can beat the film version. This song actually stole the show, Kara Lilly Hayworth played Sally Bowles and this song was her shining moment, she really gave it her all.

"Sally" in the original stage production just was not presented as being this vulnerable and even kind of sweet. Played by Jill Haworth then, she was also a bit rough and even gravelly-voiced, a second-rate singer in a third-rate revue. It's actually "Cliff" (original name of the BF) as played and sung by Bert Convy, who had the main love songs and inner conflicts over the ever-changing attitudes of Sally and their relationship. The entire show was re-imagined for the movie with more balance of their PoVs, and I don't think it was even LEGAL to have Liza Minelli portray a really cynical character-- has she ever? These nuances filtered back into the stage version.

I am (questionably) gen z and the first time I ever heard this song was in Glee when I was a young teen, over a decade ago. I still occasionally loved to listen to Lea Michelle and Kristin Chenoweth's duo cover that was featured on the show. But now that I have heard the original, it is so much better. I will definitely have to watch Cabaret now, and I am sad that I haven't done so sooner. For all the hate that the show got though, I would have never even known about Liza Minelli and this musical in the first place, if it weren't for Glee. So I think it definitely played a role in giving some glimpses into musical theater that people my age would not have received mostly otherwise.

This scene remains me to Chicago movie, when Renee Zellweger in the black glitter long night gown singing in the dark, simillar cinematography, similar lightinh style... But Liza gave more emotional performance...!!!

Except Renee Zellweger couldn't sing for sh*t!! I get so upset when they cast non singing mediocre actors in musicals. It makes my blood boil!! Like WHY?? Emma Stone sucks too! We need REAL voices back!!! What happened to the GREATS?!! LOL my rage is not directed towards you... I get very upset about this stuff because I am a singer and it's just ridiculous. People want to hear a voice that will MOVE them to FEEL. Very few people have that kind of voice...I do and I don't say that to sound conceited. I was born with a gift from God and I knew at 2 years old I was supposed to be on Broadway before I even know what Broadway was.....I spent my childhood singing on big stages around Los Angeles but I gave up on my dreams for a stable job and I am now 41 and thinking about trying again... it's never too late for Broadway ;) My name is Erica Horne ....maybe one day you'll hear my name and remember this comment. Gotta put it out there right? ;)

I'm watching Arrested Development for the ?th time. Loucille 2 has such a unique and beatiful face. I was curious to find out what she looked like when she was younger. I had heard the name Liza Minnelli, but didn't know who she was. This video came up in my google search. WOW!!! This performance is so good! And she was about as beautiful as I could imagine.

I saw this movie in the theatre when it first came out. A friend said he was going and asked if I wanted to come along. Sure, I said, not knowing what an experience I was in for. The movie pulled me right in from the beginning. I got a good look at how talent and ability can be handed down to the next generation. I couldn’t keep my eyes off Liza. I remembered that distinctly all this time later. This is a movie that must be seen, and I was fortunate to see it when it first came out in my adolescent years. Liza had the same ability as her mother had to pull you in close and not let go. Only the best can do that.

Liza lived song, dance, acting from such a young age .. It literally grew up in her. When you watch her & mom perform in the London Paladium in 1964 .. you see this energy. Simply amazing. KZfaq it. What an instrument of talent she gifted to us all ! Thanks mom Judy for you the first generation of this talent. Your life's beginning wasn't as graced as Liza's .. forced to perform with your sisters, afraid of your mom and being "worked" in Vaudville, having to attend school on set, working such long hours but you done good... real good. Thank you Judy. Thank you Liza. ❤️
