Intergenerational trauma can be transmitted through our community, our upbringing, and our very DNA. In this video, I'm talking about the research around intergenerational trauma, my personal discoveries around it, and a reframing of the way I look at my family, searching for strength and resilience amongst my ancestors.
I used several sources in researching this video.
Here's the entirety of Philip Larkin's brilliant poem, "This Be the Verse." www.poetryfoundation.org/poem...
"How does trauma spill from one generation to the next?" by Rachel Zimmerman in The Washington Post (www.washingtonpost.com/wellne...) is a great primer on the transmission vectors of trauma between generations.
"War’s enduring legacy: How does trauma haunt future generations?" by Tori DeAngelis for the American Psychological Association covers historical and community trauma in a depth I did not in this video. Highly recommended reading.
Here's the Fairfax County publication on Mount Air Plantation: www.fairfaxcounty.gov/plannin.... The orignal owner, Dennis McCarty, and his wife Sarah Ball were my 8th great-grandparents.
